After watching all the other competitors at the actual stores for the past few years, they sure pick the ones that suck the hardest for the winners. There were WAY better contestants that this shit....
i find it kinda sad this guy made it to the finals. he's just not very exciting, and too stiff. the other guys for this year had quite a bit more substance, and feel. just my opinion.
ya know, if this guy had done just a little bit of ripping outside of the rhythm section, he would have won. His control is pretty good, and he holds back his guitar pretty well. He just never came to the front of the band "like a king"
What i don't like is.......he's never bold.....all the licks sound regurgitated. Really talented good player.......just needs to let go and just play and not live in the blues scale and albert king box. I wanna here like a Joe bonamassa type at least as fearless of the blues gods......Just play and unleash the fury without wanking.....or being boring......that's the real problem with these competitions. Their horrible orginal talent scouts.
i came here to hate, 'cause the king of blues winners are usually trash (in comparison to the history of blues) but this dude was alright. only thing i got against him and most contemporaries is that the cat never leaves the rhythm section and just freaks it. you gotta get interwoven with it. if the beat is ging 1-2, 1-2, you can't just being flowing the same all the time. you go 1-2-3 then catch up with some otherworldy lick. All the greats played licks that were vocal smooth
Nice job man! My name is Stëv Skye and I made the first round preliminaries at the Phoenix, AZ store :) I actually posted the performance (my first youtube post)... Im surfing youtube and studying what the best KOTB players have done in previous years ;) Thanks!
@peskypesky nobody played like SRV. not in such an aggressive and soulful way. obviously a lot of SRVs licks were from hendrix and albert king and bb king. but that could be said about every blues player, from clapton to bramhall
why is everyone talking about SRV "clones" on here... Personally, I don't think this guy sounds anything like SRV besides a bit of the tone... other than that, his licks are much less diverse than SRV's.
Everybody has to pick up bits and peices from other artists or how else would you learn! I agree that you should not play someone elses music note for note but as far as learning goes everybody copies someone else there is no other way to learn! Go watch a keith richards interview he explains it very well!
I don't understand why people complain about players sounding like other good players. Variety is overrated. If lick is good one day it will be good the next. Besides, would you rather have a legion of guitar players emulating some really mediocre guitar? SRV is a good player. I have no problem with SRV clones.
I think it would be wonderful if all players played had had nice strats. Would this video be better if he was playing a first act with the distortion on a crate practice amp? Also, hats have nothing to do with good guitar playing.
I understood the allusion. I just chose not to acknowledge it because it was stupid. By comparing the increasing number of "SRV clones" to the rise of communism you are suggesting that the musicians and their listeners are forced to play this way. Nobody is forcing this. People play this way because it sounds good and other people like to listen to it. Why do you think this video has 15,000 views?
Also, if you fear some sort of conformist guitar dystopia, what is your problem with a player like Zach Weisinger? He may not be the greatest guitar player, but he is much more unique and "original" than any of the other players in this contest.
i have to be honest i have never seen an SRV 'clone'. there will never be one. he was too good. nobody could play like stevie. FACT. however there are players that try and i say let them. like the saying imitation is the finest form of flattery. Stevie would be the first one to tell you u dnt know wt your talking about. he wanted people to carry his music on to future generations on. like i sed i dnt think there will ever be a day where somebody can call them self an SRV "clone"
every town in america has at least one SRV clone playing in a bar doing all the same 40 songs... Fact
the guy in the video anbove is a SRV clone. Fact.
Guitar zach as he calls him self used to have his dad go up to musicians in Pittsburgh and threaten violence on the band leader if they wouldn't let his son sit in. Once on stage Zach couldn't even count a beat and got lost playing anything with structure, he's a joke in da burgh because of this. FACT
well if that what guitar zach did then fine. but im saying i havnt seen anyone who is an srv clone, he is too good. you send me a 15 year old playing like stevie did then fine, i dnt think you can. i am against people goin over the top buy copying the way he dressed and stuff, but other than that its fine, let people play his music, they will never play it like stevie but they can at leats try.
well in my opinion john mayer is as close as you could come to an SRV clone. believe me, stevie has always been one of my top 3 guitarists but everytime i hear john mayer take a solo all i hear is stevie, he rips him off so much its insane
no dude! he rips off hendrix and BB wayyyyyyy more than SRV. and you cant shit on some1 for borrowing SRV "rips" off albert king and hendrix alllll the time.
Funny thing is that I don't think this guy AND John Mayer sound like SRV. They may use some of his licks but then again, who the hell doesn't these days?
well i dont think he sounds like SRV but john mayer is a total SRV rip off. i know every cops his licks but mayer phrases everything and plays everything with the same tone and the whole strumming through every note and just muting the other strings rather than pick the strings individually
dud...........he is right handed you dumb peice of shit if you knew anything about guitar you would know that, know go play your little 50$ squire strat.
Rob goes to my church and he plays on our worship team sometimes. He's usually so shy in person and on stage at this thing he was a little more all out. I didnt know he was THIS good on guitar.
No originality whatsoever. Listening to him was like listening to a blues guitar cd for beginners. Not hatin' but just curious why this guy got so far and my buddy Sonny who is a young blues virtuous never made it...thats all
This guy is really great. Really groovin!

jesus how many SRV clones does this world realy need?
this 2009 not 1989...
more like king of the copycats.
I doubt this guy even knows the words to one blind lemon jefferson or leadbelly song much less any of their guitar parts.
xerox is not art.... just an impression of an original, but with all the beauty removed.
of corse it could be worse, this video could include zach weisinger. whom has brought "sucking" to new boundries.
dude, where's my originality?

imagine what fun it would be if every guitar player was an SRV clone.
if every band played "Tightrope"
if every guitarist wore the hat and boots.
using a tube screamer and a strat...
something about this reminds me of Josef Stallin's vision of utopia.

I think you're missing the point of what I'm saying. I realise that sarcasm isn't taught in school, so I'll break it down to 3rd grade level for you.
this guy don't have one lick that hasn't been taken from the pages of SRV.
does the world really need another SRV clone. Borrowing is one thing, this is pure xerox.
ps, wiki Josef Stallin to learn more about my comment.
