@RichardElden the free state isn't backrupt, it's not even in debt. IT does however have a corrupt government that have spent wrongly and irresponsibly and have now a problem covering the cost that they have encrued. With proper management and leadership. that problem can be resolved internally.
The Germans are running scared because of Greece, Spain and Portugal don't seem to be able to cover their interest payments. and if those countries fail then everyone in Europe will feel it.

My family do come from the south of Ireland and I have respect for the Irish but the troubles from late 60s started up again when The British army went in to stop the catholics getting attacked from the loyalists! When we pulled out of India there was a bloody civil war and the formation of Pakistan, now we've got two hostile and unstable states, both with nuclear weapons. When we pulled out of the south of Ireland there was a civil war. When we eventually pull out of the north there will probably be a resumption of the civil war there.

@Upeter2 Unfortunately the bombings did do a lot. It put unbelievable pressure on the British government and Irish government to resolve the conflict. If the bombings didn't happened on mainland Britain, I doubt they would have sat at the negotiating table with an organisation they considered 'terrorists'.
