Actualy the armed forces call these anti armor weapons. They do real good against light armor but tanks can give them hissy fits (if you do not hit it in just the right spot it just bounces right off).

It's called a .55 Boys Rifle. Used by Commonwealth forces during WWII to knock out tanks. IT was pretty much the last of its kind until a couple Americans sat down and decided "we need a weapon that can penetrate armor at 1000 yards. Or, you know, kill stuff" Hence the first prototypes of modern anti-material rifles was born.

Back in WW1, the Germans and the Soviets used 13.2 x 92mm rounds as anti-tank calibers. Back then tanks had weaker and thinner armor that can only withstand small arms fire. So, the Germans and the Soviets began to develop a sniper rifle that can penetrate that armor.. And therefore they came out with the anti-meterial rifle "Tank Abwehr Gewehr M1918" Later on they develop our modern .50 cal round

@tytzer93 Mauser built the 13mm Tank Gewehr during WW 1, tho it didnt enter service till 1918. In 1932 the Russians did test a 37mm recoiless gun on the Kurchevskiy system. It wasnt very good so after lots of other not so goods, they were going to issue a copy of the Tank Gewehr W/magazine in The available 12.7mm DK cartridge. This also failed to impress,(poor penetration) so in 1939 the 14.5x114 cartridge came along, and with it the PTRS, and D rifles to fire it. They saw that it was good.

Whilst the video is so poor that it's hard to make out the age of the weapon, I'll assume it's quite old. Assuming it's old, WWII through to Vietnam era, tanks of yesteryear didn't have the armor today's tanks do. One or two well-placed shots could stop a tank in its tracks back then.

Even these days, assuming you are not on the inside of depleted uranium or chobram, an anti-tank rifle is not something you want aimed at your vehicle.

They were used in packs to maximize damage since they used A.P. ammo, nothing explosive. Fire was to be directed at weak points, and areas containing vital machinery, ammunition, or crew. The idea being to get through the thin armor of those days to damage what, or whoever was behind it.

Armor was much lighter in the 20's,30's and early 40's and these rifle would shot through the 3/4 to 1 1/4 armor found on the tank of the day. They also served as anti-aircraft guns, especially in the twin Quad fifty mounts. Times change, you have to understand these guns were here long before you and they will remain after we are gone. A good gun, properly maintained, is forever.

It isnt the most powerful AT rifle, but it did okay at the time. Once tanks grew too heavy for them to deal with, they were turned to the A.M role as there was no good reason to scrap such an expensive weapon.
