  • @maxproud thanks for your help!

  • Thanks for the review man. I'd love more details on your electronics upgrades. I just picked up the passive OLP MM3 5-string to play around with - it was dirt cheap.

  • @rmann72 There's alot of preamps on EBAY you can find. The are many inexpensive, overseas models from Asia . The humbucking pickup on the MM3 is close to the original tone on the ERNIE BALL Stingray. My favorite pickups to buy are SEYMOUR DUNCAN. They bring out a clarity in the sound . DUNCAN also has preamps that are excellent, but much more expensive! You may find them worth the money, though. Check out me YOUTUBE friend, '11coopbass.' He gives 'how to' insight on this subject.

  • hi randy jackson!

  • @biryanihimself "Yeaaaaah, dawg!!" Right! Why do I get these RANDY JACKSON comments?!

  • I'm actually guitar player and I wanna start playing some bass. Do you advise me buying this guitar? I don't know if I need an extra 5th string yet, I just wanna play some jazz and funk.

  • @alkleiza1995 Check out my video on the IBANEZ Gsr200 & Gsr205. I usually point to these as great "starter" basses.

  • @maxproud thanks man :) really appreciate people actually helping me out no youtube.

  • @alkleiza1995 You're welcome.

  • OLP was shut down by MM on purpose. They introduced the Sterling Line which is somewhat cheaper than the "original" MM, however still cost a lot more than OLP used to. Really bad for the budget segment of the market IMO. The sound is fair, but with a minimal investment these basses can actually sound 99% as their original counterparts. OLP used a dual single coil instead of an actual humbucker, so a good humbucker (plus a better preamp) will pump some real MM blood into these nice instruments.

  • @Krenorg Thank you. I appreciate the info!

  • @maxproud I thank you for the review mate!

  • @Krenorg Any pickups you would recommend for this bass? Picked it up for $300AUD at a pawn shop, really really happy with it but I think it COULD sound better with some new electronics.

  • @MichaelGrah Hey there! I'd go for SD. Three versions available, so you may pick the one fitting your playin/music style most. However these are optimised with the SD 2/3 band EQs, hence their full potential will pop up when used with those, but the pup alone's still a good upgrade. If you're on a lower budget the EMG entry level passive MM syle soapbar will also add some character. Grats for the instrument, you are lucky!

  • I have an OLP 5 and I've played many gigs with it. With a new set of Super Slinky 5's man, I'm killing it. ike anything else you get a good one or a bad one. I was fortunate to get a good one and I'm keeping mine also. And no, I didin't buy it because I wanted a real Music Man, I bought it because it has a punchy fingerstyle sound at an affordable price, But like I said, with a new set of strings, slap city baby!!!!

  • @phillybass101 Cool!! The OLP's have been good basses. 'Haven't heard a complaint on one yet!

  • I have an OLP mm 4 string that I've toured with, with zero modifications. To be honest, I would'nt trade it for the world. It's 7 years old now and still

looks and feels the same as when I got it.

  • @reticjim Wow, no mods! Cool. It's 'gotta be broken in well! Kinda feel sorry for that rabbit, though!

  • @reticjim well after hearing this and no bad reviews might pick one up

  • @fallnreverse16 Cool.

  • Love the tone and especially that pickguard on the black body. Very Nice. I've been collecting these MM3 OLP's for a couple years, pulling the frets and doing a Jaco style fingerboard. Unbelievable tone and feel. I pulled all the preamps and ran straight to volume/output jack. Using an alnico wound pickup, tone sorta depends on how you atack the strings-but it does everything. Very Fender sound/feel. For a couple hundred bucks and a little work, its the sweetest thing I've ever played.

  • Great review dude, great tone! keep on the good work

  • @gordeteh Thanks! 'Appreciate it.

  • I have the same bass in natural finish. love it

  • @iamrichlol It's every bit of a MusicMan Stingray! Just a little on the quality. But it sounds like the "genuine article," when you add a preamp!

  • What preamp did you drop in this bass?

  • @raderfan09 Pulled it out of a IBANEZ Gsr200. I had two of these basses, so I sacrificed one of them.

  • Where can I find this bass? Where did you bought it. Please let me know

  • @davidlimtw OLP stopped making basses, so you must buy one in old stock, or 2nd handed..

  • just bought one...for the price it is simply amazing , obviously its not as good as the musicman, but i do not feel that it is far off

  • @bepsterdegi If you can get it, a nice preamp would be great for it!

  • @maxproud thanks man, ill see if i can get one

  • i found an olp music man 4 string in great shape for 175 on craigslist.... how much did these basses cost new? And does someone want to buy it from me if i get it?

  • @seantyler23 I not really sure. Let's say between $250.00 to $400.00. I had bought only one of these basses at the time. It was a TONY LEVIN 'signature' model. It had a 2-band preamp in it. OLP's started off as passive copies of the standard MusicMan basses. Someone may want to by it (your OLP) if you give a good price. Now that you've got the bass, are you going to 'Mod' it?

  • i have 2 basses a 4 string schecter stilletto and a 5 string olp mm3, i got it off of craigslist months ago, it's passive but the kicker is that it came with a real musicman headstock/neck that matches the body :D

  • @ampmjuku Cool. What luck!

  • Hey Max,

I'm probably going to put in a pre-amp as well. Not sure which one though... aguilar maybe?

Oh is the neck of that bass any good?

    Thank you :)

    Take care,

    Kevin

  • @KEVXEDGE 'Neck is fine. I just may not be as shiny-lacquered, though.

  • Hey Max, cool review.

I own a musicman stingray now, a black one. And I love it. BUT I'm going to buy an OLP MM2 as a back up :). I'm going to throw in a new pick up and hopefully an original musicman bridge...

  • @KEVXEDGE Hi. Are you 'gonna put a preamp in that MM2, or does it come with one?

  • I wish I could tell you, definitely!! But they've become pretty popular since the company discontinued making them. You might find them "used" on the internet like craigslist, ebay, some odd music site, or maybe some has one here on Youtube. In fact, if you find some somewhere, let me know! I'd love it! Thanks for checking out my channel!

  • where can i get an olp bass?

  • @BassManBailey5 The "Phat II" is the name of the preamp. It was taken out of a IBANEZ GSR-200 4string bass. Along with that humbucking pickup it has. The sound is pretty close the MusicMan Sound. Since you own one, you know this could be a very inexpensive upgrade. Thanks for checking out my channel.

  • @maxproud Where can I buy one?

  • @BassManBailey5 I'm afraid they don't sell the preamp separately. I literately had the GSR 200, I owned, "gutted' and had the Phat-II installed into the OLP bass. If you're not electrically knowledgeble, it's best to hire a luthier to do it. Or someone who works on guitars.

  • Nice.. I own the same bass! Just wondering what kind of preamp did you use in this?

  • Comment removed

  • @TheLOUDMUSIC Let me know how that works out for you! Thanks for watching.

  • aw! Thanks anyway man! i hope i can see some video cover with your OLP MM3! hehehehe=)

  • hey! nice video max.. i just want to know how did you put the PHAT 2 on your bass.. THANKS in advance!

  • @JoHnRiDgE06 Thanks. I had a guy at a music store put it in. He's a very good luthier and electronics man! I'm not electrically inclined. I wouldn't dare try it myself.

  • @SteAlthXeR0 Firstly, welcome and thanks for watching my channel! This OLP came as-is except for The pickguard and preamp. I had to have the pickguard made at my favorite music shop. Finding a "fitted" MusicMan pickguard is sort of difficult. As for the preamp? I snatch one out of a used Ibanez GSR200 bass called th "PHAT 2." It's very hard to find those old OLP models. Bassists out there are snatching them up fast! You can bulid you a nice "Stingray" copy for cheap!!

  • I got a slive limited edition OLP bass that was made in the USA. I put a Musicman Preamp in it and it sounds just like a musicman. The basswood gives it a great punch in my opinion. I got it with a vintage musicman maple neck for about 175 dollars, best deal I've ever got. I would totally recommend this bass if you want to get a musicman tone for a cheaper price.

  • @Garnsay Beautiful. Shows what you can do with time and effort. This is also the reason those old "OLP's" are getting snatched-up! It's cheaper and simpler to go that route, in getting a cool bass with great tone!

  • I own the 4 & 5 string models. I upgraded the pickups and made vintage Stingray 2-band preamps for them. The stock pickups on those OLP's aren't very good. I dissected one and they are typical chinese pickups, wound very sloppily. I would say my OLP basses sound as good as real Stingrays. In a blind test you couldn't tell the difference

  • @PhuckHue2 Shows what you can do for "little" money. And a little ingenuity!

  • I've got one. Not to advertise, but my videos pretty much show how my bass sounds. I got mine for 175 I think. It's cute as hell

  • OLP stopped production because musicman came out with the "sterling by musicman" line of basses. they're the much higher end compared to the OLP's and they make much more money. its way cheaper to get a OLP and mod it to have the sound and looks of the musicman for well under 600$, and the more people that figured that out the less musicman made off their official musicman basses.

  • @sasukeuchihalb Agreed. That was too much profit MusicMan wasn't getting. Seems to me they're making more sales with the STERLING's. Most don't wanna plop down that kind of money for a top of the line edition! Some just can't afford it. STERLING is for the 'regular' guy, like me. Thanks, good to hear from you.

  • @maxproud and from what ive seen and heard sterlings are practically just as good as the REAL musicman. they have sweet colors and great sounding pickups. im a huge musicman fan and its my dream to have one, but the cheapest i can get one used is 800$ at the minimal. and i dont think im quite ready to lay down that much for a bass :-/

  • @sasukeuchihalb I hear you, bro.

  • have a black one with matching headstock, read not too much that style made,in the 5string version,....it is real heavy,.very heavy,.i have seen many 4strings, but not 5,s...bout mine with slight blemish for$149,at mf. what kinda pups. you installed in yours? and the stache works for you brother,.keep it,it makes u look younger,

  • @mastertung7 I actually took a preamp out of an Ibanez SR-200. Had my luthier put it in the OLP. 'Worked great! Especially with that single humbucking pickup. 'Glad you like the moustache. That's the 2nd compliment I've gotten. Thanx.

  • Loving the stache.

  • @MongrelTarant Ughhh. Thanks. I call it my 'Dr. Watson' look.
