  • I've read all the comments on this vid and loads of people trying to get a redirect to Mary Blacks version.....not bad, but she sounds like another 100 female artists, nobody can sing and add character to a song like Luke. RIP LEGEND

  • can't wait to go home again. what a tune, he'll never be equalled.

  • The founding father of Irish folk music, born in the heart of Sheriff street, I'm truly proud to be a son of Grainne, and a close by neighbour of Luke, from all your fans in Ringsend, Dublin.

  • love luke,love this song,love ireland

  • I always like to think of Luke as God's Gift to Ireland, and this song as Luke's final Gift to the Irish....

  • @ariel4kees Can we make it God's gift to the world and Luke's farewell/Gift to Ireland? :) x

  • @kellyoneill Aye Kells, so it is, so it is....and a precious gift it is. This song has been done by a lot of people, but to be honest, I know of no other version so intense as Luke's . (Though I have to say, I also adore Mary Black's rendition of the song. Also adore Mary Black by the way :-) Living on the western shore of Holland, I salute you :-)

    cheers Kees

  • beautiful , no more to be said !

  • This is absolutely beautiful, paints pictures in your head......

  • If we EVER change our National Anthem......LET IT BE CHORUS FROM THIS SONG PLEASE.

  • @cnoc1916 U do know it was written by an englishman, dont you? Not that it makes a difference.

  • @TrueBlueEG8 who was it written by? fair play to em cuz its 1 a the best songs iv ever heard, huge thumbs up

  • @irishtom2thecore Phil Colclough i believe was the man who wrote it with his wife June, he is an english song writer but i think he spent a lot of his time here in ireland, and you are dead right its a really nice song!

  • @TrueBlueEG8

You answered your own question there.

  • @cnoc1916 I have been blessed to find a great Irish person, this music bring tears to my 68 years my family came to the America in 1640 English by birth but Irish in nature. I plan to go to England, Ireland, and Australia soon. Love folk music!

  • @8417home, cant be really irish if heading for england by choice xxx

  • lol, even asleep in a chair luke could sing better than anyone.

  • Reminds me of old times in Ireland ,

  • @colo856447 ur fuckin 32!! wot old days does dis song remind ya of????????

  • @burkepa It might remind them of yesterday - what does it matter to you? No need to be so agressive. Beatiful song

  • @burkepa harsh but true lol

  • just beautiful, there will never be another luke kelly, rip luke, ciaran and ronnie.I feel so lucky to have seen them perform many, many times, happy memories!

  • Maith an fear ,OConnellsheros. Its a sad time for me I had high hopes for the rugby world cup.Life goes on. A fairly new group "the high kings"( or something), have produced a version of the" rocky road to dublin"boy band V dubliners"

NO CHOICE.And Luke does a very difficult but beautiful song justice. No shock.

Luke you are still with us in so many ways.

  • Luke kelly sang for us all

  • shut up talking about the recession and just f****** listen to the songs truth and innocence! RIP luke

  • Let me know what you think of Mary Black,s version.

Glad you enjoyed your stay in Ireland particularly as I am a Corkman boy.Dont trust the rest of them especially those Kerry whores, great to see the dubs beat em in the football..

  • @xPoppedCherry As a fellow Rebel I have never been so torn in all my life. Corcaigh abu

  • i lived in cork for 5 months this past spring. best 5 months of my life. opened my eyes to the awesomeness of irish culture and society. no offence taken my friend, i can always appreciate the craic

  • Luke is dead but I agree, long live his music .Might be still worth listening toMary Black,s version of this song it has far more clarity.Luke,s greatest contribution is Raglan Rd.No offence meant about the fags, its just different interpretations of slang.I,m irish and we like a bit of crack with our entertainment, I dont mean a type of narcotic,JUST A BIT OF FUN

  • xPoppedCherry, im an American and not offended by your last comment. just offended that you bring that nonsense here while we listen to one of the greatest performers to ever grace this earth. long live luke kelly.

  • A song for Ireland whilst we wait for the Greek economy to collapse. Perhaps we should sing a song for Greece,Italy,Spain, and Portugal.Perhaps then listen to Mary Blacks, version of this song which is probably better.Gabh mo leath sceal.

Her voice unlike Luke,s has not been affected by 30 years of heavy drinking and fags.Thats the Irish fags I mean, not the american ones.

  • The country is a shambles, and recently people have been calling CORK ,Corkshire

since Lizzie Windsor visited. How ironic is that? Now that we have an IRELAND worth singing about and no longer worth fighting about we self destruct. How many bankers, politicians and property developers have been made to account for their recklesness none..Perhaps they should be next to die for Ireland. Then I will sing for Ireland although I probably wont win the Eurovision Song Contest

  • what a beautiful singer singing a beautiful gentle simple true ballad ... History will always remember you Luke

  • 6 people dont no real music when they hear it !!!!

  • Im a 21 year old Irish man and it breaks my heart that only 2 or 3 of my friends have people like Luke and Ronnie on their ipods. For me, Luke is the most gifted, talented singer to come from our wee country. I just hope that younger generations dont miss out on his music. I would listen to him all day and night. True Irish Legend.

  • @milo88333 That's what I like to hear (apart from only 2 or 3 orf your friends having the likes of Luke and Ronnie on their ipods) Keep on listening to the greats like Luke and Ronnie and f*** the recession :)

  • @milo88333 well said milo

  • if another song can sum up ireland i dont want to hear it i listened to this song 100 hundred times 4 years ago when my grandad brought myself and my twin brother to the moy for the weekend he told me more history about every county on the way even if half of it was bullshit...he died 2 months after a better man i will never know

  • Lukes swan song

  • God bless xxx

  • going back to Ireland and this time to the westcoast/ Connemara in august. Can't help shedding tears on hearing Luke's rendition of this magnanimous ballad. Long time ago on my second visit to the Green Isle,(1968) I met him and the Dubliners in 'O Donaghues pub in Dublin where I lived for a year (not in the pub though, but on Harcourt corner)

  • luke was a genuis their will never b anyone like him again it makes a fella proud to b irish listening to him. thanks for putting up d vids kell. does anyone know is their a live version of this song on youtube?

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • God be good to you Luke some memories don't pass

  • Lovely lovely lovely Luke. the genius. So much feeling in the voice. The words are magic too!!

  • Luke has made my eyes burn many times, his voice speakes to me from the great beyond....and its as though he is connecting with the countless generations of my Irish blood.A the few generations living here in america are meaningless.

  • This man will never be equalled.....

  • @jmurrayunderscore8

    the best never are

  • irelands elvis ................

  • The Irish memory is long. ...xPoppedCherry..the revulsion Ireland now has for the greed and stupidity of the bankers and the rest of them will not be forgotten ........our culture cannot be killed by unpaid mortgages or the Gombeen man... "the rent and taxes I could not them redeem...Remember Skibbereen"...and God Bless Luke Kelly ...he will be remembered too...but for a different reason.

  • the strange thing is that this was written by an english man ! but what a beautiful song

  • @Mrlane83 sometimes it takes the impartial view to see something so beautiful and put it into words, sometimes people dont appreciate what they have ontil its put into prospective for them.

  • was this version of the song the last one he recorded?

  • the 6 people who dont like tis need ther ears tested

  • The best version of this song and so near to Luke,s death. If Luke. was alive today he would have to do a lot more than Sing a Song for Ireland. To all the bankers ,property developers and politicians ,I say go to hell you wankers.

This man brought music ,culture and song to a Country, You Bastards! never deserved to be a part of.

  • @xPoppedCherry calm down

  • have no fear, you will never beat the irish!

I feel a march on berlin coming. As a people we have had enough.

If the euro is finished, let us be the ones to do it.

  • If the Eire had a king Lukey would have been he,

and ireland would now be free

  • and when the mist clears we shall rise again!! ireland needs to get back to basics , simple life with simple values how we missed this in the 1990s!! ireland is a wonderful nation and we must not forget luke and what it means to be irish!! god bless you luke!

  • @TheK00000 very true

  • Greatest Irish Singer ever

    All Hail Luke

  • Played this song in the car as I drove along the West Coast of Ireland at sunset last summer. Inspirational to say the least. Haven't let the recession or any other shit life may throw at you get me down since. We live on the nicest little island on planet Earth, we have good friends and good family, wouldn't swap it for anywhere else.

  • @kingboru2

This man had a true and incredible talent to move anyone who has a soul with his passion and feeling, it’s a gift given to so few. He had a gift that could not be bought or sold, he chose to let us all have glimpse of this gift, but as with too many gifted people there is always a price to be paid and it had to be LUKE who paid it, this is why we must never stop playing his songs and giving others a chance to share the gift he shared with us

  • This song was written by an Englishman who had lived in Ireland and this was his love song to the people and places he saw.

  • ......rip......

  • I really don't think a song ever became a true Irish song until Luke sang it! He's a true loss to Irish culture even now.....may there always be a road to meet you Luke........x

  • LUKE i love you man,im drunk now and missing my grand uncle,a storm is blowing in west clare RIP Jonn Ryan....

  • i agree this is the song for all irish people any irish person who has spent any time

in the west would understand what he is saying

  • im so proud of been irish.. seen most of d world, but il always come back to dublin.. as much as the place is gone to shite i still love it and hopefuly the country gets back on its feet, but home is home and we are still the best nation in my eyes

  • the lyrics should count for all manhood. but --- irish music is irish music

  • you should check out the mary black version. Unbelievable.

  • luke kelly definitely one of irelands greatest actually he is irelands greatest

  • whoever gave this song a thumbs down should be shot

  • I dont think the great Luke sang a song called The Mary Ellen Carter but i think its worth listening to. Its very relevant to our wonderful country. There is nothing wrong with Ireland or the Irish only the bastards that had the power lately.

  • This song can rouse a Nation!

  • im an Irish man living abroad, im moving home next month, i cant watch my country go down the tubes without doing something. men like Luke Kelly make me proud of my heritage and inspire me to do my bit in our hour of need. once we have sent the gamblers to jail we all need to work hard to make our country a fairer and more just society with a priority on looking after those in need of help

  • @karolodonovan1 id advise you not to come home cos its depressin here, majority of young people have left, its all eastern europeans here now.

  • @christoir246 I´ve lots of eastern european friends, I like the new Irish. im going home to help end the depression, i dont want to run from it

  • @karolodonovan1 well said. better opportunities, and weather (!), may lie on far off shores, but Ireland, its home. And despite the things that are messed up, you genuinely couldnt beat this gorgeous little country of ours.

  • @ciaronf: Was at Luke's funeral. Thousands at it. RIP. Wonder what he'd think of the economic situation here now, as he was a committed socialist.

  • @ciaronf: Was at Luke's funeral. Thousands at it. RIP

  • this truly is an amazing song u can hear and feel the passion and pride when the words come out of is mouth truly amazing :)

  • Thanks Kelly for sharing these amazing memories! I've thoroughly enjoyed them!

  • Just absolutely beautiful!!

  • my granda and i spent a weekend in ballydavid in kerry in a volkswagen camper bonding to this song .thers nothing like it to invoke a sence of abosolute pride in your nation and thats somthing no IMF or ECB man can take away.

  • So very relevant, the Irish people have to remember just how amazing their country is, in spite of the asses who pass themselves off as leaders....

  • @schiple yes, I agree

  • Great song & now a song that is more relevant today as Ireland has been sold to Fat cats... Ireland Forever!!

  • Oh, how I now cry for Ireland. Will the Irish ever be free?

  • Oh, how I now cry for Ireland. Will the Irish ever be free?

  • Want to see a 40 year old man cry? Come over mine when this song is on!!

  • Wanna Cry?

    1 part Luke Kelly

    3 parts Whiskey

    Enjoy

  • i can never put my hand on it but this song by luke seems to be a hidden personal veiw to his peoples of how inportant it is to be irish, hope we got that message right luke.

  • mo chara, what is going to become of our children, emigration, poverty, not living only existing, i shed a tear for our once proud country, that has been ran into the ground by a crowd of gangsters

  • @bower073 foreign gangsters

  • All I want to know is who are the 6 weird people who dislike this song?

  • @micksul67 they clicked the dislike button by accidant

  • In here I see Irish people who've had enough of the way the country has been led.

Rebels like Seán Hogan and Tom Barry voiced disappointment in the way Ireland was developing after the ROI gained freedom, so think how upset the men who shed their blood for Ireland's freedom would be about the state of Ireland today.

The war for Ireland's freedom is not yet over. Be as patriotic as you can and do not waver when you're opposed. Ireland needs her children to be summoned once again.

  • The Govermeant talks about gangland ireland

they didnt even need guns to kill the country and its people

  • @prick1000 Join me on my crusade to stop this tyrant trading a once owned irish product in Ireland, thats now sold out to the british and it's economy while the irish workers who made it famous Q on the dole. Jacobs biscuits was once a profit making company that employed hundreds of Irish folk, that is until an Irish man got greedy and shut it down sorce-ing the work out to foreign land.

  • @fakerbaker1000 That irish man should be ashamed of

himself..i dont know much about jacobs only its irish

famous and i think thomas mcdonagh held the fort down there

during the 1916 rising..that was enough alone to keep it irish..

  • @prick1000 spot on my friend , an irish man from the northside of dublin headed southside and took the food from the mouths of hundreds of workers, he still drives his fancy car and his kids get the best education all this while his wife decides what dress to wear with her new diamond necklace. makes me sick and our government allows this to happen because they profit with the brown envelopes.

  • @prick1000

Well Said. Garda should look to their corrupt bosses. These Incompetent bastards have raped and pilliged this country. No different too what the English did years ago.

    Fucking Traitors

  • Dear Mr Cowen,

Im sitting here wondering do you and your corrupt croneys know what youve done to this once great country. Your greed and Pals have distroyed a full generation. There are thousands of familys sleeping restlessly wondering will Santa come to their Kids. Elderly parents look at empty bedrooms and once again wait for letters from america and australia.

Shame on you what id give for ye too experience these peoples worry and pain. You are not irish men you are corrupt cowards.

    .

  • @will00078 A spineless bunch of traitors have brought the country to economic destruction. Crooks, liars and scum.

  • @Foxyarse2 every single one of them , bring back hanging i say lets see the rats run for the seweres where they should be .

  • @will00078 I fully agree with you will, they took back handers of the owner of Jacobs, he promised an input of money for investment to the plant on the belgard road , seeking his planning permission for the factory he shut down on the blessington road (fruitfield) he promised job security in Jacobs, and when he got his plans passed shut the factory down, the council went on record saying they where hood winked , there's an answer to hundreds of people that now Q on the dole, our government ?

  • @will00078 Join me on my crusade to stop this tyrant trading a once owned irish product in Ireland, thats now sold out to the british and it's economy while the irish workers who made it famous Q on the dole. • Luke Kelly recorded this song in the studio knowing that he was dying. The sadness in Luke's voice can be heard here. Not because he knows he is dying but that his time is limited living in the beautiful island of ireland... RIP Luke

  • Luke had the rare gift to be able to put emotion into the song so even the listener can feel that lump in their throat. Absolutely beautiful.
