Played this song in the car as I drove along the West Coast of Ireland at sunset last summer. Inspirational to say the least. Haven't let the recession or any other shit life may throw at you get me down since. We live on the nicest little island on planet Earth, we have good friends and good family, wouldn't swap it for anywhere else.
This man had a true and incredible talent to move anyone who has a soul with his passion and feeling, it’s a gift given to so few. He had a gift that could not be bought or sold, he chose to let us all have glimpse of this gift, but as with too many gifted people there is always a price to be paid and it had to be LUKE who paid it, this is why we must never stop playing his songs and giving others a chance to share the gift he shared with us

This man is a legend and was my fathers favourite artist with the Dubliners and raised us on their music. My father passed away 30/01/1984 . We were gobsmacked to find out Luke passed away the same day. Two legends taken too soon xx

I dont think the great Luke sang a song called The Mary Ellen Carter but i think its worth listening to. Its very relevant to our wonderful country. There is nothing wrong with Ireland or the Irish only the bastards that had the power lately.

im an Irish man living abroad, im moving home next month, i cant watch my country go down the tubes without doing something. men like Luke Kelly make me proud of my heritage and inspire me to do my bit in our hour of need. once we have sent the gamblers to jail we all need to work hard to make our country a fairer and more just society with a priority on looking after those in need of help

In here I see Irish people who've had enough of the way the country has been led.
Rebels like Seán Hogan and Tom Barry voiced disappointment in the way Ireland was developing after the ROI gained freedom, so think how upset the men who shed their blood for Ireland's freedom would be about the state of Ireland today.

@will00078 I fully agree with you will, they took back handers of the owner of Jacobs, he promised an input of money for investment to the plant on the belgard road , seeking his planning permission for the factory he shut down on the blessington road (fruitfield) he promised job security in Jacobs, and when he got his plans passed shut the factory down, the council went on record saying they where hood winked , there's an answer to hundreds of people that now Q on the dole, our government ?

This man is a legend and was my fathers favourite artist with the Dubliners and raised us on their music. My father passed away 30/01/1984 . We were gobsmacked to find out Luke passed away the same day. Two legends taken too soon xx

I`m a Danish man, But when I hear this song I do understand why the Irish people are so proud.
I imagine that I actually can feel the pride in this song, and he is singing it with such a glow.

From Nov 09 to March 2010, out of 19 council houses, allocated by Tralee council 11 went to immigrants. Many Irish people are on the housing waiting list, some waiting for 7yrs, and the houses are going to foreigners.

Luke Kelly recorded this song in the studio knowing that he was dying. The sadness in Luke's voice can be heard here. Not because he knows he is dying but that his time is limited living in the beautiful island of ireland... RIP Luke
