I just bought a used MS3 with 59k miles on it and the week after getting it home I noticed the same blue smoke coming out the tail pipe. Dealership found it was a bad turbo. Luckily I had about 800 more miles left on my warranty and they covered the replacement. Any thoughts on how this happens or how to keep it from happening again?
@impreza22bbs so you are going to judge just a FEW MS3s with blown turbos and not question anything else about the vehicle whether it be the owners fault for beating on it and not letting it cool, or running too much boost or anything else, and instead just chalk it up to the entire mazda brand not being a good manufacturer?
Its not the truth, it is definitely biased.... I could say the exact same for subarus with their glass transmissions not being a good car either.....
@rotor13 Few MS3's with blown turbo's? Go check out some of the message boards. There is more then a few. Hell I've known 4 guys with blown turbo's on MS3's. All of them were stock. I don't know why you're trying to deny a mazda issue. Also a horrible comparison between abuse on transmissions and abuse on a turbo. You kids crack me up.
just because the car is stock still doesnt prove your point..... merely compounds the ignorance that you cant have an open mind and let things be.
Abuse on a transmission is the exact same as abuse on a turbo..... keep dumping the clutch, mashing through the gears, missed shifts, grinding gears to find them, not changing the oil... all abuse.....
Turbo abuse - not driving easy the last few miles to your destination or letting car idle for a minute or two to cool turbo down to normal operating temps, hitting boost way too much, overboosting, boost creep, boost spikes, not changing engine oil and coolant regularly.... all abuse....
just because the abuse is in itself different, does not mean it is not abuse.
you can vouch for your forum buddies all you want, but they wont tell you how they drive the car, stock or modified
My brother has a Gen1 speed 3 since new...... still on the stock turbo making 330hp/350tq on stock boost with a Cobb AP and exhaust and FMIC, 60k miles and not one issue... but he doesnt beat on the car every day. But he does rape it when hes challenged.
Keeps a regular maintenance schedule..... and the only major item he needed to replace ever was his tires.
I can also ask the local MazdaSpeed club full of MS3's, 6's, and Miatas and see how many MS3's had turbo issues...... not one of them, because i've known them when they all bought their cars.
But thats heresay because you wouldnt believe me anyway..... if the problem was so widespread like you make it seem..... how come mazda doesnt have a TSB recall instead of just fixing it under warranty?
But i guess all you young guys with turbo cars think the turbo will last forever
@rotor13 Google mazda turbo tsb and see mazda acknowledged this problem. Yeah I guess you're right I guess they were so good mazda made a tsb about smoking after periods of idling. pwnd.
I've got the "revised turbo" from Mazda, still smokes. Catch can does it for some people, I needed a restrictor bolt too. Mazda now has a "revised PCV" in the works for early cars before 2008 build (which sucks because even the 2009 cars are smoking too).
If i removed the cat, that will void my warranty? Well my speed is smoking white on idle only, it start right after i removed the cat, put custom pipe and a magnaflow muffler, please help?
depending where u live, that can determine if removing the cat was the wrong choice. I live in CALI. so I cant get rid of my cats. removing a cat shouldnt void warranty. its smokes cause no cat anymore.
i put a turbop back exhoust, and then i noticed that the smoke was coming out blue, the technician told me that the turbo was leaking so im taking my speed 3 to warranty and well see what happens
Mine does about the same but only when it's cold (say, when I start it in the morning), and that smoke or steam goes away after I drive it a few miles, or even after 3-4 minutes of idling. When the engine is warm I can even breathe with no problem at 8-10 inches from the exhaust with the gases coming into my face.
Is there any reason to worry about that smoke/steam that comes out of the exhaust when the engine is cold?
Same prob here Just got the call today to confirm the turbo seal is bad, the mechanic explained that the turbo is leaking the oil into the exaust where then you get the oil burning causing the smoke, I cant get my car back to next week that sucks but I hope that I wont have alot more problems considering I only have 7400k on it, my first mazda probably shouldnt have gotten it considering I need for a everyday driver
I've heard of this happening. Supposedly, it is the turbo seals. If you just replaced the turbo, there's a chance the seals weren't properly installed. I'd have them re-do it at their own cost as they obviously did it wrong and didn't test their installation properly under load.
Mine was doing this 2 days ago. Only after I was running it hard. But I also was running with my blow off valve VTA. Can someone help me out to what the problem is.
Was this a consistent smoking or just every now and again? My MS3 will occasionally smoke just sitting at a light, but once I'm roling it usually clears up. It's hard to reproduce, so I'm concerned about taking it in for warranty work.
I worked for mazda for a little while there and in that time we had 2 brand new Mazdaspeed3(As you guys call them) We call them Mazda Mps over in Oz,Anyway we had 2 mps do this and 3 CX-7. I just laughd and said im not fixing theses ones
After how much time did this happen? I have a mazdaspeed 3 (mazda 3 MPS - the european version), used it 11500 km already (about 7200 miles) and I don't have this problem (at least not yet).
About the black soot, indeed they are build to run a bit rich. Some local chip tuners lowered the AFR from 12 to 11 because it seems like an AFR of 12 is a bit too much (they also increased the turbo pressure from 1.0 to 1.3bar, and the power at wheel increased from 243bhp to 287!!).
Yes, black soot is "normal" for that motor. It's due to a rich condition, like already mentioned. There's a known issue with the H-W K04 turbo on this car. Seals go bad, and cause oil to burn off through the exhaust system. This is why it can end up in the intake tract as well. Replacing the catylist will simply mask the smoke, not correct it.
i wounder if thats what is wrong with my eagle talon tsi awd. it does not smoke that bad but it has been sitting for a year and i just pulled it out of my grandmas house and when you step your foot into it good it smokes blue. altho it should just be because it has not been run for a while.
That sucks. I was actually really considering this car. Infact, I was at the dealership today and I saw black soot on the exhaust tips. I was like WTF? Oil soot from a BRAND NEW car?
I didn't buy it, then I started to research on it and it brought me here.
I'd hate to buy a brandnew car and for it to be a lemon.
What do you owners think? Be brutally honest, get it or no?
Have had mine for a month. It's a great car for the money. If you have money for a $30K+ car, then you will easily find things to complain about. But it's probably going to be the funnest sport compact (with utility) on the road. Should last a long time if you don't modify, but it doesn't need any as it comes modded from Mazdaspeed, and thus, warrantied. I still see Mazdaspeed Proteges running strong (those were back in 2003).
My MS6 smokes like a chimney as well. I had the turbo replaced a few thousand miles ago, because I came across tons of oil that had been regurgitated into the hot side of my TMIC from the turbo outlet. Neesless to say, oil made its way through the IC, to the throttlebody, and beyond I'm sure. When this happened, it never smoked, because I had the 2nd catylist in place. Now, I have an RP there and she llooveeess to smoke, even with the newer turbo.
Overall my car's been okay, other than the turbo issue. My car smokes now, but not terribly. As a result, it's consuming alot of oil. Which may not be a bad thing, considering how contaminated with fuel the oil may be after a couple thousand miles. :)
I think the turbo issue is subjective, as far as why they go bad, how long they last, etc. There's been mention that a change in factory backpressure will excellerate/aggravate the problem.
One of the biggest reasons why I went with my Altima instead of this car. I learned that alot of MS6's and 3's were affected by this. And I no that it would have been fixed under warranty but I like to mod my cars and I bet I would have had to bring everything back to stock before I went to the dealership
some times its not the seals but its because your turbo needs to use more oil and that why it smokes my dad has a mazdaspeed 3 and i have a protege puttin a mazdaspeed protege engine in it by the way nice car.
well, had my turbo replaced, no problems! sucks on the mazda part to come out with a bad turbo, and sometimes i curse about it...but when i drive it, i forget about everything... or beat on some 350zzzzzzzz....nap time
What kind of oil to do you use? You should NOT use 5w30 or 5w20, even tho the manual calls for 5w30. You *should* use a synthetic 40wt (0w40, 5w40, 10w40).
That sucks. I am not going to install a RP, DP or TBE in my car until this stupid turbo smoking issue is completely diagnosed by Mazda and the community. Sucks. The CPE-TBE give you some sick power but your problem is what I am worried about.
I have the CPE Turboback and my turbo seals just went up yesterday. The car has a STRONG odor of oil burning and I get a lot of white smoke. Worst part of it is Mazda doesn't want to warranty it due to me having the downpipe.
god damn it, i've just noticed it 2 days ago, after installing a RP. now i have to take it off and take the car to the dealer. same story, didn't beat on it or nothing. this is so upsetting.
That sucks man, Ive heard though if you swap out the race pipe you wont see any smoke, that you actually collect moisture and the mixture of exhaust looks similar to this. So maybe it could just be related to that. They said they had a test for the turbo, but I dont think they do, they will just try to let it sit for a min and rev it. So Im not sure but best of luck if you do have bad seals.
@sleserginekolog1 you dont have a bad turbo, and you can prevent this kind of problem by jest reading forums... by installing an rp or dp you decrease the after turbo pressure which eliminates much of the vacuum in the turbo that would push the oil back into the engine. This causes the turbo seals to start to leak oil into the exhaust
I don't know how your gonna do that with 250hp? When i race cars like that i sometimes under estimate them and probbably wouldn't even down shift. thats why you think you always smoke Gs. That have over 300hp.
Ha, apparently it is something that is going to take you a while to conceive. Seeming the G35 weights about 400lbs more, has more horespower 1K rpms later, has 20Lbs less torque 2k rpms later. Honestly your a dumbass, just stop breathing, if you know how to...
why do you have to be such a 6 year old douchebag and say that about the g35? that's just fucking stupid and has nothing to do with this video. go play in traffic.
G35s are nice, However you need a lot more than a damn exhaust, or an intake, or plenum spacer, cams blah blah blah to beat a Ms3. So when Im on my way to get grociers, or Better yet, when Im on my way home from buying a whole weeks worth, after I bought a 42in flat panel plasma, and picked my girlfriend up from the airport with luggage, I would STILL be able to smoke your ass, AND have a MODEL Laugh at you as you TRY to race me with your Artificial Cock. Save it for someone who cares kid ;)
When I drove it home to my garage it felt quicker, but I havent drove it since. It did seem to spool nice and smooth though. I think it takes a little bit of time for the seals to go so I doubt you would notice it from one day to the next.
lol thats what I was thinking if it wasnt resolved. However, Mazda is agreeing to warranty my turbo, the work has not started, but they said they would do it. But I have to return the car to stock, for them to honor my warranty, which now would only be removing my intake.
dude, that is a turbo seal all the way. That sucks bad, i would flip out if I saw this on my MS3. It seems like the car has been driven very hard. What are the miles?
Actually I just had my first oil change at 3000 miles..... No seriously I have 14000 and I dont think its been driven much harder then any other speed3 out there... It does such though.
I don't know where you live, but if it gets cold, do you warm up the car? I've been hearing about problems with the car and cold weather. At least the dealership will fix it... right dude?
I always warm the car up, let it sit to cool down. I take proper care of it, change the oil every 3k, I dont do burnouts. Its just a straight up defective car, I really dont think I had any role in it. The Dealership should but as of right now Im unsure.
Whats up man, Yeh Im gettin pretty sick of my car, its actually in the process of being lemoned, but as of right now mazda thinks my car is fixed so their just offering me minimal cash offers to keep the car. I should have just waited another year to buy one lol.
That's fucked up,how many miles ?

soo can u tell a difference in driveability when the turbo seals go wrong...i wanna know just in case in the future.
squanchy459 4 years ago
When I drove it home to my garage it felt quicker, but I havent drove it since. It did seem to spool nice and smooth though. I think it takes a little bit of time for the seals to go so I doubt you would notice it from one day to the next.

I hope mazda does the right thing with these turbo seals I love the hell out of my ms3

buy a turbo upgrade like atp
abellerose6099 4 years ago
lol thats what I was thinking if it wasnt resolved. However, Mazda is agreeing to warranty my turbo, the work has not started, but they said they would do it. But I have to return the car to stock, for them to honor my warranty, which now would only be removing my intake.

turbo seal issue??

Get your turbo rebuilt bro
Rican219 4 years ago
dude, that is a turbo seal all the way. That sucks bad, i would flip out if I saw this on my MS3. It seems like the car has been driven very hard. What are the miles?
Alexsered 4 years ago
Actually I just had my first oil change at 3000 miles..... No seriously I have 14000 and I dont think its been driven much harder then any other speed3 out there... It does such though.
voiceKoil731 4 years ago
I don't know where you live, but if it gets cold, do you warm up the car? I've been hearing about problems with the car and cold weather. At least the dealership will fix it... right dude?
Alexsered 4 years ago
I always warm the car up, let it sit to cool down. I take proper care of it, change the oil every 3k, I dont do burnouts. Its just a straight up defective car, I really dont think I had any role in it. The Dealership should but as of right now Im unsure.

Also the temp outside is about 65-70 w/ low humidity.

Whats up man, Yeh Im gettin pretty sick of my car, its actually in the process of being lemoned, but as of right now mazda thinks my car is fixed so their just offering me minimal cash offers to keep the car. I should have just waited another year to buy one lol.
voiceKoil731 4 years ago
