You can't let the surface freeze over, so you have to keep a spot open with an air pump or a small fountain pump. The koi hibernate and you don't have to feed them for 5 months! Another bonus is, the nasty parasites and evil bacteria also hibernate.
I always wondered what happened to ponds with koi on winters at places that snows! Incredibly hardy fish they are it seems. Isn't the ice bad for them? How cold is too cold for them?
My original fish came from a local Koi dealer, usually just folks around town who buy them in quantities online.
