This fan film (although completely off cannon) was actually pretty well made for the time it came out. I prefer the Spirits of the Force Trilogy, which centers on Kyle Katarn and Jaina Solo.

You can blame all the wrong elements in TDR on competing egos, cut corners, and budget constraints. Back in 1997 fan films were the exception not the rule, with effects software still being explored. The original script was alot more intricate and true to canon than the finished product.
