As a kid in the 70's i had the ORIGINAL poster that the logo came from. And it is Jerry West. We need to leave some things alone. It's called RESPECT! West is a perfect example of hard work and leadership. Nuff said..thank you.
I was watching Barlkey and the other dopes he works with talking about changing the logo. They were saying it should be updated and it should be Majic or Jordan. That would be fine but Larry Bird never came into the conversation. If they think Bird doesn't belong in the same class they shouldn't even be talking about the subject. They should check out the You Tube videos of Magic talking about Bird the night they had the retirement ceremony for Bird at the Boston Garden.
Really, if you want the logo to be representative of basketball as a sport, any logo definitively modeled after an individual would have to be Bill Russel IMO. If you want it to be from within the past decade, use Duncan. Or, how about a role-player? Maybe Horry or someone similar (though Horry is kind of...singular),
See, this is my personal worry about the NBA today--I was just thinking about this in the context of those Kobe-Lebron muppet commercials--is that it's too focused(continued)
on promoting individuals, when basketball is a true team sport--not as much as hockey or football, but more so than baseball. For that matter, neither Bryant nor Lebron might make it to the Finals this year (because the team around Lebron is too weak, among other reasons). It goes back to MJ, really (and I'm not blaming him BTW: I'm blaming the sports media and the headhonchos of the NBA). When he retired (after both his second and his last times) there was this scramble over finding (cont)
"the next MJ"--I still think that might've screwed up Vince Carter, amongst other people--because the NBA had marketed itself around him for so long. I wasn't around for the 80's, but from what I can tell, even though it was Magic and Bird, it was also about their teams: Bird's Celts and Magic's Showtime Lakers.
So the point behind that ramble is I feel that either we should not explicitly model the logo after an individual player, (cont)
or, if we do, we should model it after one of the best team players in NBA history.
And Russel, I should remind everyone, only failed to win the championship TWICE in his entire career. He has to double up to fit all his rings on his hands. The only reason he should not be used as tyhe model would be that he's from about 40 years ago. So I vote for Duncan if we want to use the immediate past. If we go back a little bit farther...well, guess who has the best Win% in NBA history?
