There may have been an owl around- a lot of birds don't get along with owls.
One time I came home to my parents' house to find a scene like this- *hundreds* of crows in the big trees around their house, cawing. Then I saw a big owl sitting in one of the trees. It was one of the creepiest things I've ever seen.
If they're mostly smaller birds, sparrows and the like, they could be informing each other of a predator in the area.
That happened once in a house I lived in, where the sparrows were hiding in a bush, and there was a hawk in a tree nearby. They kept up a continuous racket until the hawk flew away.
