  • Biomechanics ftw!

  • that grass hopper does a backflip

  • One of the most useless inventions ever.

  • @dkyx Your stupidity is awesome

  • gr8 idea .......!!

  • lol ... thats awsome !!! i bet there expencive though ???

  • Imagine a swarm of these!

  • god i love NewScientist. but i hate sandrines voice

  • My cellphone vibrator will start the apocalypse.

  • *sigh* That's starting to get really old

  • BWAHAHAHA

  • Brilliant!

  • Just hope they don't turn into robot locusts.

  • imagine this:the grasshopper goes to the moon....it jumps...and floats off into space......

  • Well, it's not impossible if they got big enough springs :D

    Damn, just think about that...

  • but wont it break when it comes back down? i mean what happens if it falls on a rock? little tweaks??...they need to consider alot! but good desighn for what its worth!

  • Just like a bug, it doesn't have enough mass to damage itself in a fall. You can drop a beetle from a thousand feet and it will hit the ground and scurry off unharmed. It doesnt weigh enough to crush itself on impact.

  • Neil Armstrong:a small stepforaman butone giant (LEAP) for mankind!

  • yeah, but what if it lands on a small pebble? what if it fells on the side? this robot will certainly not become an explorer in other planets....

  • landing is more important

  • Explore other planets... I first thought she meant that they could jump high enough to get there!

I would still suggest working on standard legs or wheels, or best of all, a flying robot. I have a feeling grasshoppers won't be colonizing other planets any time soon.

  • "Explore other planets... I first thought she meant that they could jump high enough to get there!"

    Hahahahahah :O Good one :)

  • why dont they have wings like a real grasshopper for balance?

  • One jump at a time ;)

    That's probably next.

  • what wold happen if it fell on its side?

  • One day, I was minding my own business, and this little thing jumped into face and killed my ass. Now, what what was that?

  • withcraft!!

    burn her!

  • an army of grasshoppers?!? BBQ y dont they attach lasers or rockets to them so they can take out enemy "martians" and jump un the aliens.

  • me too i want an army so i can take over mars and be friends with aliens

  • I want one

  • me too, even if its only to scare the crap out of my little sister xD

those things are cool.. but can they land where they want? theyre is much work to be done to make them "explore other planets" but i think if we (ppl) try hard, we will get that far. keep up the good work boys (or girls maybe)

  • Imagining a swarm of these is quite a sight to behold, though they do seem really versatile.

If they contain camera technology it would be pretty expensive to mass produce these.

  • Now it just needs to be able to upright itself after landing (should we say falling?)...and aim before each jump.

  • lol even tho that was meant to happen it looked so funny

  • yes mam.. lol...

  • lmao 00:26

that must have been the most drunk grasshoper ive ever seen!!! what kind of jump was that!!!!!

  • grasshoppers tend to land on their backs when they fall as often as they land on their feet. it wasnt drunk =)

  • it had to be drunk... =/

  • Great! It seems easy to build, once you get the details from the technical paper. Which toy manufacturer will produce it first?

  • nice

  • I really get tired of "predictions" that somehow armies of small robots are going to accomplish anything by animal mimicry...it's a tired sales pitch to get that "woweee" factor.

  • heliosheath:

I'm so glad to see someone write that!

  • they laughed at the idea of aeroplanes and horseless carriages, too. science and discovery is about opening your mind...

  • Great, now we can't just have normal bugs, we have to have robots.

  • ...and you can use it as bait to catch robotic fish.

  • I second that. Only actual use for such a device.

  • Rofl they even gave examples of good uses for it. ignore much?

  • things have to get be bad to get better!

  • yes zzvideozz, we didn't get to see how high it goes. but what's more important, is that we didn't even get to see it land. we didn't get to see a natural grasshopper land properly either... if this thing is gonna search for survivors, it's gonna FAIL... badly

  • cool!

  • kinda creepy actually, imagine the skys darken with them like a locust plague,

except they r robots from some crazy country. We really would need Yoshimi then. !

  • You don't get to see how high it goes....

  • nice!

  • very cool

  • Sadrine's accent and so called nasal voice is not annoying!

  • no, but she is a terrible reporter. its like listening to a 7th grader stumble through a textbook.

  • sweeet!

  • Toystores next!
