  • I'm in college. I'm just making sure I can lose weight and still get shitfaced on the weekends. Guess I can. But then I gotta work out even harder the next day. But I can eliminate it no problem.

  • Working on getting back to my high school fitness athletic ability. Beer is definitely gotta go to a glass per week. Thanks for the motivation. Subbed!

  • Mannn I try not to drink but I party a lot and the ladies and liquor... Can't help it but I do my cardio and workout. I think I need to refocus and cut down on liquor. Thanks for the info

  • another thing about alcohol is that the body uses it for energy, so the body does not use the fat you have for energy, so not that you getting extra calories with alcohol, but you're also using it as energy which means you won't burn fat

  • What if I'm looking to gain weight?

  • every time i want to drink i watch this.

  • I'm not against drinking, and I agree with steve in that if you incorporate it into the total daily caloric requirements to run a calorie deficit, you will still lose weight. The reason I try to eat the healthier, less processed foods more often is not so much about calories and weight loss, but merely embracing a healthier lifestyle. Hell, I could run a McD's diet plan running a calorie deficit and lose weight. But despite the weight loss, I doubt i'd be healthy

  • Decent no nonsense advice (subscribed) I would also add that drinking also lowers your will power and can create cravings for junk food (spirits sugar rush followed by hunger crash) - my feeling is that this is the real problem with alcohol. I actually like a drink after a good workout it helps me relax and sleep well - but it is also bad calories and will not contribute to glycogen repletion. So have a drink but eat extra healthy for balance and avoid junk food at all costs.

  • ha ha ..i like this guy

  • i usually only have a dinner during the day, so is it bad to take in most of your calories in one meal?

  • @zombiekicker lyer!

  • Is this a lost episode of The Office? Or is that Steve Carrell's brother?

  • since I got divorced I find it's difficult to stick to the diet for the simple fact that I go out a lot to restaurants and pubs to socialize. Sitting at home alone doesn't appeal to me, but I"ve been trying to do more ordering green tea or something a little healthier from the food items. I never thought that the pressure to get out and fight loneliness would be the hardest part of my fitness routine.

  • Great video, as always. Alcohol is calories. Cutting one's daily alcohol intake is a good way to cut calories. I'm trying to cut bodyweight and one thing I've done is eliminate one 16 ounce malt liquor a day. That's about 250 calories gone without even missing it too much.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV

what about the effects of alcohol on protein synthesis?...its proven that it reduces the effectiveness of muscle repair. scooby1961 would scream into a pillow at this video

  • @kingkevinjoy Yeah this guy is an idiot. Its not only the calories in the alcohol that affect you, its also (and most important) the way alcohol slows down your metabolism during and stores fat (carbs) from the drinks and food youre eating due to your body concentrating on trying to get rid of the alcohol in your system because its a toxic. Its as if you turn into Endomorph for a whole day (or even days depends on how much you drink that night) after you consume the alcohol.

  • when i was losing 25 pounds, i used to drink like once every weekend but it would usially be like alot of beer with friends like around 8-12 beers. btw i used to weigh 250. lbs.and i wud also throw in some unhealthy things along with that and i still lost weight. i really tried hard to run a mile every day. but when i ran a mile i wud go the fast i could go.kinda depends who u r.

  • that does sound stupid, I talk to people all the time in the gym that want to make a big fuss about what they are not going to give up, and it really pisses me off because they know I went from being fat to being a top NPC Texas Bodybuilder so they come up to me and ask me questions just so they can down what im doing or argue that what im doing is wrong when they have belly fat and I am ripped to shreds, they think I am strange because I choose to be ripped over any food, drug or alcohol

  • @Bethesdia Wow you are really fond of yourself aren't you. Do you make out with your reflection in the mirror?

  • @jwallbanger naw but I do like how I look after being fat for so long, im thinkin you must hate how you look !!!! talkin about me making out with myself, what the heck does jwallbanger mean

  • @Bethesdia ok. sorry. please forgive me and i wish you all the best. god bless.

  • would canabis effect muscle growth cause only after my workouts i will occasionaly smoke cannibis and it wil help me get the proper rest i need cuause i have trouble sometimes getting my 8 hour sleep to properly rest my muscles for the next day ahead.

  • @inofe LOL! If you train hard you should be fine :O)

  • @inofe thats what i like to hear...weed wont effect you at all...next time try smoking then get pumped up and hit a heavy punching bag for 20 minutes with your favorite music blasting....you WILL get addicted to that ritual and WILL get into shape...trust me it is a great workout...people tend to rest when they are high but a little excersize and you get one hell of an adreniline rush

  • @inofe hehe, so..... it helps you sleep eh? just take a herbal sleeping supplement! i've been staying away from the stuff for about 2 months now so i know how it is. i have friends who can smoke and it dosen't bother them at all but i have 2 small kids and i need to be alert, so i quit. i found after years of smoking it, i just couldn't get up happy in the mornings. now i am a total morning person! i still really want to smoke tho. rest those muscles my friend!

  • @inofe Its a pain killer which means means technically you could train harder but cannabis doesnt exactly motivate you to do very much at all kinda undermining yourself plus its going to fuck up your lungs fast. eat a cake or two at weekends meet it in the middle.

  • Actually, I burn and work out quite a bit. Not the best for your energy level no, however i use it as a reward or motivation, knock out these 100 pushups and 100 crunches and i get a bongload yay! Take it from Arnold back in the day he was frigin mr. olympia and was smoking pot. All depends on the person, and their self control. If i get the munchies i just grab a bowl of fruit and veggies now instead of chips and cookies, replaced soda with tea adjusting my lifestyle was the best thing i did.

  • @brenden619 I wonder if slowing your heart rate down and then training is a smart thing also if your more likely to injure yourself if you cant feel pain, are you more likely to tear a muscle by being tense or chilled out and relaxed on weed, I know the Carthaginians used to give it to their rowers to keep them calm and act a pain killer when going into battle. Interesting about Arnold. Personally I love the stuff but quite smoking and love being sober rather than off my tree all the time.

  • @inofe "would canabis effect muscle growth cause only after my workouts "

I would be more worried about getting the munchies

  • @inofe Actually, I burn and work out quite a bit. Not the best for energy no, however i use it as a reward or motivation, knock out these 100 pushups and 100 crunches and i get a bongload yay! Take it from Arnold back in the day he was frigin mr. olympia and was smoking pot. Definitely a good alternative to drinking, depends on your preference though. It's definately my choice, cheers!! No its not going to affect your muscle growth negative, or positive. It depends on you, work hard eat healthy

  • They used to gave puppies alcohol to make new midget breeds... so thats about gaining muscle

  • couse i look this i go Drink 4 sixers beer and get drunk still muscle !!!

  • dont eat on the day you drink

  • I drink 2 beers a day and maintain my weight At 158. I just incorporate it into my diet.

  • isn't it true that alcohol lowers testosterone levels though? and it maks you feel like crap so can't work out with the same intensity, and therefore alcohol is gonna slow down your fat loss. because less intensity = less muscle built = fewer calories being burned throughout the day

  • steve must bang his head on the wall all the time with all these comments , come on people , it doesnt matter if u have beer , shot s, pizza , sugar , fat , carbs , anything , as long as u dont eat or drink more calories than ur body is burning off u will lose weight , eat more calories than ur body can burn and u will put weight on , its so simple . calories in verus calories burnt . stop with the dumbass question , u wonder why steve doesnt reply . i would be in tears , keep it simple .

  • LOL!

  • @rayner1399 Agreed, agreed, agreed! Finally! Someone gets it!

  • right on everyone says to absolutely get rid of it

  • no liquor slows down your metabolism point blank cause your liver is working on getting rid of alcohol first and then food later after alcohol has been process by the body can we say get to the back of the line fat burning process. So limit your drinking time, I only drink onces a week now and I see a big differents in my body.

  • Steve,

    become a beachbody coach!!

  • Im doing a fitness routine right now, and the only time i drink alcohol is once a week at a party maybe. Otherwise i try to avoid it.

  • Aw man...

Its the age old question....whats better for your waistline..Beer or liquor..

In my case, I sip good tequila, not that cheap shit...But I like a few cold beers on the weekends...

I realize that any alcohol is detrimental...but am I better off with tequila or beer? Also, does alcohol affect muscle "gain" ?...I have read that alcohol creates muscle soreness and dehydration ...Any advice is helpful !

  • If calories are equal...is beer necessarily worse for your gut than hard liquor?

  • @ceeIoc

Anything carbonated is hard on your stomach and esophagus.

However anything alcoholic is bad for your gut - it doesn't really matter which one they are both filled with cancer causing toxins.

And yes, Alcohol is a Carcinogen.

  • Nope. Both are great for your gut!

  • quick note on how to count calories for alcohol. alcohol has 7 calories per gram

  • wouldnt that depend on the drink chaaarge? i mean surely beer will have more than say vodka?

  • I'm not sure about that. vodka has a higher alcohol % so I think it has more calories per cl

  • I believe that booze has other components to it that makes you fat. I used to tend bar, and watched a lot of people SIT for hours on end. The only time they'd move is if they had to go to the bathroom. The other thing about booze that affected me big time, was the insulin spike and subsequent drop in blood glucose levels some time later. BAR TIME eating!!! If I drank, it was off for omlettes, hash browns, sour cream, muffins, and cookies afterwards. Never went hom drunk on an empty stomach.

  • LOL! Good point!

  • i don't drink beer but vodka, is it any better than beer?

  • @Lonao

No. All Alcohol is bad for you if you can live without it that's the best option.

If you can't - no more than one standard drink per day - 1 beer, or 1 shot of Vodka or one glass of wine.

But if you're body building .. I'd keep it to maybe 1 a week tops.

  • bulge!!!!!!! lmao

  • I'd like to know if it could make me overweight? ^^ Please, I'm chronically under.

  • Im almost 21 and ive been 100 lbs since like 8th grade... =-/

but since iv'e started drinking beer everyday ive gained 20 lbs over about 8 months.

but i work out to keep it all sculpted...

My advice to you is to smoke hella weed and drink beer.

When you are drunk and high you'll have the munchies times 3.

so youll eat alot plus the beer would b like those protein shakes adding extra calories and shit...

i know it sounds weird but it works.

  • weight lifters should smoke weed...even b4 you lift..it makes the contractins feeell crraazzzyyy good!...

  • Its true. Smoke weed prior and during weight training will make you feel your contractions ripping harder. This makes it easier to maintain good form.

  • Thank you for some real honest advice on drinking and weight training. I am tired of people harping about how you can't be serious about your workouts if you have drinks here and there. Have you seen Scooby's alcohol video? I guess to each his own, right? Thanks for posting!

  • thats why i drink bud LIGHT!

  • alcohol period makes it so your body dosen't operate right. lol! that means i need to stop drinking over the weekends.

  • stick to crack its good for weight loss

  • My brothers a fat crackhead, meth is good for weight loss

  • lol i was kidding

  • The calories aren't that important. Again, it's the chemical and hormonal response to the alcohol. You didn't mention that alcohol is toxic to the body and is converted to acetate after it passes through the liver. Acetate is a form of fuel the body uses for energy BEFORE it burns fat. So, a heavy drinker can jog all day long burn only acetate and very little body fat.

  • sounds like he is going to have a rough day jogging.

  • well beer wouldnt have as many calories as mix drinks and wine,, i drink 1-2 beer and then workout while im feeling the alcohal and makes me workout extremely better than i would if i were sobar some people try it and get back at me and also the effects

  • I guess working out tipsy would be more productive than working through detox, so that approach may work well for you.

  • I heard somwhere that 4-5 units of alcohol a week lowers your testosterone production by 30% or something around that. Is this true? And would that effect gains?

  • As you get older excess liquor damages the liver. When this happens the liver is not able to break down estrogen in the male body. This will cause a variety of side affects. Muscle loss could be one.

  • Whoa. Thanks for the speedy reply, Steve.

  • ahh i keep commenting on your videos because theyre so awesome. i like an ice cold lager every once and again, but heck it racks up really fast.

  • my dad did that, worked his booze into his diet......he lost 120lbs doing this

  • is it true that alcohol makes you lose weight slower because it slows the liver function down! like could someone really have 2 drinks a night within the daily calorie requirements and still lose weight?

  • Does Volka give you extra weight?

  • 24/m/CA

A "serving" of standard vodka (40% ABV) is 1.5oz,and contains 80 calories.

When I started to change my ways to lose weight in college, I naturally became a hard-liquor drinker. I only drank beer when playing beer pong. 8-)

To control calories, I drank liquor via shots+chaser or w. a splash of juice, S&S, lemon, etc.

Therefore, when u crave that pizza or them nachos, the carbs (mainly what u crave when drinking) are not excessive, since u took in few while actually drinking. :-)

  • Glad you likemy stuff! Eating before you go to bed makes NO difference. It's the total calories eaten in 24 hours and the total calories burned in 24 hours!

  • thank you so much im not overweight about want to lose 30 lbs and you are so nspirational like ur style

  • You are very welcome. You can do it! It just takes time, effort and courage!!!

  • Steve great vid on the weight loss and alcohol portion. Heres my problem. I cannot eat in the mornings when I wake up! Makes me sorta sick, afternoons is ok, and dinner, but I also stay up late. With that I always seem to eat something for going to bed, which I know isnt good for me. What can I do to change this? Thanks and Im a new subscriber to your awesomeness!!

  • Thanks! Just telling the truth. New website in about a week. Please tell a friend. Steve

  • Damn, this guys good !!

  • alcohol is poop from bacteria

  • Dont drink alcohol, smoke weed. Weed has no calories :)

  • you may gain them from the munchies tho aha

  • At weekend nights, I eat sugary sweets and its hard to give them up when everyone is stuffing themselves and I'm not. Exactly the same when people drink.

All I can do is try.

  • aw, weekends are going to be hard......

  • they always are, after you have a lot to drink make sure u take like 2-3 teaspoons of honey to replenish the glucose in your body no more hangovers for you

  • Luckily i don't drink!

  • ditto. =)

  • I drink, but not beer because I know it contains sugar, and even if I do drink, I limit it to once a week, like every weekend, just to unwind a bit, and not too much.

  • jackhammer, I don't know what you'll drink that doesn't have sugar in it... alcohol is fermented sugar. So anything with alcohol has sugar buddy.

  • Stop spamming you fucking retard! Your saying the same thing on every one of his vids! Shut the fuck up!

  • hahaha this takkibak guy is hilarious

  • hahaha "takkibakos" why don't u start losing fat instead of hating... Steve is a great guy, and he helps people for free

  • coolnewyorker, he does help people out for free but just a FYI nothing is free... I'm sure these videos are helping his personal training buisness

  • get off steves dick

  • It looks like you are very unhappy :D

    sucks to be you, takkibakos

  • doesnt it cause muscle breakdown or inhibit your muscle gains

  • it could but mixing alcohol with weight training is a no no lol.

as long as you drink once in awhile you would be fine.

  • alchol decreases testostorne production

  • I completely disagree with your statement. I have drank alcohol and still felt my testosterone pumping through my body the next day.

  • Bullshit!! Alcohol is bad for you period!!! I used to drink a lot of alcohol before I got into wieght lifting and martial arts so I know the deal. My body didn't start to change until I gave up alcohol. Now i'm strong and fit for the first time in my life. I have a guinness about 10 times a year, once upon a blue moon but I don't gather with friends and drink for the sake of drinking anymore. Put down the bottle and pick up the weights and the gloves and do your thing. Love your body.

  • Actually, alcohol in small quantities has proven to have health benefits, its about moderation.

    Peace

  • That was a reply to RenegaeMystic btw.

  • No more than a baby aspirin and a handfull of grapes though.

  • thank you

  • Not only that your adding extra calories your body turns alcohol to acetate wich is then used as your primary energy source.Anything you ate will be stored as fat.

  • does alcohol slow metabolism??? also is it true it lowers testosterone therefore leading to smaller muscles etc??

  • yeah, it slows down your metabolism

  • damn im glade i found your tube vids, great stuff buddy

  • "drunkorexia": popular at college campuses everywhere!

  • nice terminology!

  • A few things

A mix of diet and rum is only 60-70 cal per serving.

Alcohol increases your hunger....ever heard of the "drunkn munchies?!?!?"

    Alcohol turns quickly into sugar.

    That turns into fat!

  • one thing that is for sure is that don't expect to make many positive gains weight lifting or gaining muscle in that matter, when you are consuming 4 or more drinks a night, once a week or more.

  • What steve needed to clarify in his video that there is a difference between having one or two drinks a night, and having more than 3 drinks a night. Having more than 3 drinks a night has very negative effects on the body. You may be able to still lose weight while drinking heavily by substituting those calories from alcohol with other calories from your daily diet(this is true), but you will be losing the wrong type of weight.

  • steve is kind of missing the point. Alcohol has calories, yes that is true, but he is also leaving out 3 more important things. 1. The body catabolizes all alcohol into fat 2. A night of drinking can diminish a person's normal water retention for the next 48 hours. 3. Alcohol lowers testosterone along with weakening joints and ligaments.

  • im not sure about the last 2 but the body turns all calories into fat if u dont burn them and by having a daily calorie deficit u cant gain fat

  • Where do you learn to calorie count and how do you figure out how many calories a day you should be on?

  • Excellent, it sounds all very logic. Thanks again.

  • great video 5/5 :D

  • i love your videos!

you are inspirational, clever, have humour and obviously know what you're talking about!

    keep on posting videos!

    hugs from germany

    Heli

(who is losing weight and needs every advice she can find)

  • thanx for answering my question steve, did this man recieve the nobel peace prize for being out standing?

  • i think that if you truly want to love your body, you need to eat (and drink) clean. sorry, but i don't want to pickle my liver or brain.

  • Steve, can I just drink 1500 calories worth of alcohol every day and end this nonsense?

  • no, 1500 total daily calorie, depending on your weight, height, etc...

  • LOL!

  • awesome stuff as always

  • Does alcohol have an effect on your nervous system over time?

  • Your awesome... I subscribed.

  • Thanks, I'll keep that in mind since I am one of those people.

  • ive never been a big drinker, but i noticed that whenever i did i ended up being hungry and then i would go for the junk food becouse i had less control of my judgment becouse i was drunk!

  • after a night of heavy drinking you're so dehydrated in the morning you look so cut, lol =P

  • LOL Ben!

Yeah, I have the exact same thing. I lose a lot of weight after a night of drinking, but yeah, it's like you said lol - Water loss n dehydration.

It's funny though, if you think about the amount of "cardio" you get while dancin', plus the 10 hours since your last meal while you're out... the deficit is there! ;)

    DISCLAIMER: NOT A HEALTHY WEIGHT-LOSS OPTION! =P

  • better not drink, period. lets evolve.

  • Who told you there are "almost no calories" in liquor? The calories are there. The effect on your blood sugar is there. You're joking yourself if you think it's "almost nothing".

  • A strong coctail with twice the alcoholic content of a beer or glass of wine contains 130 calories, or roughly the same amount as one of either of the other two.

  • ive stopped eating chrisps chocolate cake fast foods for like a month and lost 22 pounds i eat small portions of food and rice n stuff like that and do push ups sit ups it WORKS

  • Good advice steve, Never had a drink and don't plan on doing it either..
