  • The piano player is Larry Goldings. He also plays Hammond on other cuts of this album. Goldings has also been James Taylor's piano player of choice since the untimely death of Don Grolnick.

  • I could have sworn this was Billie Holiday for some time now. I must choreograph a tap dance # to this..

  • wow, now I'm one of these clisché people who are all into trance, techno, house, dubstep etc. and that I still adore this song!!

  • 33 people like Britney Spears.

  • who is the piano player?

  • Is this Peggy Lee?

  • @pdxet2 NO, that one got married !!! ;) (kidding)

  • I love it!

  • Which movie are these photos for in the background?

  • From Saboteur!

  • It's great , can't find an upload for ''don't pick a fight with a poet '' though . Have to go and buy it !

  • "Dance Me To The End Of Love" nice duet /watch?v=Bs0EeSfaCiQ

  • I used to listen to this song a couple years ago.

This evening when I was saying goodbye to my girlfriend, I was putting leather gloves at the same time and was gonna give her a hug. Suddenly I remembered the lines "Touch me with your naked hand, touch me with your glove"

Damn I love this song :)

  • 1:08 why does he look like Jason Mraz lol

  • Love Leonard Cohen. Love Billie Holliday. And Madeleine Peyroux sings the songs well. But she's copying Billie Holiday's phrasing and tone so exactly that her performance amounts to impersonation. There's no originality here. She needs to develop her own style or she'll only be viewed as "that singer who can sing like Billie Holiday."

  • @jpcohen1978 I agree. "If you copy, it means you're working without any real feeling. No two people on earth are a like, and it's got to be that way in music or it isn't music." -Billie Holiday

  • Absolutely mesmeric...

  • ELIAS ASSMUTH WAS HERE.!

  • if there is someone I wish to marry with I wish he could dance to me until the end of LOVE HEHEH LOL...

  • AAA

  • she sounds heaps better than Billy.

  • DANCE ME TO THE END OF LOVE

  • this is just great :)

  • respect!

btw one of very few artists that covered this song.

  • I have such a hard time believing this song was made in 2004. I love it when artists attempt to capture that pure classic element in music and nails it , just like Miss Peyroux, here.

  • @maddywoo13 It was made in 1984, this is a cover of Leonard Cohen's song. Very different from the original but just as good.

  • Awesome. TY f.f. for posting.

  • heard this on Jazz24 and love this song

  • Lovely~

  • can anybody help me and find capella of this song?? thank you

  • I first heard this song in the saboteur and found myself getting excited when it came on the in-game radio, its such a great song.

  • @DannyCBrennan I'm going to buy that game now, just because of this song.

  • A couple of years back I was in a music store when I realized I was swaying to the music, looked around and most people were even one guy dancing in the aisle. So asked the staff what the album was and bought it.

  • awsome, would dislke jsut to like again, althou didnt, just like too mutch to dislike

  • Sem cometários a voz dessa mulher !!!

    Viva o Jaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    uuuuuuuuuuhhhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

    Perfect !

  • i love her sooooooooooo much!!!

  • An interesting mix between Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, but completely different also. Nice...

  • Wonderfullllllll !!!! d.

  • Beautiful !!!!

  • the saboteur music

  • The best !!!!!!!!!! Madeleine !!!!

  • One of the best renditions ever! Love her voice. It's just right for this song.

  • I simply love her!

  • I heard about Madeleine Peyroux years ago and how much she sounded like Billie Holiday. While it takes a keen ear to reproduce Billies distinct style and timbre (not to mention phrasing) imitation is only a jumping off point for an artist. Being a big admirer of Lady Day, I couldn't muster much interest at the time. But, she has ripened into an artist in her own right and deserves to be listened to with fresh ears.

  • Music just does not get any better than this -- in terms of the song itself, the way she sings the song, and the way the musicians accompany her.

  • My god, Billie Holiday! Wow, thats amazing <3 Shes soo chilled, i love it xxx

  • I heard this song for the first time today. I agree with those who said she sounds like Billie Holiday in some places. The piano sounded like Thelonious Monk, too. She even sounded New Orleanian with "coitans" and "tawn." This is perhaps my favorite Leonard Cohen song, and there are two wonderful versions on YouTube that anybody who likes this should also hear. But, I like this, and maybe we can make a jazz standard out of the song. Too bad Blossom and Rosie aren't around to take a shot.

  • wonderful style,classic jazz!

  • She sounds so very much like Billie Holiday.

  • @unchet Darn it people, can't you appreciate her music without saying: "It sounds like..."???!!

  • Comment removed

  • @ghostwolf9 - it sounds like Billie Holiday,so quit your bitchin'

  • @unchet yap :)

  • doesnt her voice sound like she's black?

  • I think this is because she's similar to Billie Holiday....Actually I believe Billie did not have a very "black" voice though....Anyway fantastic Billie. Very good Madeleine.

  • A songs greatness is how many renditions it can reveal and that is what they call a Standard or classic. How many of the old songs were covered by the singers of their time? Most classics are recorded literally hundreds of times! And many are better than the songwriters.(see Willie Nelson and Crazy). This is a jazzy sexy interpretation and Madeleine has a unique voice that deserves to do the classics.

  • She's got a great voice. But Leonard Cohen is the Master... Writing and singing...

  • Wonderful vocal as always, but the piano solo... 1:58 to 2:24... is truly spectacular. Melodically and rhythmically mesmerizing and masterfully understated. Bravo!

  • Stupenda!!!

  • Excellent singer and song, why do people on here have to compare anyone to anyone else, music moves on, don't live in the past, I'd rather listen to this than an x-factor wannabe with no talent.

  • Muito bom, gostos, chamosa, tudo isso é essa música. O pensamento voa!!

  • Dance Me To The End Of Love. Genial, me encanta.

  • she ain`t Cohen..but she `s excellent !

  • a really nice change of tempo

  • loooove the song and her voice!

  • Great job, Madeleine!

  • A favorite cover of this Cohen song. Just once I wish I coulda been Ginger with Fred.

  • @JHDJLAW Just once I wish I could have been Fred, with Ginger. But, hey, nowadays the lady lawyers rock! :-) all smiles ^._.^

  • i have always known this as Billie Holiday not Peyroux, Anyone know which is the truth? p.s. i heard this version at least five years ago.

  • @raindog0027 this is by Peyroux. There are similarities of styles to Billie Holiday, but the record quality and accompaniment style should hint this made very recently (i.e. post 1990).

  • @raindog0027 Billie Holiday was dead and gone when this was written by Leonard Cohen. Peyroux's voice is similar, for sure, but not identical to Lady Day's.

  • Действительно, ее красивая песня

  • which period is this song?

  • Mr. Cohen thank you for this song!

  • Cohen's just annoying with his monotone growl

This is a jazz song... she's like a girl chet baker

  • @busessuck1 nah, she's just billie holiday. no two ways about it lol

  • love it!!!

  • i love Madeleine Peyroux, her voice reminds me of billy holiday

  • awesome!

  • Sounds a lot like Billie Holliday

  • What would you say kind of genre this female singer sings?

  • @Gorgeousxsong Is deliciously awesome a genre?

  • @Jimmyblonde1979 I would say so myself. :) I love this type of music.

  • smooth jazz?

  • @Gorgeousxsong Standards.

  • Probably my favorite of her songs....

  • She reminds me of Billie Holiday.

  • Der Saboteur ist hier!

  • Outstanding.

The song, the way sings, she herself.

  • I meant "the way SHE sings".

  • loved this on nip / tuck

  • Damn, I love this song! I happened to hear it while I was shopping. I went straight to my computer to find out more about this song. It's beautifully done!!

    -jenn <3

  • great voice, more soulful - less germanic - than diana krall

  • @busessuck1 Diana is a great singer

Madeleine is a cathedral to walk in

    hand in hand

    with the one you love

  • super

  • with all due respect, though technically it is a fantastic work, it sounds dis-attached from what inspired the writing of this song. A band that was playing at the Nazi concentration camps, while people were marched to gas chambers...

proper disclosure - I am a huge fan of Leonard Cohen, a Jew, and a grandson of holocaust survivors.

  • @karlitotito with my deepest respect to your background and history - i believe music proofs to be unique and touching, if it survives time and also inspires present artists and listeners. of course, it's necessary to remember the past (especially in this case), but this is not possible without getting new aspects in it and to keep it alive ;)

  • @rauposom good note, taken

  • Michael Buble saw this

  • anybody remeber who performed this song in Crow OST?

  • great version of a great song!

  • Cohen said the song was about war but Peyroux makes it sound a lot more literal. Her intonation is... uh... i can't find the right words.

  • drunk irish man sent me here

  • she must have been reincarnated by b. holiday..it seems that's all i have read in this comment section..i respect you all...she has that same vocal cord as b. holiday..can't change that...i love her c.d.'s

  • Hey zackyko - I totally agree with the Billie Holiday "reincarnation". Just by listening to this song, I almost swear it's Billie singing through this woman. She's awesome!

  • Fabulosa!

  • I had the pleasure of seeing Madeleine in Liverpool in April (or May, I cant remember, I did a lot of drinking in England haha)

  • Go for it Ms Peyroux....

Your latest CD Bare Bones is awesome.

Seldom does one hear quality and sincerity combined as MP does it.....

  • Eine wunderschöne Interpretation des bekannten Leonard Cohen Songs.

    Einfach fantastisch!

  • I love Cohen, and I love both versions - but I think the most important thing is that the song itself exists. She does an INCREDIBLE cover of Dylan's 'You're gonna make me lonesome when you go' and it kicks the original right in the crotch.

  • Loves music, hates fame. She'd never win the X-factor...

    I just depressed myself.

  • sounds like billie holiday

  • this is abso;utely fantastic! i do lihe cohen very much, but this is one of thr rare ocasions when cover is better than original.

  • it depends on a lot of different things. I agree that this one is nice, but the original version is better. At least for a European.

  • @afficionado2004 actually i am european:) i just happen to like classical jazz very much:)

  • Adorei ouvir Madeleine no CCB! Tímida, descalça e encantadora com a sua belissima voz!

  • Hace poco que la he descubierto es una delicia,cómo canta esta mujer....

  • @ERREGE44 coincido contigo, es un encanto oirla.

    Miriam

  • Much different then Leonard's version, but nonetheless quite good.

  • Bellísimo , Linda voz . :)

  • He murdered the song he wrote? Come on, now...

  • She is great and wonderful artist and her voice remenber me to Billie Holliday.

  • I'm so glade someone told me about her. She is great.

  • I hear she on TV and i searched it ^^ Im glad too, shes very good.

  • You cannot honestly compare this to the Cohen's performance. This is a wonderful but totally different version.

  • wow, she sounds JUST like Billie Holliday.

  • Love this song and her voice is so cool, smooth and sexy! I am going to buy her CD!

  • amazing

  • Wonderful song and arrangement. Puts me in the mind of Billie Holliday also!!! Oh and that piano.....

  • This is sooooooo great.

  • what a wonderful song

  • I have to disagree with you. Leonard Cohen's voice is unique but I like this version much better. Has a smooth, jazzier uptempo sound.

  • Love this song!!

  • Yes, but Leonard Cohen takes this song to perfection, his voice is unique.

  • and cohen knows what he s talking about...it s not a love song in his mind.

  • 'But, it is the same language that we use for surrender to the beloved, so that the song -- it's not important that anybody knows the genesis of it, because if the language comes from that passionate resource, it will be able to embrace all passionate activity.'

    ~ Leonard Cohen

  • I like her voice, but this comes nowhere near the intensity of Leonard Cohen performing this song.

It is based on jewish suffering in the death camps and does not really work in a jazzy up-tempo version IMHO.

  • There's much of Billie Holiday here, love it! And this song...Leonard Cohen AHHH!

  • This song is an a cd "Women of Jazz". The whole cd is this good.

  • good job!

  • its billie hoilday reincarnation.

  • When I first heard her on the radio, I thought it was Billie Holliday...

  • she has a similar style yh but they r both fab singers. x

  • not stop playing this version.... love it

  • love this music - and this song especially the piano.....

  • The film is "Lucky You", clearly depicted at the beginning of the song.

    Are you a silly person?!!

  • what movie are those snaps from?

  • A most beautiful song by Cohen and Madeleine does a brilliant rendition

  • Our culture is so insane, we prefer watching people acting, pretending to be in love..it's madness

  • I barely know her work, but taking this song as reference, i'd say she can't just be "compared" to Billie Holyday. Her voice, yes, but more than that, sometimes she sings in a way only Ella Fitzgerald could sing. Nobody can measure up to Ella, but Madeleine gets as close as it's possible. Nowadays, she's second to none.

  • Superb rendition of a beautiful Leonard Cohen composition. Ideal dark, smoky bar song, too.

  • beautiful

  • I love her music! Well I am a big fan of the late Billie Holiday.

  • I really dont understand the lyrics bcus im ESL but she sounds GREAT !!! actually best english song i've ever heard.

  • miiiiii quanto è brava, voce molto suadente, il pezzo poi è fantastico anche perchè me lo ha fatto conoscere una mia cara AMICA

    Bravissima veramente

  • she's very good!

Mr. Cohen should be proud of her ....she didn't ruine the song ....this is what I think

  • The music is pretty cool, if it just had some matching words. The singer obviously is way too shallow to feel the intensity of Cohen's words, which match perfectly with HIS music.

  • The singer Madeleine Peyroux has been compared to that of Billie Holiday!

  • Yeah, I know she's been compared to Billie Holiday. That obviously doesn't keep her from being emotionally shallow.

  • Being emotionally shallow? Please dont discount Madeleine Peyroux !

  • Comment removed

  • Well, you are partially right. Cohen performs his songs better than anyone else. He has a very specific singing style, and he is known for it. He sung this song his way, and Madeleine Peyroux did the same. to you it might sound emotionally shallow, because its so incredibly deep and at the same time you need to be very very into it to notice it

  • Beautiful sildeshow!

  • Will someone give me a link for "lonesome when you go"? Cant seem to find it.

  • check out a video called "sometime" or "sometimes" - it's got about 300 views so far, which should help you distinguish it

  • Thanks, will do. And happy St. George's day.

  • Quel charme ds la voix de Madeleine...Beaucoup de sensibilité !(Sans nul doute LA nouvelle Billie ...)

  • may i thank here a very dear friend who sent me this beautiful song together with 3 other songs of madeleine peyroux, so thank you to you dear parisa.

    TAKE GREAT CARE

    hou

  • wundervoll

  • Wonderful version, and sweet voice of Madeleine Peyroux.

    I love her singing!

  • Madeleine, my love! That's for early Autumn evenings. Thanks a lot for posting this beautiful song.

    Bruno

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I had never heard of her before. I am hooked.

  • Nie "wyobrażałam" sobie kobiecej interpretacji "Dance Me..." :-)

    Teraz wiem, że to możliwe!

    Mało, to wykonanie jest FASCYNUJACE!

....może dlatego, że jest całkiem inne....
