The piano player is Larry Goldings. He also plays Hammond on other cuts of this album. Goldings has also been James Taylor's piano player of choice since the untimely death of Don Grolnick.
This evening when I was saying goodbye to my girlfriend, I was putting leather gloves at the same time and was gonna give her a hug. Suddenly I remembered the lines "Touch me with your naked hand, touch me with your glove"
Love Leonard Cohen. Love Billie Holliday. And Madeleine Peyroux sings the songs well. But she's copying Billie Holiday's phrasing and tone so exactly that her performance amounts to impersonation. There's no originality here. She needs to develop her own style or she'll only be viewed as "that singer who can sing like Billie Holiday."
@jpcohen1978 I agree. "If you copy, it means you're working without any real feeling. No two people on earth are a like, and it's got to be that way in music or it isn't music." -Billie Holiday
I have such a hard time believing this song was made in 2004. I love it when artists attempt to capture that pure classic element in music and nails it , just like Miss Peyroux, here.
Hey, I’m a young artist, & I would really appreciate it if everyone would check out my cover of Michael Bublé’s “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You.” Although I’m knowledgeable that Michael Bublé was not the first to record the song, my version was inspired by his rendition, nonetheless. I promise you that you will not regret giving my version of the song a listen, & it will truly knock you off of your feet! So please listen & enjoy! Thanks!
A couple of years back I was in a music store when I realized I was swaying to the music, looked around and most people were even one guy dancing in the aisle. So asked the staff what the album was and bought it.
I heard about Madeleine Peyroux years ago and how much she sounded like Billie Holiday. While it takes a keen ear to reproduce Billies distinct style and timbre (not to mention phrasing) imitation is only a jumping off point for an artist. Being a big admirer of Lady Day, I couldn't muster much interest at the time. But, she has ripened into an artist in her own right and deserves to be listened to with fresh ears.
I heard this song for the first time today. I agree with those who said she sounds like Billie Holiday in some places. The piano sounded like Thelonious Monk, too. She even sounded New Orleanian with "coitans" and "tawn." This is perhaps my favorite Leonard Cohen song, and there are two wonderful versions on YouTube that anybody who likes this should also hear. But, I like this, and maybe we can make a jazz standard out of the song. Too bad Blossom and Rosie aren't around to take a shot.
I think this is because she's similar to Billie Holiday....Actually I believe Billie did not have a very "black" voice though....Anyway fantastic Billie. Very good Madeleine.
A songs greatness is how many renditions it can reveal and that is what they call a Standard or classic. How many of the old songs were covered by the singers of their time? Most classics are recorded literally hundreds of times! And many are better than the songwriters.(see Willie Nelson and Crazy). This is a jazzy sexy interpretation and Madeleine has a unique voice that deserves to do the classics.
Wonderful vocal as always, but the piano solo... 1:58 to 2:24... is truly spectacular. Melodically and rhythmically mesmerizing and masterfully understated. Bravo!
Excellent singer and song, why do people on here have to compare anyone to anyone else, music moves on, don't live in the past, I'd rather listen to this than an x-factor wannabe with no talent.
@raindog0027 this is by Peyroux. There are similarities of styles to Billie Holiday, but the record quality and accompaniment style should hint this made very recently (i.e. post 1990).
@raindog0027 Billie Holiday was dead and gone when this was written by Leonard Cohen. Peyroux's voice is similar, for sure, but not identical to Lady Day's.
Damn, I love this song! I happened to hear it while I was shopping. I went straight to my computer to find out more about this song. It's beautifully done!!
with all due respect, though technically it is a fantastic work, it sounds dis-attached from what inspired the writing of this song. A band that was playing at the Nazi concentration camps, while people were marched to gas chambers...
proper disclosure - I am a huge fan of Leonard Cohen, a Jew, and a grandson of holocaust survivors.
@karlitotito with my deepest respect to your background and history - i believe music proofs to be unique and touching, if it survives time and also inspires present artists and listeners. of course, it's necessary to remember the past (especially in this case), but this is not possible without getting new aspects in it and to keep it alive ;)
she must have been reincarnated by b. holiday..it seems that's all i have read in this comment section..i respect you all...she has that same vocal cord as b. holiday..can't change that...i love her c.d.'s
Hey zackyko - I totally agree with the Billie Holiday "reincarnation". Just by listening to this song, I almost swear it's Billie singing through this woman. She's awesome!
I love Cohen, and I love both versions - but I think the most important thing is that the song itself exists. She does an INCREDIBLE cover of Dylan's 'You're gonna make me lonesome when you go' and it kicks the original right in the crotch.
'But, it is the same language that we use for surrender to the beloved, so that the song -- it's not important that anybody knows the genesis of it, because if the language comes from that passionate resource, it will be able to embrace all passionate activity.'
