I have just become familiar with the remarkable DOI CHAANG coffee from Thailand (thank you Robert) which is not only top quality but pays the people twice Fairtrade prices and gave the Akha people 50% of the Canadian company..P.Pachecos, Calgary Alberta
The King of Thailand presented the hilltribes with agricultural alternatives to opium growing, including coffee plants. One indigenous tribe known as the Akha was the beneficiary of this scheme. A Canadian chose to back the Akha people 100% in this venture. Thanks to to his generosity in giving the growers a 50% share in the Canadian company, 'Fair Trade' has since evolved into 'Beyond Fair Trade'--a noteworthy business model to emulate in terms of sustainability and sound ethics-P. Pachecos
Barista= an overglorified coffee pouring person. Places like starbucks issue these titles to employees so they can feel special.
Subway uses the same technique except they call them "sandwich artists" ....its a way to make the employee who is making little above minimum wage (maybe $11 if lucky) make them feel better about being a loser.Just a corporate way of trying to keep an employee

it's ok if you wanna learn how to make cappuccino but please...pleeaseee dont' tranform it in a different thing after...just as you already did with pizza and "spaghetti bolognese" which it doesn't exist in Italy. Respect our original food otherwise you should call it with another name. Anyway in Italy it's sufficient few time to learn to make cappuccino and who learns it is also paid for the working
Btw it' s good to add a few chocolate upon the foam.
@agenthelios1 oh dear you are moving me...maybe you dont' know howmuch italy are suffering righ now we are living one of the most bad period after the 2ww. Italians are not happy anymore inside the heart even if we are continuing to smile outside. But we are really upset. Ask your italian family and for sure they will explaing you..
bye little my friend and God Bless you...if you believe please pray for us italians.
@agenthelios1 yes our cuisine is simple and less fat than yours. So also cappuccino is different than starbacks. Anyway I am glad our cappuccino will go on to live in another country.
youve got coffee decorating skillz! why dont you reward yourself by buying a new coffee machine? you can get one at strongvend's website. its strongvend and a co and a dot and a uk
As a senior Waiting Staff, and Qualified Barista, I would advise seeking Distance learning courses in Management. Hospitality is an extremely stressful environment, and I have been doing it for years, and I still learn new things every day.
@matero30 Wanting to do anything in the shortest amount of time is only setting yourself up for mediocrity. I work on my art at home and also want to become a barista but know it won't happen overnight. It takes years. There's a great class at Intelligentsia for $200. Also, just go watch good baristas. Abreco, Everyman Espresso, Gorilla, Gimme, Southside and 9th St Coffee and just a few places to start also check out the coffeegeek and home-barista websites. Moving for school is a big step.
@fodera6 I can imagine that for an idiot it might take years to learn how to make coffee. However I'm sure the average person could learn the basics in perhaps two weeks of on the job practice, at the very most. The only difficult part appears to be learning how to pour properly to create the various designs and since you want to be making the drinks quickly i would imagine that simplicity is key. Learn the basic technique and stick with it would be my plan for success.
@angrymnky yes to learn the basics it does take a few weeks. But to actually understand the subtle differences between diff beans, knowing the machine and getting your grind and tamp right to get the perfect espresso. There are so many variables. and then to be able to make coffee's quickly but with finesse and consistency takes a lot of practice. But to be a good barista it really starts with the passion and love of good coffee.

@milly8389 I agree with your comment. Starbucks has already turned what was supposed to be "coffee" into another FAT calorie laden Amercan past time.

I need to become the BEST barista and cafe manager in the shortest amount of time. I am passionate and devoted, but have only worked at home.
What is my best course of action? This school looks good, but I live in New York City. There is also a school in MI that looks interesting.
What do you all advise?
