I think you'll find that Western Europe defaulted on the loans the US granted them after World War II.

But one country took it upon it's silly self to pay it all off.

My country is 'That' country, Great Britain... Fact ;)

We have only just finished paying it back, I believe within the last two years.

No wonder Germany, France etc are so much better off than we are, Not to mention that we or the US take it upon ourselves to try to keep the world as peaceful as we can to allow international trade.
