  • The only men I need in my life are my dad and my older brothers!! Also, I'm a lesbian, so I definitely don't need a man!

  • The Yeti =]

  • watching in 2012 <3

  • John's puff >>>>> Edward's puff

  • The only redeeming qualities to "Twilight" is the concept that true love will win out. In my opinion anyway. There are just so many things wrong with that book. The idea that females need a male to complete them. The necrophilia and beastiality. Her relationship with Jacob Black (true she told him she only loved Edward but her actions said the exact opposite). I just cannot wrap my mind around it really.

    HARRY POTTER FTW!

  • this had a very different vibe to nerimon reads twilight

  • 17 year old girl, actually....

  • don't worry, john, your puff is super sexier...plus it's made of awesome

  • DAT BEARD!!!!

  • I prefer John's puff to Edward's puff.

  • hmmm. an interesting viewpoint on twilight. it doesn't seem quite as bad in that light.

  • I like them both, but if i had to choose one it would be HARRY POTTER!

  • I have read all 4 books in the series and I have to say that I loved them (I'm a guy) The movies are pretty bad though. If you wanna talk smack about the series PLEASE read one of the books because in this case like most things "The book is better than the movie"

  • I threw up a little on the inside

  • This is only the second video of him i've watched ... why does he call 'us' (or not?) "Hank"? Thanks in advance! :))

  • @saliri20 Hank is his brother but he wasnt talking to hank in this video, you will see at the end of hanks videos he will say "john" : )

  • @saliri20 The vlogbrothers channel was initially established for John Green and his brother Hank to keep in touch with each other through video since they were living in different states, thus they talk as though speaking to each other instead of the audience.

  • Augustus Waters kicks Edward Cullen out of the...um...water

  • @blondebunhead I totally agree!

  • HOLY SHIT I WANT JOHN'S BEARD.

  • John, please stop telling our wonderful nerdfighter guys to be like Edward Cullen. I like nerdy guys but if a guy comes up to me tells me I can't hang out with my friends anymore, is resisting the urge to brutally murder me and climbs in my window at night and watches me sleep without my knowledge, I'm going to call the cops, not kiss him. However if a guy comes up to me and tells me he likes Harry potter I might stick around.

  • John, if it makes you feel any better...Augustus Waters is a bigger dreamboat than Edward Cullen could ever be. <3

  • @JustCallMe253 I entirely agree

  • i have a dream. a dream in which Harry Potter jumps out of the bath tub on isle esme and avada vedavras (i just made avada kedavra a verb. i read the series 154 times i have a right) both edward and bell . but bella first as revenge for what that blood sucking a** pi times radius squared minus area did to her in the second book

    \

  • I miss that intro song!

  • And one would hope that none of us girls really have a pressing need for someone who will jump in front of a car to save us because we were too angsty to look both ways before crossing the street.

  • Also, I do not like sparkly pretty-boys with puffy hair. Especially if they're going to outlive me by several millennia and only love me for my blood type.

  • OK, so he's 107 (about as old as my house...) so he's from about 1904 (Oh, wait, exactly as old as my house)...erm, ick.

  • Comment removed

  • 42 guys? please tell me I'm not the only one who noticed....42? anybody?

  • OMG HE MENTIONED THAT "V" THAT GIRLS LOVE TALKING ABOUT SO MUCH

I remember my friend and I used to be like, "And then he took his shirt off and--" (insert V-shaped hand gesture) LOL

  • Oh my gosh, I miss this intro.

  • This is the kind of video that scares away 90% of none-veteran male nerdfighters XD

Instant response: "He said Twilight" (...sad...gay.. etc.) "Hank I will punish you" (WTF)

  • I'd forego the sparkles for the smarts.....

  • I love Sarah, she's so adorably mean.

  • J-j-j-j-jJOHN YOU HAVE A BEARD!!!! Ok future note John in about three years , YOU WILL NOT HAVE A BEARD!!!!

  • I used to like Twilight. But then I read Looking For Alaska.

  • @katherine9997

    I used to read Twilight.

Then I took a real book to the brain.

  • Now I REALLY think Edward is hot. He has super sexy poof. Fml

  • oh my god the beard startled me so badly....

  • The first Twilight book was BORING AS HELL, so after the first 6 chapters or so, I just skipped forward to the last three books.

  • Proud to say that in gr.7 i wrote an essay about how Twilight is teaching our youth all the wrong morals and the negative effects of the twilight saga on our generation. Of course I also pointed out the literary flaws in the story as well as the scientific flaws. needless to say I got 100%

  • “True love will triumph in the end, which may or may not be true, but if it’s a lie it’s the most beautiful lie we have.”

  • John please don't grow a beard.

  • I don't like Twilight because it's very boring. People say "it may be badly written, but at least it's a good story" and I'm just sitting there there like, "um... not really." There's just so much pointless detail. The book could've been half as long as it is. Each one took me a month to read, and I'm usually a very fast reader.

  • I agree that Edward being 91 years older than Bella is really strange and just because he looks like he is 17 doesn't mean he still isn't an old man. But I noticed you never mentioned how incredibly creepy it is that he sneaks into her room and watches her while she sleeps without her knowledge. . . That is just . . .

  • @jellybell151 Yep, that's the thing that gets me too... I mean, my boyfriend can be a little obsessive over me at times (well, he was at first) but he never watched me while I was unaware of it. Or attempted to enter my house without my express permission.

  • and edward sucks jacob is hott =)

  • I freaking hate twilight

  • In France, primary and secondary schools are named after major writers or artists or freedom fighters. I did not know that so many people still loved Camus' works.

  • im not one of those twilight haters, but it kinda sucks, the story is a cliche, the characters are poor, shallow and idealized, you can tell its suposed to absorb you no matter what and its a little bit sexist (maybe just slightly), i agree with the top comment, HP is awesome and all, but people should be reading something more valuable, like hemingway, poe, camus, garcia marquez, wilde, orwell, huxley etc...

i could go on for like another 5 comments but, really, just pick one of those.

  • Um...did he just say, "...Nerdfighteria....all FORTY-TWO of you."? Like, 42?! There was a time when NERDFIGHTERIA DID NOT EXIST?? :O

  • @StudentCommunity he was addressing the boys of nerdfighteria, and acknowledging the fact that most of his viewers are girls.

  • @ThisFutureAuthor Oh, thanks. :P LOL.

  • @StudentCommunity you're welcome.

  • The fact that John's voice cracks when he's making the "strong man to feel whole" joke (on "bench press" no less) makes it all the more glorious.

  • "Obviously not!" BURN. John are you just gonna take that? Go bench press her.

  • Whoa hey beard lover.

  • there should be a t-shirt with john green on it that says "super sexy puff" on it

  • As a persuasive paper in English my friend wrote about the disturbing relationship in Twilight.....She got an A

  • I asked my guitar tutor if he needed a man who could bench-press his body weight in order to feel whole. He said, "Absolutely, don't you?"

    I love my guitar lessons.

  • YOUR FACE? WHAT IS GOING ON?

  • @BreChristie I thought the same thing...then i saw it was made in November...No shave November.

  • Something that infuriates me about Twilight is book vs movie. Generally the book is always better, obviously. But there is a difference between leaving out some details vs leaving out a very important key point from the book. The book is somewhat fascinating in the sense that it discusses human sexual maturity. While Bella is a hormonal teenage girl who on top of loving Edward, also can't wait to get into his pants. Edward is a chivalrous man who wants to make love, with his future wife.

  • 43

  • Finally! An intelligent person that can appreciate Twilight! I feel better about myself now!

  • So glad someone else is wierded out by the Edward-Bella romance. One's self should not be so completely defined by another. If you leave someone for his or her own good, you don't come back into his or her life to feel better yourself. If your brother is about to kill himself you don't go get his ex-girlfriend to save his life either. Major logic problems I have with the series.

  • sometimes if i get used to watching clean-shaven john's videos i am really surprised when i see fuzzy-face john.

  • finally someone who understands that harry potter and twilight are about completely different things!

  • I turned up volume to try to hear what the Yeti was saying, but instead my entire floor ended up hearing "DO YOU NEED A MAN WHO CAN BENCHPRESS YOUR BODY WEIGHT IN ORDER TO FEEL WHOLE?"

  • @seamusdoesthings she said obviously not :)

  • @sabmy Mate... I was being sarcastic... -_- I'm not just attracted to Kristen. That would be stupid and my girlfriend would probably go ape-shit at me.

  • Bella is 17... no?

  • Oh well. DFTBA.

  • Crap. Someone else already said that.

  • No, just no.

  • FINALLY. I have been freaked out by Edward's age since I knew about it but I haven't found anyone else who is as weirded out about it. Thank you! :D

  • He loves the Yeti so much - you can just tell.

  • Your puff's even more super-sexy.

  • I'm asking all fellow nerdfighter's to help out another. My name is Devin St.Clare and i have recently started making youtube video's. My videos deal with book reviews and just random things that have been on my mind. I am humbling myself and asking friends and family to help spread my channel because i believe i can make a difference, just like the Greens do for me every video. I'm asking from the bottom of my heart for you guys to click on my name and give me a chance. DFTBA- St. Clare

  • John I disagree. (I removed my apology at the beginning because after all I'm just giving my opinion *smiles*)

  • no, just no

  • Twilight film series sucks man..

  • Thumbs up for John's voice cracking while talking about how manly he is(n't) to the Yeti.

  • What if Bella had been lesbian?

  • @miekka968 That would have been an amazing movie. Kristen Stewart is the reason i'm a lesbian.

  • @TheCrookedTeeth if thats true, you are not a lesbian. You can’t be a lesbian because of one person, otherwise you would never date anyone else, you would only want Kristen Stewart.

  • I've got no interest in reading the books, but I think that's more about writing quality and my lack of interest in vampires in general, not sparkly ones in particular. But I also agree that comparing Twilight and Harry Potter is a little bit misguised, we should be comparing Harry Potter and the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. (YOUNG WIZARDS FTW, OKAY? DD IS AWESOME.)

  • actually you didnt enfuriate everyone, i quite agree with your review. they're entertaining but surely not works of art. people just take it all too seriously. enjoy them for what they're worth, and if you dont enjoy them at all well, thats okay too.

  • also, like, shakespeare.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, but see, love is the everchanging spectrum of a lie.

Anyone? Anyone? Joy Formidable references? No? Okay.

  • "obviously not" what a loving wife ^^ I like the yeti

  • At first I wasn't looking and being a new nerdfighter I haven't seen many videos, lets just say when I looked up at my screen and saw the beard I yelped in surprise and followed it with the words "what's on his face"

  • *scream* FINALLY. being a potterhead and subjected to this everyday and yes i read the twlight series and i enjoyed it but it was complete and utter fiction and john thank you so much you have said eveything i wanted to say

  • BEARDSLAM

  • I would like to argue that since Edward's mind is frozen as a 17-year-old, his brain is as equally as formed as one. It's kind of like comparing a 30-year-old mentally retarded man with a six-year-old. He's technically older but their mental capacities are the same. I don't like Twilight for a variety of reasons and I don't think the books portray a healthy, loving relationship but rather an unhealthy, almost abusive obsession. I'm making that argument because I love Vampire Diaries :)

  • ...I screamed when I first saw John in the video xD

  • 1:40 D'awwww John's voice cracked. =]

  • Im a dude, I've read the books..

I can honestly say they are absolutely fucking terrible, but I still like them..

The fantasy side of the books is brilliant, but bella is by far the worst protagonist in any series I've read..

I love the werewolves, and I also love the history of the vampires..

    Edward had influenza..

    Carlisle's loneliness..

    Jaspers war..

    Alice's mystery..

But the main story itself, sucked..

  • "It argues that true love will triumph in the end.

Which may or may not be true, but if it is a lie- it is the most beautiful lie we have"

    Awwww John :')

  • I have read the twilight books, they are insanely addictive, whilst being completely terrible at the same time, i wanted to punch bella at every opportunity yet could not stop reading, i felt kinda possessed

  • @lucy2005rules very accurate. I felt the same...

  • @lucy2005rules

I know right!!! Every minute I was shouting at Bella to stop being so needy!

But in my opinion the movies were so horribly cast *Kristen Stewart* *cough cough* that they make the books seem even shittier than they are!

p.s. I couldn't stp myself from buying the whole series and the Second life of Bree Tanner :(

  • @lucy2005rules The total lack of any surprising/sub plot make it easy to read, you don't have to think about it, while it can still take your mind of the world suck. I have the same problem, this is the only explanation I could get, have you got a better one?

  • John has lost some weight in comparison to this. Yay John!

  • BEARD!! YOU ARE SO BEARDY!

  • Thaaaaank you! I'm glad someone finally admitted publicly that they couldn't stop reading while they questioned their sanity for the previous fact.

  • somme one made a parody book of twilight. it's called nightlight. and trust me It's waaaaaaaay better than twilight

  • guess what. Im a girl. and i hate twilight. some faith in humanity has been restored

  • the Puff is the only sexy part though

  • Not trying to defend Twilight or anything or deny that it is poorly written, but some Harry Potter fans make the Twilight seems better by bashing the book all the time. I don't go around the internet and see any Twilight fans completely bash J.K. or the series.

We can be kind of immature.

  • @AccioChocobo make the Twilight fans seem better. Ugh.

  • I love twilight but when I was reading New Moon I constantly wanted to slap Bella in the face.

  • Ooooooh god my head hurts even worse after laughing so much about "obviously not" and my heart hurts as well because I'm sooooo, soooo, sooooo jealous of youuuuu!

  • I read the first book of Twilight, and I found it hilarious. I'm surprised Meyer has an English degree, because she re-uses the same verbs, and her grammar is MADLY wrong.

  • So her name is Sarah....and now if we could just see her face, John. his has been troubling me for MANY suns and moons. Let me see her face!

  • shes 17 not 16 :P

  • It's crazy how much I agree with this video.

  • Twilight or Harry Potter? my answer... The Earthsea Cycle.

  • But I don't wont my man to look 17 and sparkle....

  • For me, the question just isn't "Twilight or Harry Potter?".

It's more a string of questions: "Why aren't we reading more Dostoevsky and Camus?" - "Are we letting what is modern commonly become a factor of perceived quality?" - "Why don't more English classes study some of the few works of infinite brilliance that managed to retain high accessibility, like The Picture of Dorian Gray, or Cat's Cradle?"

  • @alessan We do. We are studying The Town, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and as of right now, Cat's Cradle.

  • @Aeropop11 Good to know. :]

  • @alessan

I'm 16 and we're reading those in high school (Oscar Wilde, James Joyce etc..) ^_^ we're actually deconstructing Ulysses

I prefer to read these than Twilight it's much more interesting than a cheesy cliche teen romance

Example of a conversation about Twilight:

EDWARD IS SOOOOOO HAAAWWWTTT <3<3<3<3 luvluvluvluvluv edward culleennnn i'm MRS. CULLLENNN.... CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT???? WTF IS THAT!?

  • super sexy puff

  • I think people throw hate at the Twilight series because they think it makes them cool. There's a stigma associated with the Twilight series that implies that if you're a fan you're also a stupid, teenage girl. It seriously bugs me. I think you should be allowed to like what you want without being judged for it.

  • THIS MADE MY LIFE

  • I was embarrassed to be seen walking out of new moon. When Jakob took off his baby-t to staunch the blood flow of Bella's tiny cut I stopped taking any of it seriously.

  • No, that is not what girls want you to be....although a big sexy puff is def a plus :P

  • Edward = Pedophile

  • i dont get why girls like edward hes so mean to EVERYONE

  • no, we just want super sexy puff. (and those of us who appreciate the puff do not need a man to bench press our weight to feel whole.) haha

  • @fuzzypinkdice there is nothing

  • what attacked john's right wrist? 1:47

  • Okay, so if a vampire had a baby, and the baby is a vampire, and vampires never age....would the baby be a baby forever????

  • @georgeordraco this too is addressed in the books. The baby is born a genius (duh) and ages super quickly until she is at her physical prime (of course, vampires can't be too young or old to make out), at which point she will no doubt commence to have hot sex with other supernatural creatures. Because vampires can do this, no matter their actual age.

  • I think it's cool how this video is more then 2 years old, with newer vlogbrothers videos coming out all the time, yet people are still commenting on it. I think that says something about these videos... can't quite figure out what though.

  • I have a burning hate for twilight. especially because people in my school try to tell me its better than harry potter. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO SOCIETY? *sobs*

  • @MissJuniorMinty Hey, while interests change, literature does not. Hopefully they read and not watch the horribly inadequate movies. And John is right, there is something to be said for a book that, while is a horrible representation of a modern relationship, can be used to assuage boredom and make you feel good. Which is what reading should be!

  • "And that's not because she's a big girl, either."

    lawwwlz. xD

  • I agree John, the world needs more Shakespeare.

  • I prefer your puff, John.

  • "and boy does her blood smell good"

    thats just perfect

  • I started hyperventilating when he used Twilight and Harry Potter in the same sentence. Seriously, my eyes went huge.

  • He shoulda kept the beard. :P Dftba!

  • How may times you've been around the sun. LOL.

  • "SUPER SEXY PUFF" fell off my chair laughing!!!!!! Hahahahahhhh

  • Such a funny video! "Jacob Black is insanely v-shaped" hahaha

  • when you said "i will punish you" i thought of sailor moon...

  • you know, i know that twilight offends girls, because of the whole feminist thing (i am a 14 year old girl btw) but you know somthing is too much when it offemds guys! I am not jokeing, my friend who is a guy finds it offensive that the guys in twilight are sort of male sex objects for 12 year olds to drool over and that edward and jacob seem to have no life outside of bella

  • I'm a male, and I like Twilight, but I saw this Edward Cullen doll at Target today, and I can't help but be weirded out by it.

  • @RiskyBrothers the "Eragon series" is actually called the Inheritance Cycle just throwing that out there...

  • Comment removed

  • Eragon books or Harry Potter

  • @RiskyBrothers ...is not truly an either or problem...it's more of a "which first?" problem...i think :)

    kbye :D

  • Hey, I don't really like Edward, and I don't expect the male section of the human population to be like him, but it would be nice to have men not fart.

  • @Jessicano2010 How do you know Edward doesn't fart?

  • @Jessicano2010 hmmm... I think they'd spontaneously combust if they keep it in all the time.

  • Agreed! The books were epic! The movies were a little lacking.

  • No offense but I don't get what was so captivating and escapist about this book. If anything it just reminded me of how base society has become and mtv =___=

  • I have never seen a film of twilight and today, a friend of mine and me went to an insane marathon of all 4 movies that are our so far. was kind of nice, most of the time, we had a lot of fun. even though I think John makes some valid points here!

    dftba nerdfighteria^^

  • I find it precarious of my intelligence now when every time I take a shower I mistake myself as a vampire. And yet I'm still hoping for my letter from Hogwarts to arrive. Any. Day. Now.

  • Well, the first thing I did when I saw this video was check to make sure it was posted in November.

  • I tolerate Twilight because my friends like it and it makes them happy, and that makes me happy.

  • WAY TO GO JOHN...

  • Nooooooooo john no team potter you gotta let twilight go your not a 12 year old girl anymore.

  • in my oppinion, Harry Potter's goal is to tech you that bravery and loyalty and love will triuph above evil no matter how strong evil is

Twilight's goal seems to be to teach you that human men are sexualy inadiquet

also, in harrt potter, girls are portrayed as smart and brave and equal to guys but in twilight, they are portayed as weak and inferrior to men

  • @yourworstnightmar231 Well clearly Twilight has the more relevant and valuable life lessons.

  • @skhasin how so?

  • @yourworstnightmar231 Sarcastically so.

  • @skhasin ahhhh, that makes sense :)

  • Or to be more accurate, ironically so.

  • @yourworstnightmar231 best comment ever, I always wondered why I preferred Harry Potter over Twilight

  • just kindda stupid but not bad :)
