This is probably my favorite piano-bass-drums jazz trio album. Even the standards sound incredibly unique and original. What a lineup, too. Mingus and Roach and Duke. Soooo sick.
@themusicman1973 Agree -- the interaction between the bass and piano is amazing, but to my ear, the bass is what takes this song into that unique zone. Call it the Mingusphere.
Probably Duke's greatest work! A great musician, capable of defining jazz and, at the same time, go beond the frontiers of jazz! In this record he is actually deconstructing and reinventing its own work, bringing it up-to-age and going from 30's "jungle" to 60's "money jungle", giving a new artistic & political meaning (as usual with the help of younger artists like Mingus)- instead of the easy way of resting on his laurels and spend his life exploiting his early success, like other artists do.
man, trying to tackle the real book and this bass track is gnarly. mingus is a beast

@Draples No idea, and I'd love to know. Muffled drums? Something non-Western?

OH MY GOD! Our choir performed his concerts of sacred music a couple of years ago and it was amazing. But this takes my breathe away...
