I beated all Dirt Trax FX races, back on those days.... it was so cool... but seriously, it seems like you really suck...lol... btw about Stunt Race... man if you want the game being faster..improve your skills to unlock the motorbike... is not like SVP , but at least you can see the game at his limits. (Comparing VR with SR, but using one of the slowest cars, was pretty unfair).
@BIMBOBOOP The Dirt Trax FX video was a joke, I've beaten the game. As for Stunt Race, it's not the speed of the car that I was illustrating, it's the frame rate. Two completely different things. Even the fastest vehicle in the game runs at a very poor FPS.
@kainkusanagi I was also joking about the Dirt Trax Video.. is just that you are really good actor, lol...about the frame rate... thats totally true!! But it would be more accurate if you showed that frame rate characteristic with the faster car get to point clearly, dont you think?
@BIMBOBOOP You could be right. The faster cars couples with the poor frame rate make the game even harder to deal with. When I was a kid it didn't seem bad, but now I can't stand such a low FPS.
@kainkusanagi Yeah I remember that i haved a hell of fun beating all the levels on Stunt Race FX, even more the harder ones. The same was for Dirt Trax. You know, at euope they got one more FX racing game, but i cant remember the game. I wonder how fast could be playing it on a real console, since everybody knows that pal games are pretty much fps slower. In fact o have another one, but about winter olimpics, but i never was able to play it :(
@Tiztu Speed and frame rate are two different things. You can have a slow moving game with a high frame rate. The frame rate is the number of frame the hardware draws to the screen per second. Slow frame rates or inconsistent frame rates cause choppy gameplay. The reason an emulator makes it too fast is because it increases the frame rate to a nice smooth consistent 30 or 60 fps. It makes the game run smooth, but the as a result the game is like in fast forward mode.
@kainkusanagi but it's the only game i have played on zsnes that is sped up, the other ones apparently did not need as much processing speed as starfox and so they all run at the same pace as in the actual videogame
virtua racing seems to be way more fun & faster then stunt race fx cuzz stunt race fx dit run sluggish and slooow.
the svp chip is abit more powerfull then the super fx2 chip, but likely there was another chip for the snes but it was NOT from nintendo,it was the st0018 nec 810 wich was a 21mhz 32bit proccesor, sadly it was used in only 1 snes game, hayazashi nidan morita ghousy2.
now just imagine if snes doom was based on that powerfull 32bit chip, sure it would,ve beat the 32x version of doom!!
I always thought the SNES was a huge step up. In sound and color for sure. Any game that was released for both consoles usually never looked the same. The Genesis version always had a muted color pallet and lower quality sound. Not hating on the Genesis, but it just usually fell short on games released on multiple consoles. Not always though, MK 1 and Beavis & Butthead were better on Genesis lol
@AdamTheGood The SNES had better graphics and sound chips, but the Genesis had a better CPU. Most games that were better on SNES were developed first on SNES and then quickly ported to the Genesis so they couldn't take full advantage of the Genesis' hardware. Much like games developed first on Xbox 360 and then quickly ported to the PS3 like Bayonetta.
@nooblet911 I enjoyed it when I was a kid, before I'd even heard of the words "frame rate" and the fact that it was 3D was good enough for me to have fun. But I wouldn't say it's underrated. Nostalgic yes, underrated no. But if you still like it, good for you. I have a hard time playing it anymore. Now Star Fox though, that's still great.
well we all have different preferences. I'm personally impressed by stunt race fx, considering it's a 1994 snes game that runs of a 1st gen super fx chip.
@nooblet911 Yeah, I was impressed back then, but it just runs so slow that it now looks like a slide show. Star Fox was a first gen FX Chip and it runs a lot better. Mario Kart and F Zero are two SNES racing games that achieve pseudo 3D effects at a good frame rate without the FX chip. Virtua Racing on the Genesis runs fine on it's first gen 3D SVP chip.
Look, I have fond memories of Stunt Race too, but other than nostalgia I don't think it has much to offer us anymore.
well, I look at all old games with a different view because obviously they aren't comparable to modern games. old 3d games especially, since they look just ancient compared to modern 3d games. I appreciate the game for what it was, not how it appears now. the best sports cars from 50 years ago are now pretty pathetic compared to the best modern sports cars, but that doesn't make them any less classic.
@nooblet911 The game is borderline unplayable. It was borderline unplayable back in the 90's, but we didn't know any better back then. It's not about its simplistic graphics or sound fx that may look and sound dated now. Lots of games are dated, but like you say are as much fun as they were a years ago. The reason I feel StuntRace FX has little value outside of nostalgia is it's frame rate is so poor and erratic that I look back at my younger self and wonder how I enjoyed it in the first place.
you already said that and I can't comment how the game runs on the actual snes because I don't have the original game, but on the emulator I can look past the slow framerate and clunky controls and respect the game for what it is.
@nooblet911 You'd really have to play the game on real SNES hardware to understand how bad the frame rate it. Sometimes it's so slow that you can't drive correctly because your steering gets delayed and you end up smacking into walls or missing turns. I've played it on an emulator too and the frame rate was much improved. It was consistent, playable, and fun enough. But on the SNES it's a completely different story. Give it a try on a real SNES, I think you'll find what I'm saying is valid.
@Bakemon13 DK Country isn't 3D at all, it's purely 2D. All Rare did was use computer generated graphics to render the sprites, but int the game they are no different then any other 2D side scrolling platformer. The effect makes it look 3D, but it's the same as Super Mario or Sonic.
Sega really should have made the SVP as an adapter for other games. I guess that's sorta of what they did with the 32x though. Scratch that idea! :P
Sure the Genesis SVP chip pushed more polys, but StarFox has a lot more personality going for it. The colors are more vibrant and the music and sound effects were top notch. I used to play StarFox with headphones and was totally immersed in the action!
I am now the proud owner of a StarFox 2 cartridge (modded from a SRFX cart). It's really fun.
@videogameobsession I love Star Fox, but I don't care for Star Fox 2. I'm glad they scraped it and made Star Fox 64 instead. I prefer Star Fox to be on rails.
the 3d chip was already built in the snes thats why the games are the same size the genesis didint have the chip thats why virtua racer was so big cuz it had the chip in the game
@adbeats3 The SNES didn't have a 3D chip built into it, the Super FX Chip was an addon chip in special game cartridges. Watch part 2 to see it for yourself.
@kainkusanagi I did the games do have the fx chip but the snes had a 3d chip chip inside that the genesis didnt have which mario kart uses for a 3d effect ive seen it on the inside of the snes system
@adbeats3 It's not a 3D chip and Mario Kart is not 3D. What you're talking about is "Mode 7" which is a trick that manipulates sprites. Mario Kart doesn't have any polygons or 3D vector graphics like FX Chip games. It's true that SNES had slightly more advanced hardware that let developers do things that had to be done in software on the Genesis, but what you're talking about isn't true 3D. Look up "Mode 7" on wikipedia and you're understand what I'm talking about.
Well...I doubt someone noticed the framerate issues too much...at least till SEGA relesed it's better chip........it's the thing with the eyes,..for example..I first played Castlevania Down of Sorrow on mobile phone..not smartphone just a regular java-based one...when I got a DS and played the game on it..the framerate changed..and I forgot about the phone game.
@Seamonky72 Yeah, Screwattack still has great content. I listen to Sidescrollers every week. But the website changed so much that I don't actively participate. The user content is spammed with so much mediocre stuff that the user generated stuff worth looking at gets lost.
Oh man...if Sega had released the SVP a little earlier and had them made better use of it, making more games with it and improving the chip's capabilities they could probably had avoided the 32X failure. Oh well...anyways..nice to see a new video from you Kain. =)
@InternetLad The doom clip was exactly 25 seconds and I wanted people to get a good look because a little later in the video I show the SNES version which doesn't look nearly as good as the PC version.
It's been quite a while Kain, so I'm glad to see you finally come back! By the way, what game is that background music from? You know, the music that plays while you're on camera doing the talking...
@StrawberryGuy86 The song is called Comic Bakery from the Commodore 64 game Comic Bakery. Mediocre game but the title music is probably the most famous of all C64 chip tunes.
Only FX games I did play were,Star Fox and Stunt Race.Stunt Race was a pretty bad game. The lack of frame rate made the already clunky controls on that game go against you..Powersliding,avoiding other drivers and simply trying to get to the checkpoint was just a nightmare.Till this day I still wont go back to playing that.
@ScrewAttackEurope Not that I'm aware of. The 32X had a 32bit RISC processor. The SVP chip is a digital signal processor. It does share the same compatibility with Genesis/Mega Drive models though.
@ScrewAttackEurope Cool mod I'll have to try it out. Maybe do a video about it. Although kinda pointless for just one outdated game.
Yes it works with the CDX/Multi-Mega. The 32X works on it too, but if you want to put a CD in you have to pull the 32X off because it hangs over the CD door.
@ScrewAttackEurope Actually, no. That was just a theory. Later someone realized that the chip is actually a Samsung custom-made DSP. After analyzing VR ROM data, the Picodrive emulator developer figured it out and he wrote a full description of how the SVP works.
@Aiarashi As far as I know it doesn't. It's just a clever programming trick like Wolfenstien 3D or the first person parts of Jurassic park. The post behind me isn't from an anime, it's from one of the greatest 2D shoot'em ups around, Cotton 2. It was only released in Japan.
The SVP chip may have had the power advantage, but I still feel to this day that Stunt Race FX and Starwing are more fun to play. 16-bit VR is a bit on the boring side.
