  • Young Glenn Gould= Christian Bale <3

  • Gould's seemingly continuous gradation of the dynamics in his playing is shown well in the last piece. Also, the ways he can articulate passages and phrases within phrases really astonishes me. I'm no scholar of classical pianists but I'm sure very few have ever been on his technical level. And on the movie question, I wouldn't rule out an actor who is more interesting than any of his roles, Hugh Grant, if he could do the accent.

  • Does anyone know what Mr. Gould is playing at 2:07? I would never expect him to play something like that.

  • @4hm3dimr4n Ravel's La Valse....it's listed.....

  • @4hm3dimr4n Don't know, but I'd love one of those pianos with the very tall legs that he's playing

  • @hhelpmaboab

So I had a teacher at my college tell me that it was a piano transcription of Ravel's orchestral score: La Valse. He was playing the last section. That piano doesn't have long legs. Mr. Gould just happens to have a habit of sitting in the same chair that keeps him low.

  • What is he playing around 2:40?

  • glenn gould was a pretentious douche

  • @sciencebzzt haha yes, but a great musician.

  • Gould and Bernstein. Awesome combo!!!

  • Glenn had a wonderful speaking voice and note, he did not punctuate his speech wiht a lot of "ums" as so many people do. He may have been quirky, but in his interviews he displayed great intelligence and in his musicianship, mastery.

  • It's about time for a movie on the life of Glenn Gould. In my opinion Johnny Depp would do a great job portraying this intelligent, creative and charismatic man.

  • @avq5 Or Billy Crudup, or even Ewan Mcgregor

  • @avq5 Have you seen the film; "The Genius Within ~ The Inner Life of Glenn Gould"? It's a full length documentary that came out in '09 & played in the theaters until last year & is now out in DVD. I have seen it twice on the 'big screen' & bought the DVD as soon as it came out, & have watched it 6 or 7 times, showing it to my friends & neighbors (& 'gaining new fans' for GG, every time, I might add)! It is very well done & is a "must see" & anyone that's a 'fan' should own it (or rent it)!

  • @DesertAnnie I never knew it existed. I only recently began listening to Gould but have been fascinated by him from the start. Can't wait to get it.

    -Thanks

  • @avq5 You are in for a treat! I've been a *fan* for as long as I can remember & I still find out 'new things' about him now & then! There always seems to be a new article or a book & new photos, showing up that one has never seen before, etc. I have a huge collection of everything about him! He certainly was endlessly fascinating in every way & was truly a musical genius! I know you will enjoy the doc./ film & will, no doubt, join the ranks of his admirers from then on! ☸ڿڰۣ—— ♫♪

  • @avq5 No one can play Gould. He is way too complicated and intelligent to be truly good played by any actor.

  • What a brilliant performance to the 1st concerto! from 6:00 it gets so marvelously intense! Amazing!!!

  • @avq5 I don't know if you are aware, probably, but there is already the '32 short films about glenn gould', with Colm Feore as GG.

  • Those chords he plays from 2:25 to 2:28... what are they? And what is the piece he's playing? Unbelievable!!!

  • @smanticus It's Gould's transcription of Ravel's La Valse. The whole thing's on Youtube somewhere, it's wonderful.

  • Young Glenn Gould=Ethan Hawke.

  • @KalkunTerbang yeah!! young and old. Ha johnny depp, you gotta be kidding.

  • Simply magnificent. I can watch this over and over, and Gould is miraculous each time.

  • I was wondering who wrote the Keyboard Concerto b/c it was so good..

AND NO DOUBT, IT IS BACH

  • hes a classical thelonious monk.

  • This man is certainly an artist, yet, a genius!

  • @iggypopster2 I understand. well, I cannot be sure. I mean, I have a cousin with AS, and he is rather dumb, but memorizes almost the phonebook. not smart, but with certain skills. I'm no psychiatrist, but i think gould had rather a "schizoid personality desorder", it describes better his behavior. As far as i know, AS is related to some degree of "dumbness", besides the social clumsiness.

  • some people are thrilled entertaining the idea that gould had asperger's syndrome. that is absurd. asperger's syndrome is a cognitive disability, a mental handicap. a genius cannot be mentally handicaped. maybe that idea is entertained by the same people who think evgeny kissin is a genius. gould was a true genius, kissin is a savant retard (or at least plays the role of one to perfection)

  • @sirdelrio I'm sorry but you're sadly mistaken regarding Asperger's - it is not a mental handicap as such and certainly wouldn't have made Gould incapable of musical genius, quite the contrary in fact. Aspies are actually characterized by a HIGH IQ and usually genius qualities especially in the realm of music. I know this to be true because my husband is an Aspie and is an extremely talented and respected bass player.

  • @sirdelrio Trololo

  • @sirdelrio stupid you, stupid you...

  • @sirdelrio Im afraid you re mistaken here. though it is impossible to say that he had Asperger's, that disorder is not indicitive of an intellectual disability. quite the opposite. Most people with AS have normal intelligence and some have superiour intellectual abilty. Genius and AS are not necessarily exclusive

  • @kerpin09 no, they have a remarkable particular skill, they cannot talk fluently, they cannot interpret language but literally, have childish psychosexuality. I'd like you to give some examples of those asperger geniuses. Because i'm the one who is afraid that all those controverting my comment are relying on 'popular culture' notions about the syndrome, and not on the psychiatrical diagnostic. There are many articles, and even documentaries about aspies, should watch them.

  • @kerpin09 sorry, i didn't read your comment well. you were not arguing about that he did have asperger's, but that asperger's is not disability. and you are right.

  • @sirdelrio thanks for that.. close. What I was saying is that Asperger's is certainly a disability- just not a disability of intelligence. The deficits are in the area of understanding and employing non-verbal communication and reading social cues, as well as fixated interest in specific, sometimes unusual subjects. It can be very debilitating for those living with it. Gould seems to have had some features but, of course, he being dead for 30 years, can't be diagnosed.

  • What is this piece does anyone know? And is it on anywhere on his albums?

  • @Blacksky17 it is Bach's c minor partita.

  • @Blacksky17 keyboard concerto #1 in D minor, BWM 1052. Not a partita..

  • The like of Hendrix and Miles Davis. A one time proposition.

  • the concerto reminds me of beethoven's moonlight sonata

  • I'm a huge fan of Gould's, but man, we have to admit that his pedaling sucks ;)

  • Excellent segment: insightful, essential aspects of the man and his craft. Thanks.

  • Music!

  • The footage at or about 5:20 is really quite incredible. This is one of the things I really like about YouTube... and thank you so much for uploading this marvelous, and extraordinary, video.

  • KingMinosxxvi

    Intertextualized Wonder?

    Nonpareil drivel.

  • I loved how his body motions where in sinc with the conductors.

Glen needed 4 hands, 2 to play and 2 to conduct himself.

    This was great !!!!

  • To me he is special. I don't think there has ever been another pianist with his inate talent. It is just incredible.

  • @NemoProkofiev551 its a piano arrangement of Ravel's La Valse

  • I Love, Love, Love this man! :) If ever there was living arguement for the intertextualized wonder of living culture it is in the Art of this glorius man.

  • I Love, Love, Love this man! :)

  • Performers and composers are still synonymous in the world of jazz.

  • The last 3 minutes is the Bach 1st piano concert d minor. My favorite Gould or Bach "anything" is this piece. Incidentally, that is Leonard Bernstein conducting the NY Philharmonic, sometime in the middle 50s. Glenn was about 24-25. The complete version with other orchestras are also on youtube, but not with Bernstein. The entire first movement is around 8 minutes long at Gould speed. Be sure you check out his Beethoven stuff. Overall, I love Gould best for his Beethoven.

  • @TheOtherMusicMan Agree... have you seen his performance of the Emperor? Its here on YouTube. One of the best I have ever heard.

  • HAHA! Look at the conductor! I love these old recordings!

  • Of all people in the world, Gould came off as the smartest in interviews.

  • thank you very much for this interesting video!!! :-))

  • what's an acronism?

    thanks

  • anachronism - old-fashioned and otudated

  • @stockcar5472

anachronism = out of place in time.

  • What piece is played at 2:08??????

  • the piece is La Valse, by Ravel. this is actually the first time i've heard the piano version of it!

  • lol just watching his hands on the bach looks like 2 diff brains controlling them

  • Which piano concerto is this he plays at 3.32?

  • 3:44 Exactly why I loved him. He put passion in Bach. He played music with his soul and his whole heart. I love Glenn Gould... we miss you, Glenn. You were a genius. You were fun. You had such life.

  • Thank you!

  • Fantastic.

  • thanks guys, i appreciate the answer, but you can stop replying to my question. i got the message. and yes, i will buy it. and i cant wait to do so!

  • did glenn gould ever record the well tempered clavier?

  • yes, now go buy it!

  • yes..go buy it

  • yes he did, it's really worth getting your hands on!

  • yes. and quite good. you can probably get it on pirate bay.

  • let me think about that...yes

  • he did indeed, both books, in the 1960s. They are on the Sony Classical (formerly Columbia Masterworks, the label GG recorded for) and can be found at most book/CD/music stores like Barnes and Noble, but for sure you can get them on a site called CDuniverse or if nothing else EBay or Amazon.

  • to anentris, the Bernstein/Gould was filmed in 1960, Gould was 28 years old.

  • thank you

  • Anyone knows how old was he here?

  • Show more respect for this great artist, morons.

  • @MovieClipUploads ok, you suck his balls and i'll get him a tray of tea, toast and egg scrambles.

  • Prick.

  • @MovieClipUploads yes, you can suck his prick too...don't pout.

  • you're weird

  • Don't pay any attention to organman52. He's a harmless nut.

  • A composer playing his respect to other composers

  • Anyone have opinions on what he says, not purely on what he plays? It is hard to feel Gould otherwise, I believe.

  • What is he playing at 2:07?

  • La Valse by Ravel

  • but its Gould's variation of it, the whole thing is somewhere on youtube

  • "La Valse" by Ravel

  • I'm just starting with this music; which is the piece at the end with the strings?

  • It's Bach's keyboard Concerto in D minor.

  • thank you so much!

  • its amazing isnt it, the concerto in d minor!, i have another recording of it but doesnt match this!

  • La pieza que toca Gould en el fondo azul es la transcripción para piano de La Valse de M. Ravel

  • thank you :)

  • what's the second piece he plays? the one where he's got the blue background

  • Comment removed

  • i cannot believe what glenn said at 1:28

    that's exactly what i think

  • Why the fuck would you feed a cat donuts? Hahahaha!

  • He likes them, I think the problem is the shitty donuts we have around here. So we are just giving up on that altogether. Also, try buying a decent bagel, oy. I have to drive 120 miles all the way to Skokie to get a reasonable bagle. Now, Molotov does not like bagels. So, not to worry.

  • make your own bagles

  • I like donuts, and so does my cat. His name is Molotov. Sometimes he eats to much and vomits on my carpet. But, he does love Bach and Glenn Gould particularly. So, he is not a bad cat. Even though he is a communist, he is somewhat intellectual. We watched "The Idea of North" together. Now he wants to go to northern Ontario with me. But I think we will just stay here in Wisconsin. By the way, we can't get really good donuts here in Wisconsin like we could in Michigan, Tim Horton's.

  • Your cat is a communist?

  • Yes. He lives in a manner of classless egalitarianism. Essentially he is co-owner of all I have and lives essentially oppression free. He is not into private ownership, I mean, he would gladly share his catbox if I wanted to use it, without reservation. He does not exploit his relationship with me, but as in many communist societies, he is not particularly productive. But as I said, he is fairly pleasant, and he loves when I play piano. He is fond of Bach but has a distaste for Schumann.

  • No way....

  • Truly, he can tell the difference. For example, when I am playing the F minor two part invention he will sit next to me on the piano bench. If I start into Schumann or Beethoven, he will leave immediately. He likes Haydn and Mozart. He seems particularly fond of the adagio opening in the B flat sonata. I have not played much Russian music interestingly, except for some Prokofiev. But that is before Molotov's time.

  • what's the name of the last music?

  • Bach's keyboard concerto in d minor BWV 1052.

This is my second favourite piece of music so I knew that, but it was also in the description of the video.

Gould cannot be surpassed when it comes to Bach

  • haha I love that guy who talks about Gould- "enfant terrible", how pretentious hehe.

  • The Webster's Dictionary also defines an enfant terrible as an unusually successful person who is strikingly unorthodox, innovative, and/or avant-garde. Sounds to me he looked it up in the dictionary. So I fail to see the comment as pretentious.

  • haha i didnt know the term "enfant terrible" until just now either, dont worr... thanks, calcmandan :]

  • I looked it up too. ;)

  • I thought, 'oh how cool would it be if I used that term?' I looked it up and, to my disappointed, I'd probably find a suitable time to use it once in my life, and by then I'll forget to use it. So, meh.

  • I'd like a response regarding the name of "that Bach concerto".

  • That would be the concerto in d minor for cembalo (although often played on a piano) BWV 1052. The part included here is the end of the first movement, but YouTube has all 3 movements from the same recording as the clip shown here. Hope this helps.

  • I love his performance of Bach, especially near the end of this clip. Extremely gifted pianist.

  • Will somebody please tell me which piece he is playing from 2:10 to 3:10?

  • He's playing his transcription of Ravel's "La Valse", not the kind of repertory he usually performed!

  • wow, that was amazing....what were the pieces he played?

  • Was GG from this world? Breathtaking! Espescially the Bach concerto at the end.

  • glenn gould , glenn gould , gllenn gould only glenn gould ,, wonderfullll wonderfulll , please more video of him

  • I can't get enough of GG either!

  • This is wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this. I had been looking for it for months.
