@steej45 if you get the border collie when he/she is a pup they will be use to the cats, its when a dog only owner comes into contact with cats is when you have a problem
Don't declaw your cats, it's cruel and unnecessary. A declawed cat has no defence against other cats or dogs, and can't climb or stretch it's toes properly.
Border collies are USUALLY not great with cats as they tend to want to chase anything that moves - something the cats don't appreciate. Border collies don't have much of a killer instinct though, if they actually catch the cat I doubt they'd hurt it.
A BC puppy that has grown up with cats should be fine with those cats.
@Luculencia I agree with you about not declawing cat's I'm totally against it, I have 3 cat's & a scratched sofa because of them but hey they're my babies lol, I also have a 7 month old border collie who we got when she was only 6 weeks old & she is alway's being told off for chasing the cat's, but when she chases them her tail is wagging & I think she is only wanting to play with them, but they have none of it & hiss at her.
Yanno they say animals especially dogs take after the personality traits of their owners. These two are so cute and loving to one another, I'd say that's a good sign for you and your SO....:)
@ieatdeadbabies101 Is your dog okay that long on his own, cause I really want a border collie, but I just don't know If he can be alone that long, Can they be alone when they have a buddy to play with??
@MANofINACTION : The number of generalizations in that last post are astounding, and i can sense discussing this won't go anywhere. A dog's behaviour always reflects that of the guardian's ability to nurture and provide guidance, so perhaps most people you know might want to watch The Dog Whisperer. Peace out.
@MANofINACTION : perhaps the border collies you know, but not the ones i know. Farm animals are farm animals and have relation to other dogs who have never experienced farm life. Generalization such as these don't help any breed, or species. Circumstance is as important as heredity.
In general collies and must herding dogs do not get along with cats. They try to herd them. I live with an aussie and two cats. The cats live upstairs and the dog down stairs. The dog is fine with one cat (both sleep on my bed), but not the other cat--anytime he moves she (the dog) chases him.
My cat took off when I got a border collie puppy. Border collies tend to herd (follow and stare) cats relentlessly and cats in general hate that. Maybe if they both were babies and grew up together, that might work? I have no experience on that.
I know I'll catch flak from all of the cat lovers out there but just goes to show you, Dogs are smarter than cats! Well certainly Border Collies are!!! They know the difference between a mother kitty and a dog at least ;-)
When Rosie has had enough, she rolls over on her back just like Winston did! That is so funny! Rosie's cat would have been biting her... Winston's cat was just cuddling!
Aww that's just to cute, How old is you're dog? I have a 7 month old black & white border collie bitch & she's very playful & loving.

Its like the dog is allergic to the cat. Every time he nibbles at the cat he scratches his face lol.

absolutely love this video.. border collies are so very gentle loving creatures.. and cats seem to instinctively know this.
