problem is how many people want to pay the extra for the permit? the most famous line I hear people ask me? "Is there a cheaper way to do this? What I like about this show is now I can say Don't you watch mike holmes? usualy ends that problem. my favorite to date is the lady wanted bedrooms in her basemsnt but did not want to pay the extra to have windows put in. turned that down, when someone dies her line is, he said i didn't need them. love what this guy has done love his show.

H actualy mentions it in one of his shows the guy said somthing to the effect of, it's what mike holmes would do. best advice I can give is when in doubt look it up on the internet. ask them questions they don't like it to bad. I love it when someone waches my work. keeps me honest and I can show why it costs extra to do things rite. not that I know a 1/10 of what mike does but what i do i do well.

My husband is a master electrician, in the trade for over 30 years and most of our friends are in one trade or another. I get the info from them. Mike's name comes up on the job site once in a while. They guys that don't know crap are the ones saying Mike is a jerk, etc. I would also be very wary of someone claiming they're doing what Mike would. A good contractor wouldn't rely on someone else's name to try to give him credibility.

cabinetry i never got any papers for it its one of those areas that few get anything in writing for. In the industry you get a reputaion pretty quick and like they say your only as good as your last job. havn't done it for about 10 years now. blew my shoulder out and wanted a change anyway. so now off to law school. still dabble in it, handy man stuff mostly. the odd reno, trick is just do what you know and hire the pro's for the rest. if they don't like that then hire someone else.

I toured a brand new home (not even finished fully) and I was amazed at how craptastic the quality was. Thanks to people like Mike and other great reno shows I am able to see things I previously would not have looked at.

I think Mike should be appointed special consultant to the Canadian government and should be given a mandate to update building codes in Canada.

Steeper fines and possibility of jailtime wouldn't hurt. Not to mention more home inspectors, though educating yourself is paramount

I have been doing construction since I was 12 and what I have seen boggles the mind. pulling out insulation after the inspection and moving it to the next house, nailing siding to the studs and not putting OSB or plywood on. But remember this, when you get the lowest price for the work, the time available to do quality becomes less. also home inspections are a joke. I have replaced joices that were hanging in the dirt. passed inspection before they bought the house.
