  • Why do incinerators have handles on the inside?

  • @Enderschoice because is not only an incinerator... Is also a shower... Vincent uses it to incinerate all organic waste after his daily personal hygiene to erase any proof of his "condition"... if you wach the movie... you will understand why...

  • Brilliant movie. Jerome and Vincent are both so Sexxxy!!!<3

  • ''Maybe I'm not leaving. Maybe I'm going home.''

    O: He's a nihilist!!!!

    THE END

  • Does anyone know of another movie with the same feel as this one? The same atmosphere...not necessarily the same story or theme, but just the same ambience that's dark and also dramatic like this one...and with a dramatic soundtrack too?

  • @WorldOfSnakes The main thing I'm looking for is a dramatic movie with a similar atmosphere as Gattaca.

  • @WorldOfSnakes I can't really think of any off the top of my head, But you try Good Will Hunting and The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford. Jesse James has a great sound track in my opinion.

  • @WorldOfSnakes good luck with that is it tough to find good films these days, check out The Life of David Gale..it had a similar poignant feel about for me anyway

  • @WorldOfSnakes This film seems to draw on some film noir elements as far as the look of the movie goes. Not really sure what you're refering to but maybe you'd like The Untouchables.

  • This is a great movie, but if he doesn't survive long enough to do his part on the mission, he would have royally fucked the operation up.

Providing misinformation for your own benefit (when there isn't a gun to your head) is immoral, even if the system is set against you.

Living a moral life might not lead to maximum happiness, but it is the only way to 'win' the game called life that I acknowledge.

  • This story is a social commentary using both Jerome and Vincent. Vincent never felt right in the world, he knew he could be more. Jerome never felt right, because he was suppose to be the best and wasn't. Through their interaction they protested the current system, and in the end both attained their ultimate goal. Jerome was able to use himself to help Vincent become the best. They helped each other reach their utmost potential, and Jerome was content. I find this to be a very powerful film.

  • @sloandawg The way you put it makes it all clear to me, thanks.

  • I feel that Jerome killed himself because he has always felt he should've gotten a gold medal, he tried and failed before. But over the years, seeing Vincent succeed, and do the impossible dispite his disadvantage became the only reason for Jerome to live. Now that Vincent has proved that with determination he could succeed, Jerome saw the error of his ways. Aside from Vincent he doesn't have a life, he felt like a burden, he died to let Vincent take over his body fulltime.

  • The doctor wasn't at all surprised about Vincent, when did he find out? In the first interview? Or maybe he ran a test of blood from that investigator's shoe during the one scene where all the employees were being tested for the murder... what are your thoughts?

  • @captclassy the only hint he gives to knowing is that vincent when he gives a pee sample, always used his left hand instead of his right and jerome is right handed.

  • i love this movie so so much

  • "Are you alright Jerome?"...."Terrific!".......Then he goes into the locker room and is about to freakin die!!!! That scene awesome!!!!!

  • Good movie..can't wait for the remake of Logan's Run.

  • @FloridaRaider Good luck with that.

  • "For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving....maybe I'm going home".

  • 1 person had a bronze medal.

  • "I never saved anything for the swim back."

  • How can one person dislike this scene? They must have no emotions, whatsoever.

  • I never thought that maybe, Jerome is incinerating his body, So that it leaves zero trace of his cells? and Vincent can completely take over his identity?

  • @BJJbobby He already had a lifetimes worth of urine, skin samples, etc. There was no use for him anymore.

  • there used to b the same video but in video description said "A brilliant and emotional ending" or something along the lines of that, and it sticks with me wenever i look this up

  • One of the most emotional endings I've seen in Film.

  • I've watched more than a few Best Movie Endings type videos and have yet to see this great movie's ending included. It must be in some collection somewhere but, if it isn't, what an oversight.

  • this shit is comming back again.

  • Comment removed

  • their are two stories here. Both different angles on the human spirit. We all know ( and love ) Vincents tale of overcoming inferior genetics etc. Jerome's tells that even those standing at the top of the podium fall, his 1st place mentality was his downfall and ended up crippling him but, his triumph of spirit and act of contrition brought someone else to their dream....2 beautiful angles.....movies like this give me faith in humanity....

  • I hate how the song ends on a minor chord. it just doesnt fit after Vincents words

  • I've spent my entire night searching for this movie in at least parts so I coould review it for a geneticsa class blog post... This part is the one that I know had us speechless.

  • When Vincent thanks the doctor in the way he stares at him is priceless

  • OMG i love your youtubevideo...muawwhhh...eheheheh (psyche)

  • So did the doctor let Vincent go because he wanted him to achieve his dreams even though he knew he was imperfect?

  • @JinNOSify

The doctor said his son was Vincent's fan and wanted to apply for GATTACA, but he wasn't "all that they promised." Probably an invalid. But when he found out Vincent was an invalid and still made it, he let him go.

  • "I was as good as any of them and better than most"

  • This scene is enough to make me cry!

  • Jerome tried to kill himself before when he "only" got the silver medal for swimming instead of the gold. Now that he's crippled, he can't hope for any medal at all, so here's more determined than ever to end his life.

  • Y does Jeroam kill himself?

  • It's going to be a sad day when we end up having to be identified by what's in our urine.

  • This is a great movie! we just finished watching it in my Bio 2 class

  • @MeAndMyDog4Ever Haha, we just finished watching it in my Bio 1 class!

  • who's hair is that, inside the folded paper?

  • @brianyi I think it's Jerome's hair; I think that he is probably leaving a part of himself for Vincent to remember him by.

  • @brianyi all the hair that jerome gave to vincent was for the purpose of vincent concealing his true identity and part of a monetary exchange between the two men. the lock of hair that Jerome gives vincent is for a sentimental reason...i think the filmmakers are trying to say that what started as a superficial exchange became a deep relationship

  • when ever i go to the doctor i hold it with my left!

  • Thanks to you, now I can finally watch this awesome movie once again, Gattaca, this name I won't forget the name

  • When we see the close-up of Jerome's silver medal as he's being incinerated, the flames make it appear gold. Strong symbolism there.

  • @TheTruthIsZer0 and don't forget it is also a visual cue about Vincent and his brother swimming to see who was the better man...the Genetically enhanced Detective or the Spirited Astronaut!

  • @faithbirthedGATC One flaw with your statement is that the technology was only able to remove defective traits but can't add better traits.

  • @eliteslyer Indeed,you are quite correct-My mistake

  • I was really blown away by this movie and the ending of course. Not saving anything for the trip back was of course a metaphor for his determination to attain his lifelong goal of space travel.

  • the problem with this is that i think the people who were born perfect would be the outcasts. Because they'd be different from the people who are already born with flaws. At least at first, when this is beginning, I believe the hate would be focused toward the perfected people. But that's just my opinion

  • the ending is significant not only about the two guys but when you see how they look at each of the people in the spaceship are different races. This kinda shows that there isnt discrimination in race, but in DNA.

  • omg ! JUDE LAW ! i love u <3

    fuck , i cried :'(

  • WAIT! why does jerome incinerate himself??

  • @Superbonnuit He is no longer needed; with Vincent's supply stocked up for years, he's ready to let go of his life, the burden it had become The moment he traded his life away, he no longer had an identity, and without it, no reason to keep living. Remember, he got in the wheelchair by walking in front of a car; he was prepared to do it sooner or later, but he wanted to do at least one good thing with his life, which was give Vincent a chance to fulfill his dream.

  • @CH3BURASHKA ;( thats ummm actually really sad....poor jude law lol...

  • I always figured that the hair was for Vincent to clone when he got back to Earth, so Jerome could get a second chance.

  • Well done how the whole scene is so full of emotion, yet they can't express it. This movie is truly awesome. Great acting! and great story. One of my favorites.

  • @verontg9

Okay, remember when Vincent went for the interview and the samples he was trying were all not working? Then he got the last one and it worked, then he went to the interview and the lab tester guy said to Vincent "Remember to tell you about my son" so at the end as you just saw the same lab guy says "did i ever tell you about my son?" His son was like Vincent, he dreamed of getting into Gattaca but like Vincet, he wasn't genetically perfect enough for Gattaca so he helped Vincent cause

  • @HannahLoveParamore My mind...is now blown.

All these years, I watched this fantastic film at least once annually, and this thought never occurred to me.

    Brilliant.

  • Someone explain me please...Who is the doctor, why help him????

  • Im not gay! But the foucking ending made me cry, i feel bad for jerome.

  • everytime i watch this video, i cry. its not just about two men working together to make a dream come true. it's so much more about life, about pushing through the impossibilities, about keeping hope. even though the ending is sad, it's filled with so much love and sacrifice and hope for a better future. this movie is absolutely stunning.

  • :D phim hay thật :D .

  • At 2:31

He says a lot without saying anything at all.

  • looove this soundtrack

  • The doctor reminds me of something Paulo Coelho said in one of his books:

"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it"

  • One of my favorite films. It has so many layers, and is so overlooked.

    A truly magnificent film.

  • @SPQRImperator

Overlooked...? Especially the fact that the principle HAD to be a member of the current dominant group so that.. i. it wouldn't harm box office. ii. we could all emphasize with him..

Good film yes. But the realpolitik is there for all who care to open their eyes.

The REAL message of the film continues to evade the majority.

  • @itsdastuff I have no idea what you just typed.

    English, please.

  • one of my favorite film endings. Glad to see it again.

  • @TheLatterRain

    Dude! You're An Idot!

  • @TheLatterRain It wasn't the act of fraud that lead to his success, it was the incredible amount of hard work he put in meeting the real standards Gattaca set for it's employees.

  • @TheLatterRain Obama failed!

  • I'm absolutely not a person who is crying because of movies, but this one...

"Maybe I'm not leaving... Maybe I'm going home..."

  • The whole int of jerome crenating himself was to get rid of his life so Vincent can live up to his extension of 30 years

  • great movie! I dont knw what conclusion one must do, but randomness of an allele genes is the randomness our life! if you look when they swim, nature bits the hand made one, and saves it, hope that day, when every one will screen their babies wont come! I hope that day never will be!

  • IF THIS IS YOUR STORY PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I would like to write a book of humble, hard working people who reached their dreams agains all odds!

Please leave your story in my YouTube channel or in my e-mail: phantom_k7@yahoo.com..

    Thank you!

  • If they set that God-Child free it will be then end of all of us!!!

    NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • This is my favorite movie. The ending was my favorite part and the music made it so dramatic! I don't think any movie I have ever seen can compare to the amount of emotion and drama in this last part of Gattaca.

  • Why was there a handle on the inside of the incinerator? In case someone changed their minds and wanted to get out?

  • @Taopuppy no that was where vincent scrubbed off his hair skin etc and then burned it to destroy evidence.

  • I always admired the look on Jerome's face during his last few moments... it seemed to coldly and rationally say, "I was second best to Vincent, because he made a purpose for himself, and I can not." Followed by one last defiant thought, "I will not live without a purpose." And then he matches his actions to his thoughts.

That's why I feel sad watching this, Jerome demonstrated his self worth and then died by his own hand.

  • There is no gene for the human spirit.

  • Slightly confuzzled here, was he in the incinerator or was he in a rocket going into space?

  • @dragonmag123 Jerome climbed in the furnace in the house and cremated himself so there'd be no remains.

  • @dragonmag123 He was in the rocket going on a space mission for a year to Titan, one of Saturn's moons...

  • The the movie is mostly an inspirational tale about Vincent overcoming the prejudices of genoism, Jerome's story provides a cautionary tale from the other side of the coin. He is a victim of the prejudice of expectations... raised to take his talents for granted, he was unprepared for random debilitating tragedy. When we expect perfection, we are not as capable of dealing with reality or imperfection.

  • @prothonotar It wasn't unexpected. He stepped out in front of the bus. That's why he's in the wheelchair.

  • @doodl3bugg13 Fair enough... my memory's a little ragged. So instead of an accident (although I guess you can say that surviving the crash was an accident), you can say Jerome was unprepared to handle defeat (coming in second).

  • @prothonotar I assumed it was because of his failure that he stepped out in the first place.

  • @doodl3bugg13 that's what i mean... he didn't live up to the expectations set on him (which were, after all, merely statistical), and he couldn't handle it; whereas Vincent refused to limit himself to the likewise statistical expectations set on him.

  • I think it activated when he closed the door

  • What I want to know is...who would build an incinerator that could be activated from the inside?

  • @R1COtheB3AST

Ok, ok, you made me laugh during a serious moment.

    Well done, sir.

  • @R1COtheB3AST

It activated when he fully closed the door (he turned the handle on the door.)

  • I think if science will take us to this level one day no matter how much we will be able to modify our physical or mental abilities it will not matter for technology will never be able to conquer the soul, as the soul is where the true self lies, it's power will always be unparalleled and we should never forget this.

  • The great irony of the film, rarely mentioned, is how genetic science was discovered, methodized, and realized from what essentially are all in-valids. However, the message promises hard work can achieve your dreams. But this reasoning is faulty. Dreams do not calculate the mathematics of chance. Few, if any, achieve their dreams regardless of station or beginning. In the final analysis, it's a roll of the dice, rather than science or effort. But, every so often, the house gets taken too ;)

  • i love his face when he tells him he is gonna miss his flight........thats acting right there......you can see the tears starting to well up in him at the realization that the doctor knew the whole time and rooted for him all along......

  • This movie got me through High School both in dealing with grades and people. Don't get me wrong I had great days but High School can be hard.

  • This is the most important film in my life.

  • "right handed men, don't hold it with their left" - what? i do, is there something wrong with me? =O

  • @apo115 no. i do too. it's just it's one of those things that lets me plan my day while i piss.

it's just a plot device that show you that that the doctor knows who the hero really is.

  • the ending was so emotional, darn near cried...

  • @sunsetsbythesea dont lie...you cried just like the rest of us......

  • "Maybe I'm not leaving, maybe I'm going home....."

    pure genius

  • I think that Jerome was killing himself in pride...great ending...so sad though..i almost cried...i just wish he could have killed himself any different way than burning...such a horrific way to go...]: but he couldn't leave any traces of himself for vincent's sake...at first i didn't know what he was getting into but then it shows the thing on fire...omg, such an emotional scene...excellent film however.

  • @christymills1 \

    1. Before meeting Vincent, Jerome had no purpose in life; but having never had one before he didn't know any different.

    2. After meeting Vincent, Vincent became Jerome's purpose. Helping Vincent acheive his dream was goal enough for Jerome to go on living.

    3. After Vincent left, Jerome no longer had a purpose again, but now he knew what it was like to have one. He couldn't go back to being purposeless, but couldn't form his own. So he ends his life.

  • Xander Berkeley ftw

  • stupendo.... so inspired

  • great film!!!!!!

  • Great, great movie. Makes you think...

    .. who am I???

  • Whats the name of the orchestra song?

  • @hasayo666 The Departure, its from the soundtrack.

  • absolutely awesome. "Remember that I was as good as any, and better than the most"

  • this ending is like a double edged sword of sadness and beauty the jerome char kills himself knowing he has nothing 2 live for holding his necklace while vincent is fullfilling his biggest dream

  • @Potatoslice iam not sure about that. Jerome got Vincents Dream, and once Vincent reached it...Jerome finally felt that he had reached it too. I dont not think jerome is sad when he kills himself, he does it because he is fulfilled.

  • love it love it love it

  • Tell me I'm not the only one who cried buckets when Jude Law's character died. D:

  • Everyone is so emotionless in the future... did they rid the gene of the smile muscles?

  • everything about this movie is good accept the fact that jerome kill himself and vincent will die pretty soon because the longest he gonna live is 30.2 years old

  • So whats up with the ending. did vincent think he was going to get caught by giving him his own piss. or did he know that the dude was going to let him go???????? WTF

  • he didnt think there was going to be a DNA test but there was as the guy says, "new policy"

  • far out i cant get over how awesome this movie is, launching into space is a dream

  • Actually Vincent's dream is to get off Earth, because it discriminates him. His childhood being denied entry to most schools over "insurance" reasons, his job being a janitor.

  • I love when he goes swimming with his brother. This movie was so good, I gotta update mine to blu-ray

  • Makes me cry every time

  • I didn't know this movie until one day I bought a ticket at a theatre thinking I was going to see another movie that had a similar name.

However, since I am a sci-fi movie fan, it turned out this movie is one of my all-time favourite.

  • Great movie!

  • Look how his Silver medal appears Gold in the flame, he is finally number one...

  • yes this is amazing

  • smart...

  • @StandTogetherForever Wow I didn't even notice that

  • @StandTogetherForever Good spot

  • @StandTogetherForever I LOL'd hard :D

  • @StandTogetherForever awesome observation

  • Because Jerome killed himself, and because Vincent doesn't have anything left to accomplish.

  • But I think that the movie is the complete story and a sequel would just ruin this marvelous ending.

  • Best movie I ever saw...EVER!

I can't help but getting emotional when watching the ending! Sirdee1: of course it is not his dad doing the sample, it's the man who works for the company...he always knew about Vincent, and became his accomplice!

  • This movie is unbeliveable....I can't believe it did'nt do well in the box office when it came out..its now a cult classic.

  • For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home

  • its an amazing movie, its on my top 5 of all time and always will be, but only thing i dont get at the end is, that is that vincents dad doing the sample?

  • they died already. that's what anton said when he was confronting vincent about what he was doing imposing as jerome.

  • No, the guy was indirectly telling Vincent that he knew he was a fraud by telling him the story about his own son, then gave him a tip about how he knew by saying "for future reference, right handed men don't hold it with their left"

    Magnificent film!

I just hear the opening score and I'm welling up!

  • this movie is about the pursuit of your dreams and the passion and sacrifice to reach them. this movie changed my way of thinking, when i was told by many that due to my situation i would never reach my dream. but to go beyond the limits of what is expected . there is no situation that can stop you from achieving your dreams .This Movie is an affirmation

  • best movie at its time =3

  • my teacher showed us this movie in biology class

  • Same here. I really liked it.

  • I remember watching this movie on VHS not long after it's release and thinking that it was the most depressing movie I had ever seen. And probably it still is. But mostly, now, I can't stop thinking about how beautiful it is.

  • "I have never been further away from my goal than when I was standing right next to it"

Wow, thats exactly how I feel a lot....

    Just a great movie A++++

  • yea........

  • What a shame you share yourself here and not with those that love and adore you. Sometimes you lose the fight to try and break through.....

  • Truly, I'm happy to say that im engaged to be married to this movie.

  • I think about this movie and think about the plot and the message the movie gets across and realise that we as humans really can do anything even if there are policies saying we can't be astronauts or doctors. We can be what we will to be.

  • one among the best movies i have ever seen in my life.

  • I can without shame say this is THE movie that makes me cry. I love it.

  • This movie makes me continue to believe in myself. Its one hell of an EXCELLENT movie.

  • great movie, really underrated !

  • Yes, this movie was great and the ending the nonpareil. Nothing is impossible, as long as you try your ass off, and run in to an understanding sort along the way.

  • makes me cry every single time *cries*

  • A more than emotional ending. Gattaca helped me to stay on when I likely was about to end my life.
