I don't think that it was a waste of food, that is if you agree that art is not a waste. And he was sharing it with all of us. The food is simply his art supplies. If he had used some other medium, someone could argue that he could have used the money on those art supplies to feed someone (but we could all do that with what we spend on our luxuries).
