@kiasmus If one has studied the technique, one would dispel any notion of "kitsch" in it. It's a highly emotional and introspective technique. There is no way to fake the movement, if you tried, you would look stiff. The use of the breath as a mechanism to move the body gives the dancer an astounding release of energy and human emotion. Far from kitsch. The costumes, gay apotheose? So what, being gay in the era Clytemnestra was written did not hold the same ridicule you're suggesting. Rethink.
@kiasmus I don't think it's kitsch. And the costumes are by Holston, I believe, which explains what you say. Anyway, one of the happiest afternoons of my life is the time I sat for about three hours in the library at Lincoln Center and watched this entire full length ballet. I think it's stunning!
@andrewdancing I did the same thing many times - sat in Lincoln Center for hours on end, I was so mesmerized by the technique. Love Graham, wish I could dance it forever.
This vid is over 30 years old. I never understood why it was never commercially released. Other PBS specials have been. Is there a legal reason why it got held up?
Fascinating. I can't believe how much this draws me in...

@kiasmus It's certainly not kitsch if kitsch and avant garde are defined as opposites, which they often have been.

@Sierpinski1
I expect so. Search "Martha Graham legal" on any search engine about the battles over who would control her dances after her death.
