if you're going to argue about whether or not metallica "sold out" i should like to point out that almost every time a band changes at all, somebody says they sold out. and the band says they didn't. it's not worth arguing over, because you will NEVER find conclusive proof.

personally, i dislike this album musically; i think it's not that great lyrically; but if you put both together with james hetfield's demons, it becomes cathartic and powerful. i'm not sure i'd call that change selling out.

People thought that because they didnt have their own gear, Fade To Black would sound like shit cause it wouldn't sound like Metallica. Now look, Fade To Black's one of their most memorable songs. People have always doubted Metallica, and they've ALWAYS put people in their place.

It took me a while to appreciate it, no its no way near as good as Ride The Ligthning or Master of Puppets (In my opinion) but therte's some good stuff there I particularly like Unnamed feeling and Invisible kid, and I can live with a lack of solo's.
