Hi, Well the statue is opposite the Castle, on the main road through the town from the Cardiff direction over the mountain, It is by the entrance to the Twyn carpark that also serves the tourist centre. you have to go down the hill, turn right and return up the hill to get to the entrance, Tommy would have loved that I'm sure.
Being from Caerphilly all I can say is that is nothing, they stole all the other statues in town, besides it took us years to work out that was a rabbit, everyone wondered why they gave him a squirel.
After being out in Caerphilly many, many times I sometimes wish that all I'd woken up with was a traffic cone.
anyone who likes tommy cooper should not be offended by the cone i`m a cooper fan and i know that in his act he put strange things on his head as someone has already said cooper wouldv`e laughed at this
thats like something tommy would have done if he was alive today - with the cone on it`s head that statue is speaking volumes - it tells us what cooper was like in life a really really funny man and the fact that he actually put strange things on his head in is act from a saw to a pair of bulls horns - before the cone the statue said nothing about tommy cooper it didn`t really tell us anything about the man - with that cone there it tells us everything - a funny man
@Ietterposter .. Exactly, one more reason for the video, to make it available to jog people's memories as to how funny he was ....... ! spoon jar .....
stupid idiots nowadays have to vandalise everything, and what idiot made this movie, does it really need to take 2 minutes before u actual show the freaking statue ??
@BurningWicky1 in his act tommy cooper put funny strange things on his head and it made people laugh - who ever done this to the statue should be congratulated because the statue with the cone onits head has got the message across to people - tommy cooper was a comic genius who did silly things like that and it made him famous
To be fair if a cone is put on a statues head thats surely a symbol of something comedic, therefore i dont think tommy cooper wouldnt of minded aslong as it made people laugh.
Tis a mystery Haydon , they must have crept in at night and did the dirty deed, Me thinks Tommy was asleep or just snoozing to much ! LoL...................
Thanks for removing your hoity-toity comment but, as the saying goes...one man's meat is another's poison or there's no accounting for taste or...never mind. I still think today's comics, though funny, lack what it takes. So what if they write their own material? The older generation of comics were perfectionists and professional & didn't find it below themselves to work with others to get the best out of a funny situation. Even if the material was from others, the presentation
I removed it because I can't be bothered to debate something which, as you say, is highly subjective. By the way, excellent punctuation and spelling (not sure about "hoity-toity". Never seen it in print before. I have a feeling there hould be some "gh"s in there but not sure). Very refreshing on Youtube. If you reply please don't spell "patronising" with a "z". All the best. PS How come Arthur Askey didn't get into your "Hall of Fame"? :O)
Where, oh where, are the great British comedians of old? Perhaps this modern age is not fertile ground for funny jokes any more. Who can reach the standards set by the likes of Tommy Cooper himself, Frankie Howerd, Spike Milligan, Tony Hancock, Morecombe & Wise, Tommy Trinder, Norman Wisdom, Bud Flanagan, Benny Hill, and a host of others who made Britain Great. Since Rowan Atkinson no longer appears to cheer our spirits...who is left?
Rubbish! There are plenty of excellent comedians - most of whom, unlike the list you reeled off (with the exception of Spike Milligan) write their own material.
I think you're the one who needs to get a grip. Tommy Cooper was a comic - not a bloody saint. or a war hero. If people are daft enough to put up statues to comedians they should expect this sort of reaction. Besides, what damage did the cone do? In his act Tommy used to wear lots of funny hats. He would have probably appreciated the joke. What a bloody fuss about nowt!
I love Tommy Cooper, but y'know as disrespectful as this is - I can't help but think Tommy would be looking down and laughing himself silly at the sight of it!
Spoon Jar! Jar Spoon Jar!
No Traffic Cone can take the legacy of this man's genius away.
Exactly the thoughts we had, he was an exceptionable funny man,and he would love to know he still makes us laugh ourselves dry.
Have you walked the Tommy Cooper Walk of fame near the statue yet, It is rumoured you can sometimes hear him laughing softly at night ! ............ maybe this weekend.
Einstein, Leonardo, Newton, Mozart, Darwin, ... geniuses. Tommy Cooper - a one-gag comedian who made a successful career by wearing a fez, laughing inanely, stumbling his way through conjuring tricks and telling jokes written for him by a team of comedy writers. I know he made a lot of people laugh and that's great - better than making people cry. But let's reserve words like "genius" for people who merit it. Otherwise it becomes as meaningless as the ubiquitous "awesome"!
An interesting perspective there mikelheron, and one which I respectfully disagree with.
Your argument could be levelled at someone like Charlie Chaplin...afterall what did he do apart from walk silly and fall over alot, but is he a genius!? undoubtedly so!
Chaplin did his own thing in his own inimitable style and he shaped comedy for generations to come.
Tommy was the same, he only had to walk on stage, say nothing & audiences were in bits! Genius comes in many guises.
I could live with "genius" applied to Chaplin. In addition to falling over he: wrote his own screenplays, directed, composed music, was capable of biting satire and was genuinely innovative. Tommy Cooper was none of these things. However, I suspect we won't agree.
By the way. I'm not saying Tommy Cooper wasn't funny. He was - very funny. So was my uncle Jim - but neither were geniuses. In case you're wondering why my uncle Jim never made it big, he just didn't get the breaks. That S.O.B. Hughie Green ...!
How on earth does putting a traffic cone on the head of a bronze statue ruin Tommy Cooper's legacy of comedy? It sounds to me like a typical student prank - not very original but hardly the crime of the century.
This was done on my birthday!
