The first you ever edited? Man it's great!! B¬) I'm just getting back into it again after nearly 15 years. And yes it is, the best sport on Planet Earth.
@wordreet Ahhhh yes. You just reminded me. I loaned my street sailor to my son 10 years ago. He hasn't brought it back. Probably just as well; those things could be dangerous if you didn't jibe every 10 seconds.
@Axxis171 You're Welcome. This was the first video I ever edited. OMG it's 20 years old now. I changed the music 10 years ago. I had a lot to learn back then; but it's still my favorite.
@1oldsurfdude I still have an old Gaastra racefoil pro as featured in this video sitting in the shed back in Australia. These videos were released when I was at University and we would spend the entire two months of summer vacation sailing (or sitting on the beach waiting). If only I could rewind time I'd give up all the technology and other crap to enjoy days like those again.
@Axxis171 I started when there was only one brand of sailboard "Windsurfer". Everyone had the same board and sail. We raced every weekend somewhere there was wind. The wives, families, kids, all went together. We brought picnic lunches and BBQ'd dinner; Drank, sang songs, had tin foil parties, Great memories.
@1oldsurfdude haha... I started quite some time after that in 1984 at the age of 13 but my first board was still a good old (hand-me-down) windsurfer one design with a wooden centreboard and a triangle sail which I couldn't lift out of the water when wet. After all these years I still think Windsurfing is the best sport on the face of this planet...
Anders S17 was one hell on a racer. He had the best lay down gybe in the world. He always looked so stylish on a board, He even made the old Div 2 board look good!!!
@rohrmeiz Anders Brindal one of the best racer ever, Course or Slalom. He was also one of the best Div2 racer in the world. I think he won the olympic but not 100% sure.
That Gaastra Heart and Soul Video was brillient when it first came out! Always had the original music going through my head when I was blasting on a 5.5 Slalom sail and a Sputnick 270 board.
Thanks for putting the video on, its good to update the music as well.
Kitesurfing does have a lot on windsurfing but the pure speed you get from a windsurfing rig is never matched on a kitesurf.
The sound of only the tips of waves hitting the bottom of your board and the feeling of flying just above the sea with the wind roar in your ears gets you hooked 4 like on windsurfing.
@fattrav44 I would say windsurfing and kiteboarding are two different sports. For some people kiteboarding is where its at and for others its windsurfing. And some love both. This video is about windsurfing....
there were guys wave riding and sailing freestyle 35 years ago. Most of my friends and I couldn't jump waves very well, but all of us could go fast. The adrenaline rush of sailing at 30 + mph, racing all your buddies is something I wish everyone could experience. I get pumped just thinking about it, and I'm pushing 70 years old.
They sailed that old slalom gear well. The modern scene has forgotten about the amazing lifting ability of cammed sails. Still, the majority of the world's waters don't get the regular 30 knots it takes to make 60 L pin tailed boards work. The industry still talks about how this performance expectation "ruined windsurfing" in the 90's. Now you can get freeride gear that blasts in 12 knots with 7m sails and boards that are over 60 cm wide and short enough fit in cars, not 55cm wide and 9' long.
The guy with the silver/blue sail is Phil McGain, former world course racing champion. The other guy is Mathias Holmberg who sailed for Tiga in the Professional Boadsailing Association.
I had this vid on v,h,s years ago If I remember correctly it's phill magain and Mathias holmberg and it was the reasons I still sail slalom kit in surf , and are having a blast when other are sitting on the beach following windsurfing fashion ! The good old days ! Wish more windsurfers would try this kind of approach they don't know what they are missing !

Very nice video. I used to have this same Gastra sail in 5.0. It was fast and easy to sail. Good old times!!!
I would say that boards are about 70 to 80 liters, blue sail is 5.0 and other sail is 4.4.
Slalom gear was and still is blast!

how much liter are those boards?
MrWabbawabba 2 years ago
I'm guessing the boards are about 60 liters. The sails look like 4.0 to 4.5. I could be off. someone else may know exactly.
