This made my life. Any song written about soil is just amazing. I love silly scientists. Thanks for this cover! I love it! And the fact that you slipped it into conversation - you must be a fantastically cool person. :)
As an undergrad, it took a class in soil science. I had planned on becoming an environmental science minor at the time to go along with my philosophy major. According to the NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Services) antigo soils are characterized as having been formed in "silty material underlain by sand and gravel on glacial outwash plains." It is further described as "a versatile soil, supporting mainly dairy, potato, and timber production." That is so HAWT!
That is exactly why I love this song! The rhymes are goofy and the lyrics don't always make complete sense, but this guy was *passionate* about soil, and that is awesome. Thanks (as always!) Russ!
State Soil!!!??? Who would have thunk it?? You made a science lesson sound real nice. I would like to see Bill Nye the science guy do that!!! I think you have opened up a whole new use for ukulele music. Soundtracks for educational films! I Once wrote a song about the digestive system called Chew Swallow And Digest. I will post it as a response to this as soon as I can find a recording and figure out how to play it.
Oh, I can't wait for that video! Isn't it weird that Wisconsin has a state soil? Apparently only a handful of states do. I learned that in high school so I could take a test for a scholarship...and I've never forgotten that little tidbit.
A soil scientist with the last name HOLE ?? I think you just made that up. Who was his partner, Dr. Rutherford Worms ? Heh heh.

Very Nice -- all I need to make my day complete is to know that Mr Hole played ukulele.
reyalpEleluku 2 years ago
I haven't found anything that says he did, but I did find a picture of him wearing a long-sleeved t-shirt and a bowtie!

so you think the circumstantial evidence is pretty good?

It seems entirely possible...

Wow! You must realize you've gone mad. But in such a great, musical, life-affirming way. Great job unearthing that one!
BTW - Indiana's state soil is Miami Silt Loam, but my online digging has yielded no song written for it. Another point for Wisconsin.

It's near the end of my school term...so yes, I have indeed lost my mind!:) Good to hear about Indiana's soil--I think you've found your mission!!!
