  • Brilliant show. No other show even comes close to this. RIP Carroll O ..

  • Meat-head!

  • "were going to raise that child christian and break every commandment doing it" hahah i love archie.

  • Go, Mike!

  • Loled @ the "Don't turn around or you'll turn into a pillar of salt"

  • TV used to be bold, fair and well-rounded. Not to mention suitable for the whole family. Now, it's all reality shows, Ken and Barbie dramas and dissecting humans to music. The beauty of this show is that no one was completely right and no one was completely wrong. The show attacked liberalism as much as it attacked conservatism. It even attacked the center. Everyone's views, left, right or center were treated with humor, irony and pathos. This is good TV.

  • @cinematedman Yes, exactly! The art in TV!

  • This is EPIC !

  • Were gunna raise that grandson of ours a Christian if we have to break every commandment to do it.

    XDXDXD

  • Lol, hilarious. Ah I miss good TV. Very few good shows nowadays.

  • social satire at it's best. (my dad was worse than Archie!) Today, too many would whine an cry about being offended. USA is Toast today because truth has taking a back seat to being politically correct.

  • Holy crap, they were airing this stuff back when there was only a few channels to watch!? That is awesome! Too bad now adays its concidered social suicide to mention Atheist ideas on television. You know what I say? Pthththt to god. ^_^

  • @Aeriths it depends on the country. Some countries are bashing religion all time..

  • Holy crap, I had no idea they tackled these kinds of subjects in the 70s

  • This show had major balls. I wish they would tackle these subjects today.

  • Its f*ck*ed d up that these topics and issues are central to human existence, yet we neeeever see them in popular media.

  • they don't make shows like this anymore. this show had the balls to have some substantive discourse.

oh, and fuck a god. lol.

  • archie needs apologetics class to help defend his faith

  • Mother Nature's "full name"....Grace Nature.........LMBO LOLOLOL

  • @jschwind435 I agree, the producers tried to make him out to be the good guy on the show and it drove me nuts! He was nothing but a free loading asshole!

  • @jschwind435 LMAO- It's just a TV show. That's all it was.

  • @jschwind435 Typical rightwing dipshit.

  • Wasn't this show set in NYC?? Imagine having a neighbor like Archie in one of the more liberal cities of this country.

  • @whoo689 I wish I had him for a neighbor, you could trust him & he would keep his shit off my yard & his yard clean.

  • This show was hilarious, but Archie sure was an ultraconservative asshole nonetheless.

  • "when they get older there having too much fun to be religious." LMAO!!!!!

  • Help me start a forum going at - religious freeforums org : ) (add the dots inbetween)

  • Why's Archie's wedding ring on the wrong finger

  • According to Archie, we have to teach our children: "To defend American shores in all foreign countries."

This is hilarious, of course. But sadly, it's exactly what we've done. We've convinced ourselves, and our kids, that our lives and our tax dollars should be wasted, while we "defend" America and "freedom" by occupying countries that pose absolutely no threat to us.

Why are we wasting billions in Iraq and Afghanistan? Because we've all been brainwashed like Archie Bunker.

  • @jsoynbnj Grow up

  • While I respect Mike's intentions, his plan seems to be shielding his child from religion which is a passive endorsement of athiesm.

  • @mustang6172

Mikes kinda a dumbass that way.

Though I find myself loving everyone in this fictional family.

  • @mustang6172 this is expecially true after u watch the "Archie's Place" episode when Gloria and Joey come back. Joey is older and can talk in the episode. Archie sits and talks with Joey about the bible and he doesnt even know what it is. U cant pick a side if u dont fully know what one side has to offer. Its kind of like food, how do u know that u dont like it if u dont try it.

  • @nickninja27 Have you read the koran? How do you know what being a muslim is like if you havn't tried it yet.....

  • what r u talking about? i never said anything about the muslims. but for ur info i have taken a class on Islam. Figured it would help since al-queda exists.

  • Also that is poor writing. EVERYOBODY knows what the bible is, and as an Atheist, my children will absolutely be educated on religion. How can a child not know what a bible is? That is just silly to depict an Atheist child to not even know what a holy book is. That is like an Atheist child not knowing who Santa is! Nonsense.

  • @MrUsername5678888

Just because Mike is stupid doesn't mean the writers are...

  • @glenvue8,

Once a sitcom starts influencing the President and Congress, it's more than a TV sitcom.

  • The lesson's taught in Church are great for children, as well as many troubled older ppl too, and I see nothing wrong with it at all. I think our whole society, especially the younger generation has their priority's straight up their rear! Too many choices for ppl that don't even understand the basics. I don't like anyone "pushing" religion, but there is too much negative talk about it, in the same way their is disrespect for a lot of things now. Too many "know it all's" that know nothing!

  • @cowboysfan782008 Christianity and the Bible is a disgusting immoral religion. Christians had to be dragged kicking and screaming by Athiests into the 20th century otherwise they would still be burning people at the stake and stoning women the way Muslims still do.

  • @DavidLouisRozycki You can think what you want, and so will I.

  • I think it's good commentary on how America historically has been a "carnal" Christian nation where everything was founded on pretend Christianity. The difference between the shows writers and me is that I don't consider that to be a bad thing. It's good to be philosophically Christian and to take the Bible in it's allegorical, grammatical meaning, while rejecting the actual existence of God.

  • Mike was a meathead then and a meathead today...Go Archie!!!

  • @r2roan no buddy you are the meathead wanting to force your beliefs on others.

  • Mike was a meathead then and a meathead today...Go Archie!!!

  • Romans 14:23 (King James Version) 23And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

  • @BCNBilly Leviticus 11:12 Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be detestable to you. go protest captains fucktard

  • @BCNBilly captain d's srry for the typo

  • Wow. Didn't know media back then was so sensible. To bad they can't do it know because to much religious people control the media.

  • .."and he that doubteth,is damned if he eat.." LOL.

  • Archie is such a Right-Wing, authoritarian, but I love him anyway!

  • I grew up on this show, probably seen every episode umpteen times.I`m still amazed at the quality of acting and writing in the show, which i have never seen in any other sitcom from this era or since. And some of the episodes are powerful and emotional(like the one with meathead`s draft dodger friend at the dinner table)This is the single most important and influential american sitcom of all time.

  • Here's a compromise. When the baby is born, have the child baptized. As he or she gets older, then let that child make up his or her mind. Call Infant Baptism a "(religious) insurance policy."

  • @PsychoPunk1965 Archie took the baby to be baptized behind Meathead and Glorias back.

  • Perfect episode!!

  • Wow....

    WOW!!!!!

  • true Christianity does not follow religon but it is when we follow the words of the lord because we want to

  • HAHAHAHA Best Show of all time

  • Just remember this, There is no such thing as an Atheist in a Fox hole.

  • @MrFred92455 Not true. There are Atheist Veterans Organizations go google.

  • @MrFred92455 Really, and you know this for a fact? Even if it were true, it would just prove that it is possible for a persons rational mind to be overcome and influenced by the extreme emotional trauma and fear of war, especially if that person were raised in a culture that said there was an invisible man that can protect you. This psychological anomaly by no means proves that the believed delusion is true.

  • @MrFred92455 - it is sad that you believe there are no atheists in foxholes. Sad, and disrespectful.

  • @Gordonisgreat Disrespectful? To simply feel differently than other people? That is ridiculous. And If I were in a foxhole, I would have more reason to be an Atheist-as I sure wouldn't much feel like something were looking out for me. It's not true just because you say it. Peace to you.

  • @johnnywalker1974 - more true to say there are only atheists in foxholes because otherwise why take cover?

  • When an athiest says "I will not force religion on him, I will let him make up his own mind," He's actually saying "If my kid shows any sign of believing in God, I will do anything to change his mind, even by force."

  • @jamdawg That's very cynical of you. I'm personally okay with my kid believing in a god, even if I don't. I don't know a single person in real life who is an atheist besides some family members. My parents never introduced me to religion, although the family is traditionally Christian so we still celebrated Christmas and Easter and all that. But I learned on my own what those holidays were even for and when I knew I thought it was all quite silly. I have a problem with religion, but not

  • @geegeezlouis86 At least you are letting your child decide for themselves, and I respect you for that. It's just that I've seen enough two faced idiots in my life who do not practice what they preach and try to program their children to be like them.

  • @jamdawg Yes, but that's really no worse than a Christian teaching his children to be Christian, or a Muslim teaching his children to be Muslim, or a Jew teaching his children to be Jewish. It's instinctual to teach your kids to be like you, really. How many times have parents gotten upset to the point of shunning their own children because they decided they believed in something different than they were raised to believe? How many times have gay teens been kicked out of their homes for not

  • @jamdawg adhering to their parents beliefs that homosexuals are hell-bound sinners? They claim to love, up until their kid decides that they don't subscribe to the religion they were brought up on. Of course, not all parents are like that. My grandmother is very religious and she actually raised an atheist, who raised two atheists himself. Of course, she wishes we'd go to church and all that, because she cares about saving our souls and all, but she stays out of it because she loves us and

  • @jamdawg respects our choice in faith. I really believe that I will follow suit. If I find myself trying to mess with my kid's head about it, I hope I'll look back on the conversation and slap myself. :)

  • @jamdawg belief in a creator. They're different things, in my opinion. I have no proof for or against a creator. I'm therefore relatively indifferent but I strongly suspect there is not one which is why I identify as an atheist. If my child wants to believe in a higher power, that's fine. If my child takes comfort in thinking that a figment of his imagination is protecting him, okay. It's not any more my business than my faith was my parents', which is why they stayed out of it. :)

  • @jamdawg - more like "if you dont drum ninsense in before they can think straight it will not get a good hold n them"

I'm paraphrasing what the Jesuits said of course.

  • the good ol' pre-politically-correct days...great show!

  • another great episode! archie and mike had such good on-screen chemistry. carol o'connor played the role to brilliance..especially considering he was an irish-catholic democrat.

  • I notice Gloria (pregnant) has a glass of wine in front of her. I guess Archie doesn't care as long as his grandson is a CHRISTIAN drunk.

  • this series was brilliant.........still is

  • Down to the last line, these are great excerpts from this episode!

  • Shall we pray...

  • Why don't shows like this exist anymore? If "All In The Family" has taught us anything it is that comedy can be used as a very effective vehicle to speak about substantive issues ranging from politics, philosophy, race relations, child rearing, gender equality, and religion. Comedy can do all of this and still be funny. Why is it that today's comedies don't do this, even though we have less barriers from censors than back in the 1970s?

  • @alphacause people are too sensitive now. it's too easy to complain too. also some people are in denial and dont' want to deal with it. they'd rather pretend everythings ok and laugh at dumb shit.

  • Because shows like this are, difficult to write. In addition, actors of the caliber of a Carroll O'Connor or a Jean Stapleton are,not a dime a dozen. When you set out to write a show like this, you have to strike while the iron is hot;everything has to be there at once and,you have to act quickly. We just don't have the talent pool at this time.

I hope this kind of sheds some light on your question.

  • @alphacause TV sucks today. The networks aren't afraid to show sex and violence anymore, they aren't afraid to write characters that curse, but they sure as hell won't touch any politically or socially controversial subject with a twenty foot pool.

  • Comment removed

  • i agree with mike church shouldnt be forced on any child

  • true but a child should have some sort of moral direction

  • If you're looking for moral direction, the Bible's the last place you should be looking, unless you consider slavery, infanticide, etc. to be moral.

  • The bible is a history book.

  • @kvjhedfbv

    You can't be serious.

I don't doubt that there are some elements that are factual, but much of it is mythologized.

I'd like to read your support for that claim. If you bring up faith, the conversation is over. I can say I have faith in a universe supported by the backs of an infinite number of turtles, but it doesn't make it true.

  • I don't doubt that there are some elements that are factual, but much of it is mythologized.

You can not prove that! LOL

Our history textbooks in schools are mythologized and I can prove it.

Example, women could not vote in the USA until 1920.

    This is false!

Women could vote in certain states before the 19th amendment was passed into law in 1920.

In fact, Jeannette Rankin was a Republican elected to the House of Representatives in 1916.

  • @kvjhedfbv Do you know anything about the history that you talk about? Yes, women could vote according to state rights in local elections. That is true, but the 19th ammendment was not for women's suffrage. It was for UNIVERSAL womens suffrage, so all women in the country could vote, and not just in local elections, but in presidential elections as well. Also, being elected and voting are two separate things. A woman could be elected without voting, DUH! Get your facts straight!

  • @malfunkshunn

Can you explain why Government schools teach kids that women could not vote before 1920 and never mention Republican Jeannette Rankin being elected to the House of Representatives in 1916?

Woman's sufferage has evolved into a sexist war against men and an attempt to rewrite history.

Women should be ashamed of themselves!

  • it ain't about being forced, it's about traning like anything else, The Bible teachs you how to train your kids, they won't be perfect but it gives simple principles to raise Godly young men and women.

  • Are you really that dense? That is indoctrination.

The Bible also teaches you how you should treat your slaves, to kill whole lands of people if their God is different than yours, etc.

  • meathead said god would forgive him and he is right,if he accepts chirst he will be forgiven.

  • yes sir Amen

  • This was really brilliant

  • God love Archie! There is no way a show like this would fly today with all the do gooders we have.

  • we need a show like this today.

  • You are aware that Archie and his bigotry is often the butt of the joke in almost every episode, right?

  • ahaha Archie is so funny he takes things so out of context but He is semi right or right on most things, but fear the Lord means reverence thats the kinds of things he takes out of context, it means respect not be scared but he is hilarious I love this show wish it was still on today

  • I don't know. Have you actually read the Old Testament?

Archie semi right? You have to be fucking kidding me.

  • I am not talking about his Biblical views idiot, I am speaking of his political views on Gun control etc

  • Were you clear about that? No, you weren't. In the context of this episode, it makes sense to assume that religion is what you were speaking of.

  • LOL! =)

  • 4:37 is the best part!

  • Edith was the real star of the show.

  • those jersey accents are on dot

  • @bkakageo The show is set in Queens and that's also where O'Connor is from...

  • I like when Mike told Archie to get out of his chair.

  • I like the Amish way of raising the kids. Beat religion into them til their teenagers then let them go out into the world. The kids usually get strung out on meth or something and their life turns to shit, so they return to the church on their own after hitting rock bottom.

  • that usualy is how they get on meth and all that shit, because they want to rebel against religion. Its just best to let them choose their own paths

  • lol What the hell are you talking about? Did I miss something said in earlier comments?

  • no subject was taboo. this show was one of the best.

  • Archies reaction when Mike gave god the rasberry. Archie : WOW, classic . There will never be another show like this.

  • @kerasea

I laughed until tears ran down my cheeks ... just like when I watched it the first time ... on TV!

  • A pillow of salt! lolll

  • Romans two dots twenty three LOL!!

  • This is why this show was one of the greatsest, way ahead of it's time, t.v. shows today are too afraid to even go near the subject of religion

  • Hahaha The raspberry to god is one of my favorite scenes ever.

  • This is great!

  • Go Archie!!!

  • That is such sharp writing. Why is Gloria dressed as an Austrian peasant? Who knew Meathead would go on to be one of the most respected directors and producers in the business?

  • I think the apron just makes her look that way.

Rob Reiner is great. Have you seen The Bucket List? I saw that last month and thought it rocked, despite it being poorly received by critics.

  • Not seen it yet.

  • @pang00lin LOL all great points

  • LOL, Archies expresiion when Mike went

prrt to the lord. This show was brilliant.

    Brings back memories.

  • love it! always have. this show brought the 60's into the 70's; it helped spread the antiwar movement into households far removed from berkley.

but mr moon beware the dmc frickin a

  • It's interesting that you say that. Wikipedia mentions that CBS ran a disclaimer at the start of the show:

"The program you are about to see is All in the Family. It seeks to throw a humorous spotlight on our frailties, prejudices, and concerns. By making them a source of laughter we hope to show, in a mature fashion, just how absurd they are." Many later shows took their cue from AITF to raise issues in this way.

I liked Archie's line "..defend American shores in all foreign countries" LOL

  • Wow, this is pretty indepth for a sitcom, and racy too for that time. I find it pretty incredible this aired at all.

  • It was very edgy for the 70's. It never aired in Australia while I was growing up, so I've only just started to watch the series, and suddenly understanding many references to the show in later TV shows. I find it interesting that the culture wars of yesteryear are nearly the same as the culture wars of today - same issues (religion, military campaigns, civil rights, economic mismanagement, etc), only difference is in the details.

  • Excellent point! Right and wrong never changes, and human nature never changes (unless God intervenes), and so the cultural issues are basically the same.

  • @DavidtheDuke

Archie Bunker was actually based on a character in a British TV show called Alf Garnett. Archie is not as bad as Alf...

  • Having said that... I still think Archie Bunker is smarter than Geerup!

  • Geerup does make a lot of gaffs, using words inappropriately, just like Archie!

Congratulations on your first child! My sister and my best friend's wife are expecting a child in late August, too. I'll be heading back to Australia to be there for it. The wife and I will probably start trying later this year after I finish my course.

I guess most atheists are the meatheads of their families. I certainly am!

  • Thanks for digging up this clip!

I watched this show as a kid... saw "The Little Atheist" rerun shortly after my brother was getting this grief from our family for not christening his daughter.

And now... I'll be 40 this summer, then my first child will be born in August. The mom and I aren't even married! *gasp!*

I love being "Meat-head" in my family!
