this guy does know the cease fire was because they ran out of food and ammo and they couldn't get out of the city so they cried to there leader like a bitch
Could somebody please tell poor Pepe that 'corps' is pronounced 'core' and not 'corpse'...geeesh. I love the guy...that's why I want him to be provided immediate linguistic assistance.
listen, if your talking about the peace treaty with moqtadas militia. you should know that they are fighting iraqi troops and not america. most of that militia are uneducated drug addicts and criminals from saddams regime. they kill inocent and loot from the people. I am an iraq shia and I think iran should stop supporting the militias. The money is coming from arab countries. and militants use that money to buy weapons from iran.
yeh it really sux i hope thay do stop thats why i'm happy there peace and i really hope on 1 else dies god i would ha8 2 be where u r right now i hope iraq becomes a peacful place where iraqis can be happy
thanks for your sympathy. but people have to know that mahdi army do not represent shia, theyr just a bunch of criminals. but i dont blame the people, i blame the media
BTW, the bombing in karbala in which 7 iranian ilgrims were killed was done by a person who belongs to the mahdi army. the families of the iranian victims are trying to file charges against moqtada while he is in iran. now the iranian government are stopping help for mahdi army and trying to get moqtada out of iran. they finally realized that he and his followers arent that great,
who won the battle of basra? im an iraqi from basra and i'll tell you, the actual battle didnt even start. western people dont get the real news. the battle was not just what you saw. the mission is still on and they have captured hundreds of militants. they are going house to house to search for weapons. the government got support from almost every tribe in basra. now its the the people of basra against criminals. the residents of basra are helping the government against the militants.
I'll share a little story with you and everyone else. These events occurred after the second invasion by the Sadr's Gang in Najaf. My Gramps and uncles run a restaurant in there. The Sad's Gang where chilliin at the "terrace" for a few days and my Gramps and uncles were givin 'em tea for free (although their not supposed to do that, since the place really runs and makes its money by SELLING things and not donating 'em).
In any case, eventually, their numbers increased and they started takin the whole place and they wanted food now. After the various unsuccessful protests by my Gramps to stop my uncles from going and asking Sadr's Gang, politely, to vacate the premises (My grampa was afraid for his sons) since they're affecting business and taking shit 4 free. And so, instead of thanking them for being courteous with them all these days, they grab one of my uncles and take him away threatening to behead him.
YEES Behead him. What FOOOR? Nothing. After various discussions and ransom payments (which also included Badr's involment & threats) they let 'em go. The Sadr's Gang retreated after Ayatollah al Sistani's peace efforts.
OK. I know that someppl join the group for real anti-occupational ideas. But, the Sadr's Gang is generally nothing more but a bunch of thieves, thugs and hooligans who have nothing better to do than pray on the weak. Some1 had to get rid of 'em.
there a bunch of bathist mafia, thats why no one likes them. anyways the final battle is tomorrow or the day after. the deadline for giving up theyr weapons is almost over. Some of my relatives live in basra, i hope theyr gonna be alright. BTW, they did far worse things from you mentioned. before the iraqi forces took over, they would just kill people on the street and no one dares to talk to or about them.
Thanks for your comments, Hamoodi99. For peace and democracy to thrive in the cradle of civilization known today as Iraq, it is very important for the locals to speak out as you are doing. Sooner or later, the U.S. will have to leave, and no doubt it will be seen largly as a thankless sacrifice by those who gave their own lives for your benefit...
...But if, in the end, people like you and your gramps are the ones ruling the day in the lives of ordinary Iraqi citizens, it will still have been a sacrifice worth making. Peace to you and yours.
I sure am used to corporate media. I have to get through tons of bull just to learn a fact or two. It's similar with this report, also. I learned about the Iranian, but what's the crap about "terrorists are peacemakers"? Calling yourself "Real News" is spinning yourself already. I would love to see a small organization like this earn credibility as a straight-facts news source, but this one isn't it. It sounds more like Al-Jazeera.
Its Canadian based and has a very strong anti-US sentiment. Although there does need to be an anti-Rupert Murdoch media source to combat Fox/Sky News, adopting a Chomskyite view like this isn't going to inform the public. Islamic expansionism is a real threat to Western Civilization and the EU and the UN really don't have a clue. Though the US military is being squandered in this misadventure in Iraq, it really is the only faction left to oppose the ultimate attack of Sharia culture.
It's so hard to get the REAL truth. This organization calls itself real news, but I can tell from the get-go they're agenda-driven. Serve the public, media!
It's called the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force (taking it's name for guarding the 1979 Revolution), not Republican Guard(that was the Saddam era Iraqi force). Even though his other points seem right on, with mistakes like that, it makes me think he's not the "expert" he claims to be.
Iran "the evil empire", doesn't seem so evil. Sounds to me like they want peace in Iraq as much as everyone else. I think its time for the Middle East to come together to broker a peace agreement with everyone. The sooner the better and the sooner the troops can come home.
It also shows the limits of the Mahdi Army. as was seen even if the Army could put up stiff resistence they could only last for a short for had the ceasefire hadn't been signed Muqtada's millita might've collapsed. It would also have caught civilians in the crossfire denting the popular support the army had received.
Thats not exactly an accurate analysis because the al-Sadr Mehdi Army is a grassroots militia, not an inherent terrorist force. This is becoming a domestic struggle, and once Iraqis despite the political/ethnic/religious differences unify against foreign inspired terrorist groups like Al Queda in Mesopotamia, the US really needs to get out or it will be cornered into backing factions and have the same results as Mogadishu, leaving Iraq an anarchic non-state like Somalia.
Why not accurate? Escobar is not saying the Sadrists are terrorists. The only problem lies in the control he has over the Mahdi army, which isn't a very centralised group, rather a bunch of differently constructed militias. Sadr may have trouble putting the ceasefire into practice.
This is already a domestic struggle. Iraqis most probably won't unite against Al-Qaeda, for it is not much to worry about. If they ever unite, it will be to push out the US' troops. Let's see what the election shows.
Yes, let's wait for the 2009 Iraqi elections. Sadr for President 2008. *eh hem chile eh hem nicaragua, guatemala etc.* Of course Iraq is free! They are free to elect a democratic leader who we will depose and replace with another Saddam Hussein! War is Peace! Freedom is Slavery! Ignorance is strength!
Well, of course the US will probably be be able to depose any new government. But, as I see it, the Administration will try to get out of the way of their friends in Baghdad, if there are such friends. Because if they mess up the government even more, they'll feed the resistance very much.
I can see the importance of current development and I don't mean that the election is the sole thing that matters. In this regard I only replied to the previous commenter, who employed a long-term view.
If you listen at the end of the analysis Escobar says the "terrorists [obvious emphasis that they are not] brought peace" implying the Mahdi army is viewed as a terrorist organization. Considering the IRA did not make the international terrorist list, there is no reason to consider the Mahdi army such a group either. Its a Shi'ite sect based on a denominational interpretation of Fedayeen theology that supports Sadr's view of Islam, the Sunnis and Kurds would take issue with their dominance.
Ideally a Biden type confederacy would alleviate these internicene tensions, but Michael Scheuer's astute analysis of the Islamic world view makes it evident the Iraqis really aren't ready for democracy. They view the neighborhood barriers as a West Bank type apartheid wall for Shi'a dominance over the minority groups, and the US occupation, though well intentioned, is damaging Iraq's long term prospects because of their unique Sharia view of legal equanimity. Get Al-Queda out and then leave.
why is Iran so powerful in this matter? I understand they have an army and oil revenues but what is their real strength vis a vis the US? Is it the fact that they are Shiite?
It is the fact that they are present in the area. They can directly support any of the side with money, weapons and they are quite independent in the matter.
You see, it's not that Iran is so powerful. But the other states around are so weak and unwilling to take part.
