@InferiorThanYou I've ridden into yards. It's not too bad you just have to climb over several strings of cars to get out o the yard most times. Sleeping bag, pack, food & water plus some other essentials is all you really need. You can get a rail atlas for the lines online and there is plenty of train knowledge out there via the Internet.

@JOhnwjpayne I live in Portland Oregon, and I want to travel by train. What do you recommend for knowing train routes? Any sources to find that information? What do you do before the train goes into the yard, do you just jump out? You just bring a backpack and sleeping bag and travel? I'm very interested in trying this.
