I remember watching this a few year ago. It's definitely been one of my life goals to drive the Dempster ever since. I feel like I could write a whole novel based on my experiences up there.
I've just bought a similar beat up vanagon lol planning on similar trip. Do you think these vans can handle the distance and the roads? What mods you think I should do? Thx for the video btway!
@TheVdubFire Of course these vans can go the distance as long as you are alway$ prepared to buy a one way ticket home ; ) Seriously my 83 camper is stock outside of spending an extra $1300 on strong tires and it has made it up the Dempster 3 times. (I work in Inuvik) Every fall when the temps drop to -25 and the gearbox seizes I ship it down to Kamloops in the back of a semi so she's good to go for next summers trip up.
theres also fort mcpherson, aswell as inuvik. eagle lodge isnt a town, its a lodge.
its great to hitchike, perfectly safe, safer than most places. i met a man who walked the whole dempster, pulling a trolly with his belongings behind him. cool.
I did the trip summer of 2009. I went during the summer solstice when the sun was out 24 hours north of the arctic circle. It was safe and amazing. If you don't want to ride all the way up there, I recommend renting an SUV out of Whitehorse or using Go North.com out of Anchorage. Go North allows unpaved travel. There are actually 2 gas stops along the way. The first is about half way point (Eagle Plains), the second one is 3/4ths of the way up (Fort McPherson).
Wow leaving in a few days for the dempster. Lost my job last week and I was actually excited because I really wanted to do this. Leaving from Golden BC!
How far is it between gas stations up there? I mean if I was to do something like that I would obviously carry a few extra gas containters. Im just curious
There is a station at the halfway point 356Km in so no need to bring extra gas. I wasn't sure about the tank in my bus but it was large enough after all.
@polardiscoball Also, I would assume that diesel would be available at the gas station as well? What do you know about driving up there during the winter months? I was thinking of driving up there during the winter in a few years. But of course I dont want my vehicle to freeze. Lol
Brilliant film and what looks like an amazing journey. I've been asked if i'd like to be part of a small team to film and walk the Dempster to raise money for Great Ormond St Hospital in London. I think I will be okay with the walking bit, it's the bears that worry me ever so slighlty. In fact I'm shit scared! It would be an amazing achievement and a yarn and a half to tell the grandkids. Anyways well done again on the vid....
If you walk it in the fall which is the most beautiful time to see the colours you will find the bears are more interested in the berries than you! ; )
@grosenestrie Pretty remote area so your best bet is to just rent a truck in Whitehorse for the week and drive it both ways. I suggest mid to end September to see all the fall colours. Def worth the money.
Thanks for posting such a great video. I just finished a trip from Calgary to Kluane and wanted to know what the Dempster was like. I have to say, your video...was a real pleasure to watch. Thanks for the inspiration.
If you are interested in the adventure I invite you to buy/rent the VW and drive down to Vancouver during the fall when these beautiful colours come out.
I'll be doing the Dempster this summer also. You will get 24 hour sunshine north of the Arctic Circle portion of the highway and you will get bright twilight the entire Dempster Highway IF you go in June and most of July, close to the solstice which is June 21st.
I watched your video back in November of 07. Ever since then ive been dreaming of driving from Vancouver to Inuvik. This summer im taking the drive. I just wanna say thank you for the inspiration. Also, how is sleeping on the dempster ? I plan on driving in my Truck with Camper. Does the sun go down at all ? and are there any pullouts ? Thank you once again.
Plenty of pullouts and my fav is the one in the video on the rock cliff with a good view of the road. It is a few KM after filling up at eagle plains which has a campground with elec, water services and showers. The road gets difficult if it has rained for a week so keep an eye on the weather and talk to people that are on their way down the road to get a heads up on conditions. Enjoy and keep it slow on the blind corners.
Everytime I miss my trips on the Dempster, I watch this video. I will be making the Dempster trip again this Summer 09. I'd like to drive from Santa Barbara to Inuvik, then over to Anchorage and fly back. Anyone want to drive my car back from Anchorage to Santa Barbara?
Why its a bag of "Hello Panda" Chocolate filled Koala bears from Singapore... what other snack could possibly be as comforting while driving above the arctic circle.
I have enjoyed the Dempster several times. May I suggest you travel the road from Walliams Lake to Bella Coola in BC. I have a video of it on my channel.
I'm not really sure, but I think youtube looks at videos and chooses a bunch that are genuinely good (good footage, editing, music etc.) I think this video matches those standards.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. Great job on the video. Traveling along the Yukon and NWT has been one of my car ride dreams. But to make it very challenging, I want to traveling in a tiny car like a Chevy Aveo or Honda Fit.
Almost did the Dempster last year.. and this year.. did all the other NWT highways this year... look forward to doing the Dempster next year... thanks for the great video...
When I heard you had 4 new tires and one new spare, I laughed and thought, "oh, this is gonna be good" ... but I guess either the road has improved, or you picked the right time of year. Truckin the Dempster ... It's the ragged ass road !!
Wait wait, what is going on here? Great scenery, good footage, excellent editing, nice people, good appropriate music, is this... no... it can't be, is this... a genuinely good video on youtube? Well, this throws my whole world upside-down. Great stuff :)
Cool video
