I think he misses the point with better schools, I believe all that is really needed are good teachers, as a student I have seen first hand what a bad teacher can do to good equipment. Some of our good teachers were hired away and replaced by crap ones. Between the teachers they had the same facilities at their disposal, But the difference was in the teacher. Also over specific rules and drug dogs going around school doesn't help school spirit, it makes it seem like us vs them not a community.
Without the help of parents, kids can't reach the excellence that should be right at their fingertips. We can't expect an idea like this. We need to repair the American Family, and I don't think a legislative bill can do that.
I honestly think the change must come from people like me, with my growing family, who can make individual choices to strengthen the family. I am the father who can put my kids in a position where excellence is the norm. I am the one who can take responsibility for the next generation. I think Obama should challenge all American parents to do the same.
Many American families have fathers who are addicted to pornography, or who just don't give their kids the needed discipline, guidance or support. At the same time they have mothers who have to work full time to meet the rent, or who are maybe a little too worried about the media's presentation of what their bodies should look like, etc. The list is too expansive for a short post, but there exists a general weakness to our families that cannot be fully compensated by a good teacher.
I think the statement about teachers being most responsible for a child's success glosses over a flaw larger than our current education system. The biggest flaw of American education (elementary and secondary) is the American family behind it all. Our families have degenerated so much since the mentioned 'golden age'. Parents no longer accept the responsibility for their individual children to see that they are learning the most that they possibly can.
Obama's done his homework! Research does show teacher's are the main influence on a child's progress educationally. Good to hear the administration is going to respect and support them.

Some of you argue that graduation for all should not be a goal because it's not going to happen? Really? And what, we should leave it that way? Education is the key to the future. Anything we have to do to push ourselves to achieve with pay off in the future. We aren't living in a bubble... we are competing with the rest of the world. I am so all about reform but to take the stance that all children should be prepared for college is stupid. Not all kids will make it, not all will want to go. We need to encourage kids to also go to trade schools and tech schools, there is nothing wrong with either and for too long there has been a stigma that to go to these schools meant you were one of the dumb kids. Lets change that!
The problem isn't so much the teachers. It's the students. If they were interested in learning and making an effort, they would do so. Unfortunately, people are becoming satisfied to be nothing.
Better early childhood education can make a difference in a young students attitude about education. It can give them the tools, and confidence they need to perform, and want to compete. Further, a better funded, and more comprehensive education system can go a long way towards helping the individual student, rather than allowing him to fall behind.
Mr. President let's also not forget improvement to vocational and trade schools. Our nation needs its hard working laborers and blue collar workers as much as we need the competitive edge of higher-educated white collar workers. All our workers are important and improving the quality of all education, including those of tradesmen and laborers, is important too!

The new deal didn't do anything to get the US out of the Great Depression. If anything it just pushed us further into the depression. This is borne out by the fact that in 1936 the small increase prompted by the New Deal caused a second dip in the economy which pushed the economy further down than it had been previously. Private incentives, like using parents wishes, are a much better way of improving education and everything else in the economy, not goverment handouts.

All subjects have equal value in them. Our country is the way it is people fighting over which is more important... I'm lucky to be of the last generation to be educated in a era which all subjects were treated as if they were all important and no FCAT. Lets' not jeopardize one subject because we want to improve in another. Lets not take PE away because we want more reading. This is why obesity is on the rise. Read/Math at home to improve. All subjects have value and make up a healthy society.
Yes education needs to change, but as long as the top priorities of it is focus on just exams and not actual learning, we would never see any real differences. I, of course, could only speak for myself on this matter in that as a student I succeed more with portfolio assessments than these pencil/paper exams that don't really help all it. Sorry for the double posting youtube is acting out lately. Anyways we need to really teach our students the things they need to have a successful education at college. Some professors still use pencil/paper exams but a lot of them are revolting from that and are using alternative assessments to see if their students can actually, not only know the material/subject, but implement, apply & use that knowledge. Teachers, especially high school, need to start teaching and stop these retarded exams.
Yes education needs to change, but as long as the top priorities of it is focus on just exams and not actual learning, we would never see any real differences. I, of course, could only speak for myself on this matter in that as a student I succeed more with portfolio assessments than these pencil/paper exams that don't really help all it. I think he misses the point with better schools, I believe all that is really needed are good teachers, as a student I have seen first hand what a bad teacher can do to good equipment. Some of our good teachers were hired away and replaced by crap ones. Between the teachers they had the same facilities at their disposal, But the difference was in the teacher. Also over specific rules and drug dogs going around school doesn't help school spirit, it makes it seem like us vs them not a community.

Many American families have fathers who are addicted to pornography, or who just don't give their kids the needed discipline, guidance or support. At the same time they have mothers who have to work full time to meet the rent, or who are maybe a little too worried about the media's presentation of what their bodies should look like, etc. The list is too expansive for a short post, but there exists a general weakness to our families that cannot be fully compensated by a good teacher.

I think the statement about teachers being most responsible for a child's success glosses over a flaw larger than our current education system. The biggest flaw of American education (elementary and secondary) is the American family behind it all. Our families have degenerated so much since the mentioned 'golden age'. Parents no longer accept the responsibility for their individual children to see that they are learning the most that they possibly can.

@hobo59 You need a 2/3 majority to over ride any current law and/or veto. Plus, Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution stipulates that only 1/3 of the Senate is up for re-election every years. Republicans would have to defend every seat they currently hold plus win every seat that is up for election by a Democrat and even then they wouldn't get a 61 vote majority. You'll have to wait till 2012 for even a chance to do any of that. Uh-oh, your ignorance is showing.

I believe any reform MUST include parents somehow. Television/movies are raising our children. Parents must be held accountable for lack of student preparation in learning. An idea!! Since teachers are basically a babysitting service to many parents, let's charge them an hourly fee!

I have a "very active" 8 year old with a wild imagination.. YES he is a handful.. but at his old school the teachers are GREAT and worked with him in ways that helped him progress

parents are good amount of the problem. but it's not always so cut and dry. recognition of the work lives of parents should also be taken into account. the strained work lives of family heads living paycheck to paycheck barely putting food on the table compounds this area of the problem.
i hope your one of the teachers truly educating
state and federal educational funding has also dropped considerably over the last 30 years for k-12 and higher ed. The results of this are finally showing.

Forget the bickering and the antiantibipartisainship and just watch the video. How is "we should better prepare our kids to be successful" partisan in any way? Our education system hasn't changed in any significant way since the 50s, while our technology has exploded since then. (For example, we have color TVs now.) I'm relieved that it's finally getting some attention, instead of being swept under the rug as a nice platform note.

I am so all about reform but to take the stance that all children should be prepared for college is stupid. Not all kids will make it, not all will want to go. We need to encourage kids to also go to trade schools and tech schools, there is nothing wrong with either and for too long there has been a stigma that to go to these schools meant you were one of the dumb kids. Lets change that!

Better early childhood education can make a difference in a young students attitude about education. It can give them the tools, and confidence they need to perform, and want to compete. Further, a better funded, and more comprehensive education system can go a long way towards helping the individual student, rather than allowing him to fall behind.

we need to listen to this message and step up... we need to keep our children competative with children in the rest of the world. our children need to learn 2-3 languages and science and math. closed minded parents produce children that are unable to be students of the world. thinking that our children are superior and don't need to work as hard, are delusional. feed your kids healthy food if you can find some, and keep them learning. it is their best fuel for success.

It was President Eisenhower -- a Republican -- who first got the Federal Government involved in education by creating the National Science Foundation to provide funds and encourage development in Math and Science.
It was President Bush -- another Republican -- who tied funding directly to test scores, thus more deeply involving the Federal Gov't in education. This trend is not new to Obama, please don't pretend that it is.

All I'm saying is, GET THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OUT OF EDUCATION. It's that simple. Education would still exist, based upon a sound and just foundation if government force is removed from the equation. Teachers would make more, the needs of students would be better served, and freedom would reign. Also, the people who have no direct stake in the education of the citizens (IE. have no children) would not be FORCED to pay for those who do. You all advocate tyranny and force = this is Socialism!

FDR was criticized because that also resembled socialism (far more than anything that Obama has done). regardless of the propaganda that you have been lead to believe, the only way we are going to make it out of the recession (or improve our schools) is with some help from the government.

I believe, we're still paying the price for that Socialism generations later. Many of FDR's advisors were sent to the Soviet Union and became enamored with Socialism because they believed the lies the Soviets told them. Where is the Soviet Union now, oh, proponents of Collectivism/Statism? Harry Hopkins is a perfect example. Do you ALL think that education would somehow not exist if the Fed Gov weren't involved? Of course it would and it did! Parents' desire to see their children educated would produce the natural outcome of systems, schools, teachers, programs, etc. It has nothing to do with government! It is a natural, inherent, intrinsic thing for parents to educate their offspring. It is a natural human characteristic for those to help children who's parents drop the ball.

The new deal didn't do anything to get the US out of the Great Depression. If anything it just pushed us further into the depression. This is borne out by the fact that in 1936 the small increase prompted by the New Deal caused a second dip in the economy which pushed the economy further down than it had been previously. Private incentives, like using parents wishes, are a much better way of improving education and everything else in the economy, not goverment handouts.

All subjects have equal value in them. Our country is the way it is people fighting over which is more important... I'm lucky to be of the last generation to be educated in a era which all subjects were treated as if they were all important and no FCAT. Lets' not jeopardize one subject because we want to improve in another. Lets not take PE away because we want more reading. This is why obesity is on the rise. Read/Math at home to improve. All subjects have value and make up a healthy society.

Yes education needs to change, but as long as the top priorities of it is focus on just exams and not actual learning, we would never see any real differences. I, of course, could only speak for myself on this matter in that as a student I succeed more with portfolio assessments than these pencil/paper exams that don't really help all it. Think about it.... it's stronger and more impressive for a student to conduct a presentation/portfolio than to bubble in answers like a trained monkey....

Sorry for the double posting youtube is acting out lately. Anyways we need to really teach our students the things they need to have a successful education at college. Some professors still use pencil/paper exams but a lot of them are revolting from that and are using alternative assessments to see if their students can actually, not only know the material/subject, but implement, apply & use that knowledge. Teachers, especially high school, need to start teaching and stop these retarded exams.
