On 7th July 2008, when on holiday in Teesdale, my wife & I visited the "Head of Steam", the railway museum in Darlington. From the car park, I took photos of a 'strange' loco on the track behind. It was this loco in its workshop livery. From the last frame in the video it looks as though it had not moved since. As I do not own a camcorder, yet, it is nice to see it move.
No its a totally different class of locomotive. Scotsman was an A1 when built but the lner changed the names of the classes so scotsman became A3 and the class tornado is being built to A1
I would LOVE to see a come-back of steam. It would be fantastic! If the keep on building these beauties i would be awesome to see them actuly be put to use for proper passanger and freight services.
Well,well,well..A brand new steam locomotive..it brings a glimmer of hope to these sad old eyes to know that somebody out there is actually building new locos..aptly named too..perhaps she will cause a storm when she is totally completed,,what will be her livery I wonder..thanks for trhis great footage, and I for one will be following Tornado closely!!
I look forward to seeing and hearing more about Tornado, Who would have thought it? A new steam locomotive in the 21st century? Here's cheers from Australia! :-)
20 million to get a Vulcan in the air!!!!! I know what id prefer.... what a bargain...how "CHEAP" was this NOW ? I knew you could do it lads. What an achievment. You showed the sceptics didnt you...I would be ordering 100 of these beautys BRITISH (so called)GOVERNMENT...instead of running around like headless chickens during this petrol crisis and forgetting it can happen again ha ha !....
This class A1 Tornado is a perfect recreation of the A1 class. I remember reading about it last year and I am glad to see it up and running :) The guys that built this did an excellent job!
After running in at the gcr she is getting painted lner apple green. The plan then is every 2 years to paint her in a different livery that the a1's carried. I think its br blue next.
Its a shame that I'm in the US, and unable to see Tornado! Looks amazing! Am I the only one who, if had won the lottery, would use the money on a steam locomotive! :P
It seemed an impossible challenge at the start, but looking at her now, £2.9M actually seems cheap for such an impressive machine. I can't wait to see her painted up and working for a living!
As a much younger man I worked on locos from Barry scrapyard restoring them to working order. We never thought that we would see a new mainline steam locomotive again. This is a fantastic achievement for the tenacious group who never gave up, and shows that spirited and independent people have not been bureaucratised out of existence in this risk-averse country. What a wonderful, historic and very British thing to have done..it wouldn't have happened anywhere else..and now for the next one???
What an amazing achievement for all those people who put there hart and soul in to creating a dream. Proof if anything that we can still be world engineering leaders. And I believe it is set up for modern main line running requirements so we should see a lot of her :)
There was talk of building a new steam engine with modern technology that would have been more efficient and economical that todays modern diesels I wonder what ever happened to that idea?
This is a wonderful achievement for all those who contributed and built (from scratch) the first main line steam locomotive in nearly fifty years - who knows we might build some more A1/A2/A3/A4 to make up the numbers (compared to preserved express steam engines from the other big four companies. Well done Darlington!
I've often thought that would be a neat idea. I think there was talk of doing that with the one at Swanage, I can't remember which one it is now, I'm sure someone will know, but it was put on ice for financial reasons, probably. Would be interesting.
(N.B. I was replying to a comment earlier about a prospective un-rebuiling of a Merchant Navy, in case this seems a little obscure. The reply function seems inconsistent here.)
I will be uploading videos from yesterday today and tomorrow(when i film them of course) when i get chance and she has been running with them open all the time.
Wonderful,An outstanding achievement.Such a shame that there are always the dim-witted fools who insist on posting their ridiculous comments when they have not the slightest grasp on what is involved with a project of this magnitude.
Well done to all concerned, this engine is a masterpiece, and anyone who doesn't appreciate this magnificent machine should, in my opinion, be shot.
Congrats to the A1 trust and all involved with Her. Bring the Ultimte Gathering: Tornado, Mallard and Co, Scotty, Blue Peeter, Green Arrow and the other LNER locos. Truly Magnificent
What a beast. Well done to all concerned - I honestly thought it couldn't and wouldn't be done.
And to think every bit is brand new - no worrying about rust, dodgy previous repairs and layers of porridge oats hiding microcracks in the boiler. This baby is going to last.
Back in the late 80's I joined as a covenantor at the age of 11, It's amazing to see it in steam and having not seen an A1 previously I have to admit to being in awe, congratulations to all involved.
If it was such a waste of time and effort then why did the press turn up in their hundreds today, and most of darlington as well. I know how hard it is just restoring these brilliant machines*, never mind building a new one. If anyone else out there is thinking of putting up stupid comments like this don't bother, you will be blocked just like hstlover here.
incredible outcome to a long construction, this loco is simpley stunning. she'll do her owners proud :D i want to see her double heading with an A3 or A4 now tho :D

Yes - let's re-build an "as built" Merchant Navy. Not one of these magnificent Bulleid beasts survived in an un rebuilt state.
Lets name her 35007 Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line - owners of what became the legendary HMS Jervis Bay.
