  • That shrinkage boy is a real b*tch.

  • Omg I have been scrolling all around trying to find some new ways to deal with my hair and your channel is always so great! Thanks a bunch!!

  • Thank you for this. I wish I could have seen this 2 years ago but I'm sure it's helped a lot of people out there with natural hair.

  • don't feel bad some girls detangle for two hours and that's just one side

  • LOVE this video. I wouldn't say my curl pattern was really tight, but I have mighty, mighty shrinkage like you! :D

  • I just started watching your videos, and they are awesome...I will be starting my natral journey soon and your videos have inspired me even more.....THanks for uploading.....

  • its amazing hair

  • @Dizzydazl my thoughts exactly!!! Thank you SOOO much for this video!

  • Thanks for all the tips, my little sister does wear her hair natural, sometimes my mom have to use a hot comb to make it straight; because she doesn't want to use a relaxer for now.

  • I have learned the hard way that I must detangle then put in braids to wash my hair..I condition in the same braids and when I am ready to apply leave in, my hair very easy to go through again. My hair, like yours is very tightly coiled and I have in breakage is inevitable if my hair is kept in a shrunken state. Wash n go's have not worked for me in the past. good tips. x

  • THANK YOU!!!!! Me and my daughter both have the same hair type as yourself and constantly are suffering from breakage. We are definitely trying your method to reduce the breakage during washing.

  • Thank you for this video. I agree with everything that you say because my isn't your length yet but it is on it's way. Thank you once again!!!

  • Your hair looks so thick and healthy. How long have you been natural.

  • I know just what you mean about keeping the hair stretched. I love to see my hair in its beautiful soft “tree” state lol but I don’t dare out of fear of detangling! Great job – thanks for posting these!

  • I will try your techniques! Thanks :)

  • i totally feel you on what you're sayin. i have long hair, and i hardly wear my hair in an afro. i keep my hair in twists the majority of the time. i rarely wear it out. i gets soooo tangled when i wear an afro. so i just wash and put it back in twists. LOL

  • Shrinkage is a beast :) but i love the versatility of black hair, i have natural hair too and was explaining to a Filipino friend of mine how my hair (when straight reaches APL) shrinks into a small afro when i wash it, she was in complete awe, like i was performing a major trick! LOL!

  • How do you style your hair without always having to use combs or brushes?

  • @mochaCUTEE My go to styles are twists and twist outs. I styles my twist in various ways. I also like wearing my loose hair up in pinned up/updo styles. I can usually go several days w/o redoing those styles and just finger combing and smoothing as needed. I know some people hate protective styles but I wore them when I wasn't trying to grow my hair out because I like being able to get up and go.

  • not your shrinkage personally, but I guess the way it changes our perception of our hair. It is just a part of having naturally curly hair. and btw I think your hair is beautiful. My shrinkage... welllll that is another story.

  • @jadar47 I only hate shrinkage because (apart from those of us who know otherwise) it's hard for people to perceive the real length of my hair. Even in five years my hair will still sit around my shoulders in its shrunken state, and in ten years it'll be a bit lower than my armpit. Frustrating! At the same time it looks really cool because no other race of hair does this the way black hair does. So in a way it makes me feel "special".

  • Oh Yeah ! Shrinkage is UUUUUggggggly!LOL!

  • @jadar47 I don't think my shrinkage is ugly at all; I like my natural texture. It is just difficult to detangle when I let it shrink all the way.

  • Your Vids are great how often do you post. We have similar hair if you have a second, check out my vids. How long does it take you do wash, detangle, etc on average. I have a small baby and need to to come up with a gentle yet good routine.Keep posting, u will be a big help to many people. Thanks

  • @trnholmes I don't have a set posting schedule. This is my hobby and I have 2 jobs right now so I don't want it to become a stressful thing. I've been averaging about 1 a week. I know I have 1 vid I'm trying to finish before Christmas than I prob won't post until after new years.

  • can you do a hair intro video Outlining ur journey? luv ur hair

  • @thenappylicious1 I've been trying to get one done but all of my old photos are hardcopies and I don't have a scanner. This is why I haven't finished it.

  • cont'd

My question is, "How can I prevent this from happening again?" I'd LOVE to have hair like yours or even BSL when natural and maybe even maintain some of my relaxed ends so I can attain some length but health comes first and in order to keep my ends healthy, I gotta keep away split ends. So how do I prevent them? By the way, I LOVE your hair. How long did it take you to get to that length? and I'm having trouble knowing what my hair likes and dislikes, how do I find this out? TIA, Nat.

  • @imcrazy534 I'm working on a vid on creating your own regimen which may help. You really just have to try different products and techniques. It's helpful to get comfortable w/knowing what your hair feels like w/o product then trying different things to tell if it feels moisturized or not. My current length is about 5 years worth of growth.

  • Is the website working? I tried the URL and it came up blank saying something about a future website. Anyways, I'm currently almost a year into my transition (10 months on the 28th) and I want to chop at the 1year and 6month mark. Problem is, I cut my hair from CBL to FNL because I was experimenting with braids as a PS and I even though I moisturized, the protein balance was off, hence breakage and splits. My relaxed ends were still fairly thick but I cut it myself so it wouldn't harm the NG.

  • @imcrazy534 No, the site is not up yet.

  • @NaturalHairGrowth101

    Oh. lol

  • Why am I just finding you. Yeah breakage from air drying is no joke. Also I find that my hair is extra dry if I dry it open.

  • Thanx soooo much for showing the shrinkage! I know that even us naturals tend to question the texture of other naturals hair when it's in a stretched state. Showing the shrinkage reassures us naturals with the same hair type that we can hopefully learn from, be encouraged by, and/or hopefully pick up tips that are realistic for our own hair type. Last and not least, I see u found the jumbo comb. I luv luv luv that thing! So glad I found u! Thanx again!!!

  • Thanks for showing that shrunken section. Now I see that you have hair like me and I believe moreso that one day I can acheive great length and health. You have a new subscriber. Thank you so much! :)

  • Hi Lala! Your hair is just amazing, and I appreciate you taking the time to post this helpful video. I know what you mean about shrinkage too. My hair is approaching WL in the back but it still sits on my neck. I never leave my hair loose in its unstretched state because that is just asking for trouble. People who say it takes 4-5 to detangle their hair are doing something wrong. Keep up the good work!!! Hugs!

  • Wow, I wish I could have seen this video a few years ago - I hated how long it took to detangle my hair, especially when it would tangle up again as it dried...couldn't figure out why I had constant breakage....It never occurred to me that it was from leaving my hair loose......always thought it was the wrong product or wrong tool. Good video!

  • Girl if you had not showed that your hair actually shrink that much, I would not have believed you. Oh my goodness. My hair is still very short and it is soft so I really do not have a lot of problems with detangling and rarely have to comb it out, however, with my daughter's hair who is transisting and has more hair, I am careful with detangling. I recently purchase a knockoff deman brush from kimmaytube (luvsnatural) to assist with the detangling process. Thank you for sharing. Great video.

  • @JayeJaye714 Girl shrinkage is no joke. Now I personally hate the denman, I get splits from it. I hope it works for you though, just be careful w/it. I am new to youtube and I've seen posts on the boards about luvsnatural. I should check out her channel more. I've only seen a short clip of a couple vids posted on boards. Was the brush good quality, I need some new hair tools.

  • @NaturalHairGrowth101 I wanted to purchase the real denman, however, I could not afford one because I have not worked in over two years. I saw Kimmaytube doing a wash and conditioner where she mention using a knock off denman. She sells them on her website LuvNaturals and it is about $6.00. It is a pretty good quality brush for the cost and it is a Goodys. I am going to order a second one to use exclusively for my daughter's hair. Kimmaytube does some great videos as well.

  • I really like your videos. What did you do when your hair was shorter? My hair is longer than a TWA, but its hard for me to do 4 or even 6 loose braids. Any suggestions?

  • i feel you on the whole shrinking hair thing .....like my hair shrivels up and gets REALY tangled////

  • YOUR HAIR IS FREAKIN BEAUTIFUL! LOL I JUST HAD TO COMMENT!

  • @babycaressa Thanks

  • LOL!!! Shrinkage is the enemy and it aint no joke! You have taught me sooo much about how to care for longer natural hair! I keep my hair twisted now because its too short to put big braids in daily. I can't wait until I am closer to this stage.....

  • 3:15 Shrinkage at its best (had to give a reference point, Lala)!

  • Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for taking the risk and letting us see your hair shrunken! As a type 4 girl, I feel like nobodies hair shrinks up more than mine lol. When I see ladies who say they're a 4 but their hair is always "hanging" it's a bit disillusioning. My question is this: what do you do to fight shrinkage once your hair is stretched and loose? Do you use gel in your braid-outs? Humidity is such an issue in warmer months and my braid-outs only last for a couple of hours at the most.

  • @DevanityBlog I rebraid or twist my hair each night. I also think using shea butter really helps to keep my hair stretched. If I want a longer lasting braid out or twist out I like IC fantasia gel but I still apply oil or butter on top. Gel alone tends to make my hair shrink up. Also w/length the shrinkage tends to look like less just because the hai ris longer. I also don't use alot of glycerin based products, they tend to make my hair shrink more and look fuzzy.

  • Ms Lala I am soo glad you have a channel on youtube now. On LHCF, I read that you had a channel but I couldn't find it..lol! I"m glad you finally posted it! Now your washing day videos were excellent; very helpful and informative. You seem like a pro already...lol! THANK YOU! I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos:)!

  • @NixxNine THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi Lala. I didn't catch the name of the conditioner you use. I tried to rewind, but couldn't understand. Would you mind telling me?

  • @mscoilsandcurls In this vid I used Hairveda Moist 24/7. It's not the only conditioner I use but it's one of my favorites.

  • I look frwd to future vids! What r the styles in ur intro (could u put them in your upcoming hair style vid that u mentioned).

  • @Virtuenow In the intro I'm wear 2-strand twists, a twist out, a flat twist w/puff, and fro. That's a great idea to show how to do the styles. Is there one in particular you would like to see?

  • @NaturalHairGrowth101 Yes, the 1st pony tail (how did you do that, is it the result of a w-n-g or small twists or?); and the style right after that. Very pretty

  • @Virtuenow Ok I will do vids on both of those. I do not do wash and goes.

  • HEY LALA it's Mook from LHCF & fotki. I so deeply enjoyed this video. And never realized that we were strongly hair twins. I can relate to the crazy shrinkage. and I am taking notes on your tips. I am approaching APL straightened and I have made the mistake of airdrying too frequently (loose) resulting in splits and causing me to trim.

This winter I plan to straighten my hair once a month While there is no humidity in the air.

  • @ladyair22 I have always admired your hair. I'm curious about the airdrying causing splits though. What do you put on it while it is drying?

  • Wow, I think we may be shrinkage twins! I follow your fotki & lhcf & I thought your texture was pretty loose. Girl, nevermind, now I can really relate to you! I'm 85-90%. Thanks for taking the risk just to show us the tight coiled, high shrinking ladies can get to bsl and beyond!

  • GIRL! I will never complain about my shrinkage again! Waist length and it shrinks up like that? Wow, even I would not have thought that was even possible! Anyway, I'm subbin', I have coils like you, thickness and all.

  • @mommyanme Girl this shrinkage is not a joke. I did a wash n go one day and paid the price for it. It was a detangling nightmare. I use my shrinkage to my advantage to get different looks but I never let it shrink up all the way like that.

  • I understand NappyRina. Can you message me on fotki so I can check out your pics and give you more specific advice. I will do a Q&A vid in response to your question though. You are not the only one who has asked me this. How long is it taking you to wash? I want to get an idea of what you think is long.

  • @NaturalHairGrowth101, please give met ips on my wash/detangling technique to get down to a reasonable time. Right now, I wash in sections (separate in 4 sections lk yours, then split those into 4, so a total of 16 twists). I'm btw apl and bsl. I have been stuck at this apl-ish length for about a year (similar to your mbl hump). For the past year, I tried dry detangling before my washes, and it took about 4 hours. Now I'm conditioner detangling after my wash, and it takes abt 2-3 hrs.

  • @Virtuenow 16 sections is alot! Have you tried cutting it down to 4 sections. ALso what do you mean by dry detangling? Is there no product on your hair at all. I could never do that. I load my hair up with conditioner. You may need to add some water to your hair. I keep my hair stretched at all times which really cuts down on my detangling time. I am going to do a video on ways to stretch the hair and videos on non-shrunken styles. It can also depend on the products you are using.

  • @NaturalHairGrowth101 I do dry finger detangling with no product. That way I can work out the tiny knots and kinks. Its alot of work, so now I'm exploring wet detangling for the first time. I could cut down to maybe six total sections. But to do 4sections I need to be longer! The comb glides thru my hair when its wet (with exception to knots). I recently learned that I need to add melted concotion of oils & buttrs into my conditioner in order for it to be effective.

  • So refreshing to see someone w/ tightly coiled/dense hair on YouTube (rare) - I'm an old fotki fan of yours and I hope that your channel becomes popular-these tips will help so many- my hair is much shorter than yours & I have to put my hair into more than 4 sections and this makes my wash process VERY time consuming- when I give up and wash all of my hair loose to speed up the process I suffer intense breakage later on-could you do a video about your regimen when your hair was mid-length?

  • Yeah my shrinkage is noooooooooo joke. I'm glad the tips were helpful. I think I'm going to show 1 more hair washing technique. I think alot of women experience the most breakage on wash days which is why I am spending so much time on it.

  • Thanks so much for this hair washing series. I just finished washing my hair following your instructions and I was able to minimize tangling and shrinkage, which as you said will ultimately minimize breakage. I also liked that I was able to divide my hair routine into parts vs. feeling like I was racing to get it done before it dried. I'm looking forward to more tips on accomplishing greater length and more manageable hair!

  • Girl that shrunkage is off the chain!! Wow. I agree with taking the time to detangle and do all the prep in the beginning. I'm not even 100% natural yet and I can already see the benefits. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful hair girl!
