  • That is a very nice work. I have experimented some ideas similar to these too. If you Google "R e l a t e d t o W i n d E n e r g y : By J. Manuel Feliz-Teixeira" you will find a lot about wind energy, and several videos and articles. Keep the good work! It is a pity only strong winds are interesting for producing some energy...

  • Very good, I like the your idea. It has much room for improvement but still great idea and I look for more videos from you, thank you.

  • Thank you for posting this. I thought I was the worst mechanical engineer in the world, but using a cable lengthwise as a drive shaft: WOW!

if the wheel gets stuck the cable will twist up and rip the spokes right out of that wheel! :^)

I admire the spirit of your projects, but the implementation needs work.

  • Neat!! but the video is a bit short

  • cool....i am gonna try it at home!!!!!!!!

  • how many volt and amp are you getting out of this?

  • The generator was getting 18V at 60 RPM. I'm currently building a new one that should do better. The magnets were too small compared to the coils. I'm going to try a generator design that is closer to the WindSpire design. I'm also planning to work on an integrated inverter so that the output can plug directly into the power box, similar to the WindSpire solution. The goal is to design something that will operate at much lower wind speeds so that the average home can make use of it.

  • Im interested in the turbine itself. What materials are you using in the wings?

  • Just some clear heavy duty vinyl from Jo-Ann Fabric taped on with black Gorilla Tape

The PVC pipes are schedule 80 grey conduit from Home Depot.

You might call ahead to make sure they carry schedule 80. The schedule 40 stuff is too flimsy. You could also use the steel conduit, but finding connectors the right size may be tricky.

  • best source of free energy ive seen so far on youtube. keep it up man.

  • So simple and fantastic, hm? Congratulations for the project. Could you retrieve some energy from it? It is nice to see that ideas spread fast in Internet and get useful. You may get some more information about this type of generator if you Google "Feliz superbwind". And there are some more ideas in my website under the separator "wind energy". Cheers.

  • very interesting your assembly, OK 36 magnets and 27 windings. it would be possible to keep the same orientation of the magnets on all the perifery but to reverse the reel CW and ccw by group of 3 windings. also one can on the other hand add a magnet on chaques winding also by groups of 3 in polarié opposite with the mobile magnet, N/S the energetic efficiency seait perhaps better

  • why don't these people ( all making VAWT's) use gear reduction?

all these guys seem real smart and make nice machines , but none seem to be gear reduced...

and also - couldn't this guy stack +-5 of his home built windings/ stators on top of each other?

  • The reason is that it is less efficient. You loose some energy in the friction of the gearing mechanism. In the case of very large windmills, it is better to gear it up because otherwise the generator would be too large.

  • @vortextower

thats kinda what i thought... the magnets on the generator make it hard to move the rotor... but once its going , it might keep going... even if its over-sized...and the transaxle/gearbox...

    what about an 'exciter'...

  • The load on the generator is constantly drawing energy from the windmill and slowing it down. An efficient gearbox is not a bad idea, because it reduces the cost of the generator. Smaller generators cost less. There is a balance between generator cost and efficiency. If you can build two windmills by using a smaller generator for the price of one with a larger generator, then by all means, you should gear it up.

  • You could stack generators on top of each other to increase the power output as long at the windmill is capturing enough energy to turn them. The load of the generators is constantly trying to slow down the windmill.

  • @mellifluouschinook gear reduction = friction= loss of power.

As for stacking one could just as well make the rotor taller, if you want more torque, make the rotor wider.

  • _Nicely done man!

  • So actually, your coils are much bigger than your magnets, right? I thought the coils had to be smaller than the magnets. Or doesn't that affect much? I made a coil today that had the same size of a magnet, but I only got 80 mV out of it. Should it help if I made a bigger coil?

  • Some design parameters:

1 gear it up for higher RPM

2 Increase diameter of the wheel so that magnets pass the coils at higher velocity

    3. Increase the number of windings in the coils to increase the voltage

(You have to be careful not to get the resistance too high. Smaller gauge wire will have too much IR drop)

    4. Decrease distance between the magnets and the coils

    5. Increase size of the magnets

    6. Have magnets on each side of the coils as is done in many windmill designs with stators.

  • You can also increase the number of magnets and coils. Make sure that you have a positive and negative facing magnet centered on each side of the coil. There should be half as many coils as magnets. (Two magnets per coil for this kind of design or four magnets per coil for the Stator type design)

  • very nice setup. great job

  • How many magnets did you use?

  • 36 (one for each spoke of the wheel)

  • Thanks. How did you determine the size of the coils? I have also made a wind turbine (you can see it on my profile), but I only have 16 magnets, from a DC engine. Can I come to enough volts to charge a car battery?

    Thanks.

  • I measured the peak to peak voltage for several sizes of coils while turning the wheel by hand. I wanted to have 2 volts per coil at 60 RPM. I have 9 coils per phase, so I can get 18 volts per phase.

  • Nice work!! How much dose it generat?!?

Does not the white "construction" disturbe the magnets and the coils?!? I want too use a bisycle wheel too, (they have a good spin) but i dont know how yet. Your idea was really nice doh

  • I've used non-magnetic materials that don't disturb the magnetic fields.

From what I can tell it is only about 10Watts at 60 RPM, but that is at very low wind speeds. The power goes up exponentially at higher wind speeds. I'll try to make a graph in the future.

  • With a big windmill like that you could gear it up and get a bunch of RPMs on the generator.

  • The movie makes it look bigger than it is. One person can easily pick up the whole thing. It was all built with just a screw driver and hand saw.

  • Yes you could easily gear it up by using a bicycle chain. You could have a 10 speed VAWT if you want.

  • 18 Volt at 60 RPM ist great !

Did you messure the resistance of the complete coils ? How many turns did your coils have? And wich type of magnet do you use ? Thanks, Bernd

  • I used up two 11 pound Essex spools to make the 18 coils. Approximately 100 feet per coil

I haven't measured the resistance. The magnets are 1 inch diameter round Neodymium magnets that I found on ebay for $1.40 each. I'm glad I didn't try to use anything bigger, because they can easily pinch your fingers.

  • Resistance of 9 coils is 3 ohms.

There are 9 coils per phase and two phases.

  • Love the generator part!

  • PS - Looking at the coils, that looks like really big wire. If you used thinner wire with more winds, you would get loads more watts. Just sayin'

  • 15 AWG wire was used to reduce the resistance and increase the current. Peak to peak voltage is at about 18 Volts at 60 RPM, which is enough to charge the 6 volt golf cart batteries.

  • This is probably close to the Honeywell wind turbine design, turned horizontally and with blades mounted on the spokes. This design, like theirs, puts the magnets out at the end of the blades, or the rim of the wheel, where they will pass the coils much faster than if they were at the hub, like most generators. Great idea, vortextower!
