I don't know for sure what the pots are and it does not matter I usually adjust the taper by ear the mids come up first because they can push through the signal side of the pot quicker ... to hear this effect in another original amp check out the 1969 plexi bass 50 video
those volume pots you show in the video. are they linear or audio taper? i have audio tapered pots in my amp so I thought the resistor trick might not be for me.
secondly, if you don't mind me asking, why would the resistor on the pot bring up the mid first? does it have to do with impedance because of the added resistor?
This is really helpful. I just picked up a YBA-1 and am going to perform a JTM 45 mod on it. Glad you are pointing out where things are too. I wasn't sold until you played a bit of Stepping Out. You've got that nice midrange going on and even more gain than Clapton had back in the day. Almost Eric Johnson like tone. Beautiful.
You are definetly nailing "The Bluesbreaker Tone". I'd like to hear some more of your playing using this tone. Thank you for a very in depth explaination, I hope to learn electronics enough to work on and build my own. I'll be saving this video for when that day comes.
you talk about the bright cap w/ pedals. i noticed today that some really strange things happen with the sound when using pedals (a maestro fz1-clone) on the hi-gain bright channel on a jtm45 clone. I plugged it into the low-normal input and it sounded sweet! is that normal? it sounded really thin in the bright hi input, almost like something was wrong. have experienced the same thing with a rangemaster clone...
yes, thats why I don't use a bright cap and you'll
notice the Hendrix amp did not (look up dickensen jtm45/100) because if you turn down the volume and engage the fuzz only the nasties get through the bright cap ...
i have a JTM45 clone than will be changed from Mallory 150 to SoZo vintage series caps JTM45 kit. I will most probably record before/after, though it depends, I'm having a few other upgrade plans... I have read very good stuff about SoZo. theres a thread on metroamp.
Certain details are Key others are unimportant ...unfortunately you have to do enough of this stuff to separate the BS & snakeoil from the real keys to the sound ..
Note: I did not use KT66's, Mullard caps or a JTM45 type OT

I use Mallory 150s for most stuff and old mustards to make things look right when Im restoring an old amp

Outstanding! My JTM modded YBA didn't sound like this.
Pat, how do you like the Mallory 150 over the Mustards. Have you compared to Sozos?

@ericohman The Malloy cap's are louder sounding than the Sozo.

Did you find that the mullard caps gave a better tone?

I've learned more about amps from your vids than 25+ years playing through them.
