My friend and her mother came to the US from Brazil 10 years ago. August 10th they are going back to Brazil for good. My friend lost her job and her mother makes 8 bucks an hour. They own an apartment in Brazil on the beach and think now the better life is in Brazil. I think we are going to see many people running for the borders (and not getting into the US)

My own answer: diversity is not necessary a strength. It seems ("seems") to me that countries iwth homogenious populations compete better than those with large or diverse ethnic groups. E.g. Japan is pretty homogenious. They compete well in cars and electronics. China is pretty homogenious. I need not mention how well they compete. On the other hand, Mexico likewise seems to be homo, but it's corrupt and doesn't prosper (although I do think it is competitive).

well i think there will be a split but i think more or less in beliefs, democrat, or republician. problem is i think many will be confused on what way they want to live. The individual has always faced the realities of tribalism. You are correct-- any group who can gain political and resource advantage will dominate the other groups in society. The key to freedom and opportunity has much to do with the individual's self-identity-- is one an independent sovereign individual or does one identify as a member of a given group or tribe? A multicultural state CAN exist long-term IF power is diffused and devolved to localities. Switzerland is a perfect example of this: French, German, and Italian ethnics live together in peace because the Swiss cantons have so much power vis-a-vis the Swiss central government. Well the dynamic that happens in say high school seems to fit with your theory. The entire school does not integrate into one cohesive network but separates into distinctive groups. I think that if people are mature enough to not place importance on skin color then it really just comes down to culture. Multiple races can share the same land, but you need a common vision of what the nation stands for in order for it to hold together. Basically what I'm saying is that it's culture not race that matters. Unfortunately some people haven't even gotten to the point of respecting all races.

When one group stands out as more adventaged in a society, tensions arise. Where I live, the Natives feel disadventaged compared the Whites, Mormons tend to be more prosperous, and there is a small growing tension against them. 2400 Canadian troops are on 72 hr stanby right now for deployment to the Gulf. This Regiment is trained for civil unrest and has already been used in Afgan. and Bosnia so they are well trained. I see blacks and whites living together in poverty without any trouble (for most of them). They recognize that they are all in the same boat, it's the class separations that create the most hostility. When one group of people are well off and another are poor, there is bound to be conflict. The people doing well will ALWAYS believe that they are doing well because of their own ethic and the ones living in poverty are there because of their work ethic.

We do live in an age of prophecy, the pole shift is a real threat, Ive been watching the geo-magnetic field data through NASA and USGS for awhile, I have to say it's about to turn off or flip, given geological records and other sources of evidence, it would be off for a few days or about a week. but even right now the earth looks really bad, the magnetic field is shreded. Perhaps the source of all this chaotic weather will be increased solar radiation tied into this.

My friend and her mother came to the US from Brazil 10 years ago. August 10th they are going back to Brazil for good. My friend lost her job and her mother makes 8 bucks an hour. They own an apartment in Brazil on the beach and think now the better life is in Brazil. I think we are going to see many people running for the borders (and not getting into the US)

My own answer: diversity is not necessary a strength. It seems ("seems") to me that countries iwth homogenious populations compete better than those with large or diverse ethnic groups. E.g. Japan is pretty homogenious. They compete well in cars and electronics. China is pretty homogenious. I need not mention how well they compete. On the other hand, Mexico likewise seems to be homo, but it's corrupt and doesn't prosper (although I do think it is competitive).

well i think there will be a split but i think more or less in beliefs, democrat, or republician. problem is i think many will be confused on what way they want to live. Maybe a split in the us so that many can believe in their way. if things get really bad, the people that don't want guns will fail to defend theirselves, and others will fight for their lives. which may in turn make people much more defensive and protective.

The key to freedom and opportunity has much to do with the individual's self-identity-- is one an independent sovereign individual or does one identify as a member of a given group or tribe? General we want to be with people we can identify with or feel some acceptance from. Observe any large gathering that's diverse and you'll soon notice sub-groups form, by age, dress.

when things go south it seems to be normal for a group to be scape-goated. These are usually seen as outsiders in some way, like the jews in Germany, or pick a group in the USSR or Balkans. Politicians will probably feed this. Seems to me that you're seeing things pretty clearly.

When the "money dries up" who do you think is least prepared for such an event? City dwellers or those in rural areas. Some would criticize this approach, but keep in mind that immigrants have the option -they can go someplace else. If you've come from some 3rd world hell hole, America should be a paradise. Working to support yourself, getting along with your neighbours, and being law abiding isn't alot to ask.

It makes sense that one group would dominate. It is all about networking. Look at the US. It seems like everyone there went to school together or are in the same "secret societies" or are related. People tend to follow the same paths as those around them and people recommend and hire people they know. Heck, Obama is Dick Cheney's distant cousin or whatever. Like I said, it is all networking.

@fyte4it there is no economic equilibrium for Native Americans, & Blacks in particular, other groups who have migrated here willingly is different, they have other lands they can still use viably to achieve, everyone's history is different, and white ppl need to understand that, instead of viewing everybody's history from a narrow point of view. There has never been an equal playing field in the US for these groups, poor whites have always been used to discredit the other races, i.e. teaparty.

A multicultural state CAN exist long-term IF power is diffused and devolved to localities. Switzerland is a perfect example of this: French, German, and Italian ethnics live together in peace because the Swiss cantons have so much power vis-a-vis the Swiss central government. This is also the reason that America has had success. The problem is that the US central gov't is attempting to consolidate more and more power. In the future this may cause the bands that hold us together to fray.

more cynical than usual. Multi/Culture is in our every day lives in the U.S. The music we hear, the cloths that we wear, the foods that we eat. Don't mistake Harmony with culture. Without people sticking to some form of there heritage it would forever be lost to there children, yet there children fight hard to break free from such things. Every generation that a family is here in the U.S. they loose just a bit more of it. Till all that is left is I'm Irish American, African American etc.

United we stand divided we fall. Only evil divides us into groups and then finds ways to use one group over another. As long as you become an American and you don’t hyphenate your origin. (Black, Asian, Indian, Etc -American) I am a mixed bag of American Indian and 3rd generation Norwegian. My kids are mixed race so I am concerned we have worked so hard to accept all races and now small groups are reversing the racisms. We all need to stand up and reject it.

Well the dynamic that happens in say high school seems to fit with your theory. The entire school does not integrate into one cohesive network but separates into distinctive groups. How long did it take to accept the different kinds groups that exist today? Everyone wants their team to win or their group to prevail.Even on the job site you have those who befriend the boss so they can influence decision and rarely is this power used in a noble manner.

I think that if people are mature enough to not place importance on skin color then it really just comes down to culture. Multiple races can share the same land, but you need a common vision of what the nation stands for in order for it to hold together. Basically what I'm saying is that it's culture not race that matters. Unfortunately some people haven't even gotten to the point of respecting all races.

Racism increase violence, and is a often ignored undertone in our melting pot culture. I think racism mostly in the older generations, but flows down more than most would admit. If they want their language and culture continued, they have started their own schools, paid for those schools themselves. so let the Mexicans pay for their own, instead of snarling at the rest of us to teach them in Spanish. Diversity is great. I have black/ mixed/ latino friends all around me. This is a nation of mutts. Ethnic and religious conflicts are based on a financial jealousy. The Tootsys of Rwanda were hated because they were more prosperous than the Outous, the same for the Jews in Germany. When one group stands out as more adventaged in a society, tensions arise. Where I live, the Natives feel disadventaged compared the Whites, Mormons tend to be more prosperous, and there is a small growing tension against them. As for the Blacks, there are so few of them, that they are perceived positively.

As time passed those differences disolved to the greater degree but still are present. That does not mean than the "experiment" is a failure. Time simply takes time. No doubt in tough times people will be drawn together for the same reasons as in past millenia. A bit cynical today eh Reg?

I would need to see a working example of it. For instance Luxembourg seems to be quite a melting pot with some of the highest GDP per captita at $78,000, i'm not sure about the %'s but look at the ethnicity histroy on wikipedia , lots of races there.

2400 Canadian troops are on 72 hr stanby right now for deployment to the Gulf. This Regiment is trained for civil unrest and has already been used in Afgan. and Bosnia so they are well trained. As a Canuck myself this upsets me but the same base these troops are at is the same place BP is dooing testing to stop a major blowout. The CDN govmnt signed an agreement in Feb. of this year allowing troops from both our countries to cross borders in the event of civil unrest. Its just wrong.

We are really TWO main cultures then subdivided by every little difference. The two cultures are the northern Yankee and the Southern. These were the original two main cultures in America. Thomas Sowell writes about these in his book "Black Rednecks White Liberals". Over the years the cultures have evolved and changed. But I believe, like Sowell does, that the black culture of the U.S. is a remnant of the early White south.
