...Um, the government doesn't handpick them, local coaches go on talent hunts for kids with talent when they were young. The officials only come into the picture after the kid had proven themselves with training to be really talented, and that happens on a private level.

As for "special sports camps" and "training 18 hours a day", no, that's just a bunch of bs. They do train a lot however, as to be best in anything you would need discipline and hard work.

a) they're not forced. They have an option. For example, Chen Ruolin joined because she had a week body so her parents wanted her to do a sport.

b) they only do it if they like it. For example, one of the shooters got bored and went home for a year, but then she wanted to find her dad who abandoned her mom and her, so she went back on the team.

also, there are local training facilities. You only leave your parents to train if you make the national team. Most Americans leave home to train, too. (ie according to NBC, Shawn Johnson's the only female American Olympic gymnast who didn't)

The Chinese have simply evolved the sport technically and biomechanically. To say, they "stole" everything from the US system, is simply not true. Plus, any experienced diver can clearly tell the US school apart from the Chinese school. Yes, the Chinese system is quite rigorous in grooming future diving talent, but it's not the only reason for success. Just look at the medal success of countries that have imported Chinese know-how and Chinese coaches, like Australia and Canada.

As a fellow diver, I say she is amazing. Being able to pull off reverse, inward, back 2 1/2 pike, front 3 1/2 pike, and reverse 1 1/2 2 1/2 twists for excellent scores is amazing. The best I can do is a Front 1SS 3 Twists on the 1m for scores of 4 max.

Not many realize it, but the USA has more medals in diving than any other US sport. We used to be the diving power house. China essentially trains its divers from birth.
