Naughty how? These are movement studies. Muybridge was capturing sports movement and movements associated with typical activities--typical 19th century activities. He photographed boys, men, women, and children with their mothers and many, many animals in motion - all nude.
This movement had never been captured for study before. These sequences would have been unsuitable for general viewing, but many, many discoveries were made using these studies - changed the way horses were painted.
Of course thsi is porn. Sure Muybridge was studying human movement. Sure, total nudity may have been encessary to fully study the human figure in motion. However, a lot of the stuff is gratuitous (not that I'm complaining...). After all, the study of human motion does not require one naked female pouring water all over another naked female or one naked female tearing off the wrap from another female, leaving her naked and covering up her bush in a vain attempt at modesty.
I watched this on BBC4 in the UK when it was first broadcast in 2004 (if I remember correctly.Interestingly, when the series was repeated in 2007, this 40 second sequence was totally excised. Perhaps the estate of Edweard Muybridge had got in touch.....
For the record, I love Muybridge's studies of human bodies in motion because they work as both science AND erotica.
He made these films to show how movement happens - that they are naked is immaterial - if anyone is shocked by these it says more about their strange values than the honest display of unashamed and unerotic nakedness
nudity flagged

hi scarletlark,
russian interpretation overlaps
leonsdottir 3 years ago
Is that always the case? I can barely hear the English part, so it must be pretty hard to listen to the Russian part as well.
scarletlark 3 years ago
no, for me (i'm russian) it was ok to here the russian translation though the volume of the english text could be reduced.
sorry, but that was the only version i had, so...

I think Muybridge was interested in science. If he had been trying to make pornography his movies would have looked very different.

yes caus pornography wasen't new
it exsited with the birth of photography
miouth150 4 years ago
If Edward Muybridge was a pornographer then so is the National Geographic Society.

Pornography existed with the birth of the mind.

Pornography goes back waaaaaaaaayyy before the birth of photography. I'm pretty sure people made suggestive artwork from the beginning of time...
