@downeastgunworks Thanks for this video! Maine? You sound like my people here in the Texas piney woods! Gonna check your site out. I need my 1974 M94 blued. You mention that you do that. It looks like a black paint that's coming off the receiver.
looks so much different than the 1915 25/35 that we just got that was my great (possibly great great) grandmother's that my late grandfather got his first deer with at 13
this video helped me a lot thank you but i think ill have to watch it a couple more times before i can do it without the video but it shouldnt take to long to get to that point
@EvilKratos89 No battery of hunting rifles is truly complete unless you have at least ONE solid lever action in it. I have several myself, and the model 94 .30-30 Winchester is one of them.
got tedwilliams model100 30-30,searsroebuck.looks like from 1960's&when you cock lever down 2 then bring bullet upward 2 barrel on the upward motion of lever the bullet doesnt come all the way up 2 barrel opening,it stops just short&wont allow the action of lever2 push bullet into barrel.must use finger to get head of bullet entering barrel so can finish loading bullet in chamber4 firing.question is this hasnt been used/cleaned in decades, could it just need cleaning?or is it a part
@downeastgunworks Thanks. Just I cannot get the stock back on and I have no clue what i did wrong, I only removed it to refinish it and now it doesnt fit correctly.
@ktktwix Make sure you have the lower tang back in properly. You might have to tap the butt end of the stock with a rubber mallet if it's tight to drive it back into place. But be careful.... if the gun's not reassembled the right way, you could split the wood driving it back on too hard.
@downeastgunworks the lower tang is in properly, and the stock slides back on easily but the upper tang is about 1/4 inch above the stock and if i shift the stock then the lower tang is about 1/4 inch out of the stock, I dont think i bent the tangs removing the stock I just tapped on the stock with my palm like you did and it came right off
@ktktwix You do know you can squeeze upper and lower tang together, right ? If the wood sticks out a little at the top. The lower tang is either dovetailed or just pivots on a pin depending on what model gun you have. When you go to slide your stock back on, just squeeze the two tangs together.
@ktktwix Not all of them will pivot. Only some models do. Most have a T - slot the lower tang goes into. But you can still squeeze them by hand a little bit until you get the wood in place. it's softer metal. Just don't go nut wild doing it and you should be OK.
@downeastgunworks Mine is a 1947 model and it just has the T slot so I am thinking it may be bent, I will try squeezing it together a little and see what happens
@downeastgunworks Got it bet back, I will be more careful removing the stock next time, jsut the gun is from 1947 and was never taken apart so everything was stuck on the gun
@303BoltAction It def take some patience.. LOL.. Im with you though. I dont Fire my 30-30 much do to the take daown. Not to mention Everytime I take it down more potential to get scratches and wear on screws etc. Gotta love AR' or Ak platefoms, no tools required.
Thanks, this was a great and helpful video! I'm 14 and my grandpa gave me his old 30/30 he used to hunt deer with. When I take it to the range and fire off multiple rounds, the barrel really heats up. Is there a certain way of cocking the lever while preventing skin contact with the barrel?
Yes. Keep the rifle up to your shoulder, hold the forearm with your off hand, then use your firing hand to run the lever. Most peopple will dismount the gun to run the lever.... I don't understand why that is.
I just barely today got an old (and pretty beat up) Model 94, my first one. One question I have is about loading it...I assumed it was like loading a shotgun, you just push the rounds in one at a time. But I found that if I push the bullet all the way into the loading gate, once the gate snaps shut the cartridge slides back and prevents the gate from opening again. Is that normal? I can load it up by never letting the gate close, but there's no way to top it off until it's empty. Is that normal?
That's pretty normal on an older gun. I still load all my lever guns the same way.... leave a little bit of the tail end of the last cartridge sticking out.
@downeastgunworks Well, that's good to know. I saw a video after this where the guy was just sliding them in, easy as pie, and I figured mine must be busted. What makes it do that? Is there a worn part or something? Can it be fixed with any ease, or am I stuck with it? I'm going to take it all apart and clean it really good anyway.
NO. For everyday cleaning after use, you can simply open the bolt by dropping the leevr and scrub the bore with a brush and patch. BUT after numerous years of crud built up inside the gun it needs a very good disassembly and cleaning in detail.
i do have a question though i dont know anything about the sights... the previous owner ground the sights off for some reason i dont know.... do you know about how much it would to be repaired or is there something i can do myself??
awesome video! i traded a boat for a ducks unlimited 30-30 lever action winchester, i was told it had never been fired. i put 4 rounds into it and they stayed in the magazine tube... lol well your video helped me amazingly because i have never once taken a gun apart! i totally dissasembled it and cleaned it and now works perfect! thank you so much for making the video! at the time i did this you were the only person that had a video up the 30 30 lever action. thanks again!! keep them going!
@Apocolovids I can understand why ! I never NEVER refinish an old gun if I can talk the customer out of it. It ruins the value.... even if there's no finish at all on it.
Very informative and very helpful. Thank you. Also, I laughed pretty good when spring shot out of the mag tube; had a similar incident with one of my guns not long ago. Damn things hurt if you catch them on skin.
Well you might get a good laugh out of my dog too. She's black lab that steals the show on some of the videos. She drives me nuts with her squeaky toys sometimes. HAHAHA
we have a model 94 made by P.C.M.R used by the bc rangers on the west coast of canada ( where i live ) and it has the stamp that looks like a C with 3 lines in it, it has like 70% blueing and 70% wood. any idea on the value?
Check with the Blue Book of Gun Values. There's a serial number listing in the back of the book for Winchesters. I also have a Winchester book here that lists factory numbers.
Hey Jim, Great Video!! Semper Fi... This will help me fix my screw up i think. how does the Barrel come out of the frame? I reloaded a bullet a few more times than i should have, the bottle neck of the cartridge blew off the end when i shot it, now it is stuck in the chamber and i need to get it out. any suggestines?
The barrels screw into the frame..... but this ain't the way to remove the stuck brass. Try using a brush with a very tight patch wrapped around it. Go in from the muzzle end and push it through.
The barrels are threaded into the receivers. To get a stuck case out, you might want to try the following trick..... use a cleaning rod and wrap a tight patch around the cleaning brush. Push from the muzzle end. Works for me most times.
This video was just what I needed - it's a lot more work involved in cleaning my 94, than my 1936 Marlin, but they're just as fun to shoot! Thanks Jim!
I was given a 1968 Win 94 by my step father who never cleaned it. It still works great and was his deer rifle for decades and hung in a scabbard on his horse most of that time. I diasassembled it before finding this page and this certainly helps me get it back together. Thank you, Sir!
hello Jim I have a pre 64 Win mod 94 and am having difficulty removing the magazine tube. I pull and pull and it does not slide out like the one in your video... any advice or is if different for a pre 64?
@VonRitter86 There are 3 screws that holds the mag tubes in place..... look in the video ! One holds the mag cap in place by the muzzle. One goes through the barrel band behind the front site. The last one is through the forearm / hand guard. If you are STILL having a hard time, then insert a pin punch into the screw hole that holds the magazine cap. Twist back and forth until you loosen the mag tube. They can be tough to remove sometimes.
Very, very helpful and let me tell you thank you so much because with video instructor, you save me a lot of money on gasoline, the trip to gun shop distance. huf...Thank you again.
