Kurt, next time you have to deal with a lot of sand or gravel, if you can dig the block underneath the first (sand)stone that's holding the gravel or sand. Then place a torch in the space of the block you broke and after you break the block that's holding the sand or gravel, the torch will cause it to break and you won't have to dig at all.

As for the interior: you could gather some wool, some dye, and make a carpet, those usually look nice. Or you could build a chimney out of cobblestone and netherrack (just make sure that it's not close to flammable materials). Maybe you can make some paintings, some bookshelves and some tables? I know you're not much of a builder, but your house looks so empty DX

@kurtjmac I have a suggestion for you: Try to use the number keys for switching to tools/food/torches/etc, especially when you need a weapon fast. You already have a habbit to organize your hotbar so getting used to specific tools being on the same number won't be a problem. I've seen you quite a few times panic and scroll like crazy, so this approach I think would help you.

Kurt, you know what you can do about lagg? install the optifine mode, you are getting the lagg spike of death becouse of the minecraft autosave, wich ocurrs every 2 seconds and causes the lagg. optifine mod allows you to change the autosave time, so you will no longer get lagg. hope I helped!
