  • My right ear LOVES this song! :)

  • Donald watching Skunk........priceless.

  • My left ear LOVES this song!

  • i love when the horns come in on the second chorus after "i did not think the girl could be so cruel"

  • The clothing and hair are frightening but the music kills.

    Timeless.

  • Saw Steely Dan in the seventies in Leeds,Yorkshire..still one of the best gigs i've ever been to and it's only a pity that this is cut short and Skunks amazing solo towards the end is not here.In my opinion he's one of the most original and brilliant guitarists ever!

  • damn this is probably one of the first hundred youtube videos

  • @whatthehellvideos YouTube was created in Feb 05, so it was uploaded in the first four months. I am pretty sure that there were thousands of videos already uploaded by then, but I understand what you mean. This is the oldest upload date I have ever come accross. Good eye to catch it :)

  • They kinda sucked after the founder Denny Dias left. Fantastic guitarist, wonder why he left...

  • @AKAOmnivore

True. Fagen and Becker decided to break the band up and use only session musicians. Dias did play on a few songs on SD's few album releases after this though.

  • This video would be great if it had sound.

  • @mackler turn UP the volume ctrl dude!

  • There in not a better Tele solo on this fucking planet!

  • hum

  • Still great music, "A Decade of" is one of my favorite albums. Fagen & Becker wrote some great tunes. I don't know which one is playing Piano and singing, I think it is Donald Fagen, I think he looks like that magician that was so famous 20 years ago and married the supermodel. I was waiting for the piano to disappear. :)

  • @manstersr That's Fagen tickling the keys. You're thinking of David Copperfield married at one time to Claudia Schiffer, but he made her disappear. Fagen could be Copperfield ugly brother. Ha ha.

  • el mejor video!

  • Steely Dan is my favorite band and I agree that Donald Fagan is a musical genious. On this video he looks just like the Muppet Zoot. Look it up.

Greatest American band ever. Sorry, Eagles.

  • @seabrook1976 HAHA! funny resemblence!

  • @seabrook1976 who came first Fagen or Zoot???

  • Cripes, 35 years later and Donald Fagen is as good if not better than he is here. Perfect!

  • Love it, especially invisible horns and lead singer accentuating those lyrics. Still I really like the song.

  • Lip synching at its very best.

  • Great miming by Skunk. Where are the guitar cords for the amps???

  • @gtrman75 the solo is different from the studio version. Which makes it all the more impressive.

  • agreed on all counts

  • I think this is the original studio recording behind it. Wish it was the live sound!

  • The answer is simple my friend...if she can't dig SD, ditch her. She's trash.

  • Ok fine. Its great. Truly. I don't know music but I get the sense that this shit is so much more than just rock and roll. I imagine its masterful musicianship and a crazy good blending of jazz. Here's my question. How do I get my friend to like it? She simply says "All their songs sound the same." I know she's missing it, but I can't explain it.

  • @TheMaqz get another 'friend'

  • soundtrack of my life

  • Great music and a wonderful video, but this is clearly an overdub. The soundtrack is the studio version of My Old School.

  • I agree. I'm NEVER going back to my old school. Dirtbags.

  • @DionysusAlS right on!

  • Donald Fagen doesn't look like a guy in his early 20s...

  • One of the oldest vids on YouTube

  • Just saw them in Philly last night.

I've gone to every tour since 'Rock-n-Soul Review'.

'My Old School' is *always* a crowd favorite.

But last night at the Tower...when they broke into this song....the audience went crazy.

I love going to Dan shows....it's always such a big party.

  • @kjk22956 i was there sat night 9/10 in the 3rd row and got the entire song on video under the scrutiny of the nazi security....maybe i should post my old school email me at ksd@email.com kevin

  • Great song, terrible lipsynch. The days before MTV.

  • Skunk Baxter is now an authority on intercontinental ballistic missile systems and has been consulted by the government on defense and anti-terrorism.

Google Skunk Baxter and read his Wikipedia entry.

  • This IS lip sync. It is note for note from the recording. It does look like everyone is making an effort, but we're not hearing what they are doing.

  • @GoodGearGuy Nor is any thing plugged in.

  • great guys but in these days people must have wondered --what are these people singing about ,,as they still wonder today -what are they singing about .Anyone Know really?

  • @MultiShades His girlfriend dropped him off at the train station when he was going to college... the train was called the Wolverine, he was going to Anandale NY, (Donald Fagen and Walter Becker met at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, in 1967)... Soon after she dropped him off, she was in trouble with the law & her dad found out & he found out (when he was smoking)- she was suppose to be his hometown sweetheart, but she changed while he was gone. Bard = called "William & Mary" of NY

  • @karindiane thanks

  • @MultiShades its a true life story!

  • the horns....the horns are PERFECT....such a great song...so tight

  • 60 people want to go back to their old school...

  • mysterious stealth horn section...maybe thats how Skunk got his side job designing bombs and rockets. Doobie ninja

  • Nope - no lip-sync here!! You couldn't BEGIN to lip sync THIS. Sounds great!!

  • This aint lip-sync, kids... =jeez!= Pay attention!

Anyone who thinks this is not live isn't a guitarist!

    Watch Skunk! Oh, lordy!

{And you don't throw your money away hiring these

background singers to lip-sync when they're barely

    even visibly on camera! Come on!}

  • @jcrx69 mate! this is clearly the studio version. the horns section, the backing vocal , the lead vox all the studio, also the guitar, EVERYTHING! Its a great song. i dont care that its not live.

  • Saw them last weekend in LA....they sounded tremendous!

  • This song is a triumph

  • 59 peeps thought William and Mary would do.

  • This is clearly the studio version of the song -- no live version -- and a music video meant to accompany. It's been so many years since I heard this song. It just arose in my mind as like commentary on a lifestyle shift i need to make, and it's just as i knew it way way way back then

  • funky old days lol right on! =D

  • There's NO music like Steely Dan. Donald Fagen is a musical genius.

  • They're so good you can't tell the difference between live and the orignal recording! Doesn't quite count as a "live" performance.

  • Didn't realize SD did lip sync ...

  • can't hear it. technical difficulties?

  • Derringer actually on 'Show Biz Kids'...'My O;d School'...Skunk and Diaz

  • This is lip sync - the guitarist who did the slide solo isn't even here (Rick Derringer)...

  • Viva la Bard

  • Is that "Skunk" on lead guitar? Wow, if so, his playing is incredible!

  • I love this song. I still play it over and over again -- in 2011! Vintage Steely! Dias, Baxter and Becker all in one song. Fantastic. Too bad the picture is so grainy. Must be off a TV.

  • @ogobeone Love it too!

  • I <3 this song!!!!

  • 2:47 is my favorite, Jeff is the king of those little delayed (staccato) notes that are always right in the pocket

  • Mr Baxter has quite a brain

  • Why does the sound on this only come out of the left speaker?

  • @MsFerris80 prolly doesn't enjoy miming

  • @MsFerris80 its mono... Only one speaker feed... Still sounds really good though...

  • Becker is so not interested. Way funny.

  • One of the oldest vids on youtube...it has survived many-a-record-label-purge

  • love the instrumental section with the brake and the cha cha rythm and guitor solo

  • Denny Dias is the main axe man, stop going on about Baxter, you're all wrong, lol.

  • @robert140602 did you watch the video? Thats Baxter doing the solo work, Dias is in the tydyed poncho. He is also very talented but Baxter did the solo work on this one.

  • @CAVEATTHIS I never said Baxter wasn't the soloist on this track, just that DDias is the main man, lol.

    Sorry for any misunderstanding.

  • Met Skunk at the airport once and though I was going to have a heart attack. I love Steely Dan and love his guitar riffs.

  • Hahaha! I love Skunk Baxter's solo when Donald's staring at him amazed at his ability to rock out to a backing track :)

  • My mother raised me and my siblings to the sounds of Steely Dan. Thanks mom. My life is so much the richer for it.

  • Whoa, no, Guadalajara won't do....Nice one. Thanks for posting.

  • Such a great band. Don't see musicians like this any more.

  • Becker's really attacking this version.

  • Steely Dans production is the classic rock equivalent to Hip Hop's DJ Quik. Such a distinct sound...once you hear the beat you KNOW who did it. IMHO

  • Hard to believe Steely lip-synched at any point in their illustrious career but here it is! Yuck.

  • You can tell in this video Walter isn't too thrilled about being there...

  • turn it up. sorry for our loss

  • turn it up

  • It's ok. The new slump's arrived. Soon everyone will be copying the 'Dan'. And time will be as a harsh, self-centred and souless again. Sniff it up babies! Groovey!

  • I'm hearing baritone sax and trumpets, but I don't see baritone sax or trumpets...

  • Donald Fegan kinda reminds me of a muppet

  • hey, there's the Skunk!

  • Fagan is walking all of you and wonder is just the start.Haven't any of you had a thought?

  • this is the studio version audio. don't be duped.

  • Lip-Synched.

  • This is like a weird song. Nobody knows what he's talkin' about. Maybe it's sicko. But I think it's just weird. Oleander and Ann an' dale, and all that stuff. ---J. Bieber

  • @BrokenneckYgor It's about his time at Bard, which is in Annandale-on-Hudson in New York state. It's where he went to school. Just so you know.

  • i favorited, but disliked upon the fact that they should have played the solo. hehe

god, that was great though. it was studio quality, just amazing.

  • old school i aint going back

  • Baxter must've been on some killer skunk to put out those crazy lines!!

  • Watching this, I'm actually kinda glad I missed the seventies...

  • @Flagg1991 Why? The seventies were great!

  • @Flagg1991 Your loss

  • 56 peoples listen britney spears

  • awesome stuff as usual from the legendary dan

  • Lip Sync

  • about once a month I change my mind as to which Steely Dan album is the best. No matter what the flavor of the month may be, they are ALL simply awesome. Nobody does it quite like Steely Dan.

  • year?

  • Right on!!!!!!!

  • I just visited William and Marry with my daughter. Oh no!

  • Thank The Lord for Don! becker is just so pathetic, Don just keeps him on out of pity. They even have to hire a REAL guitarist so becker doesn’t look so damn lame. He’s such a mental midget and just look at him trying to play, oh my God, jerking around like a palsey, geeeezzzz. Thanks Don, for taking care of the little feller. What a nice guy.

  • @aristotled1 Becker is playing bass; Steely Dan used many great guitarists. Your point?

  • 56 people went back to their old school

  • Dang, Skunk could make his guitar sound like a three-piece horn section!

  • jeff baxter is an alien

  • Some of the best guitar solos ever on a Steely Dan recording in my humble view. Plays next to the bridge, up towards the fretboard, in the center, with just what it takes everywhere, and the guy has so much stuff to bounce off from the rest of the band that they must all have had a real ball!! Oh class class class......

  • @fripouille69 Absolutely right. The longer I go, the more I'm amazed at the truly masterful playing Skunk Baxter has done for over 40 years. Incredibly he was already a virtuoso of his instrument at age 23 when SD did "Can't Buy A Thrill". But like all truly great players, he is humble about his talent & deeply respects his instrument & the craft. He's spent his life studying, from music theory to countless techniques and styles, & still he studies. Above all it's practice, practice, practice.

  • Daddy Gee is dead.

    Chino killed him...

  • The dislike button shouldnt be on this video period.

  • I love the music, but what do the lyrics mean for this one

  • @bradmonium1 Bard College at Annandale on Hudson, NY, busted a bunch of the kids for smoking pot, and they ended up "spending time with the working girls in the county jail". That so pissed off Becker and Fagan that they vowed never to "go back to Annandale". They throw in some other stuff just for interest, like Chino (state prison) and the gangster Daddy G.... "The Wolverine" : nickname of the train from NYC to Annandale on Hudson, although they probably just made that up too. (see Michigan)

  • +1 on Skunk Baxter- one of my favorite guitarists- the solo work on this tune is so creative!

  • @NashvilleBill --- me too.

  • As much as Donald looks cool in this, he also sings and plays the piano with such intensity.

  • @Parkinish He's the one who should be called "THE" Donald! (not Trump)

  • @Parkinish Considering he's miming that's not too difficult....

  • I love the Skunk solo work on this tune...When I first heard Skunk's solos back in the 70's I couldn't believe my ears...never heard a guitarist this talented back in that era...Blew me away....and it still does today....He's a MASTER with a 10th degree Black Belt in Rock Guitar...

  • @cisco993623 yeah. He's a great guitarist. Denny Diaz is no slouch either. Both are so different, yet compliment each other so well. If you havent yet, check out "Do it again". Denny rips the solo in that one.

  • The great invisible horn section.

  • @youtoober19125 I'd rather look at the hot legs of the back-up singer than the invisible horn section

  • @youtoober19125 That's OK I'd rather be looking at the hot legs of the back-up singer rather than the horn section anyways.

  • The Dan are the money.

  • This version is good, but could use a little more Cow Bell.

  • @NicFitNation If you like cowbell you might like this cover of a Talking Heads video: "Sound & Vision - WILD WILD LIFE cover ". More cowbell than should be allowed in any one song.

  • @CannedHam6 thx mang; I'm on it. Love me some COW BELL !

  • such an interesting guitarist. his approach is completely unique

  • Am I the only one who think he resembles Randy Newman?

  • Tele power. Yah.

  • Happy Birthday, Donald! Thanks for coming to this planet to share all your great music with us. You've made it a better place for sure.

  • Comment removed

  • Brings back memories of being young riding around with my dad. Windows down :) I would always wait for this song to come on. Thanks for sharing :)

  • I used to think this was about Annandale, VA, but it's Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.

  • dont look into it to deep....just listen!!!! rite on!

  • This is the recording ftom the album...i'm pretty sure they wouldn't lip-sync. But that's cool, they're the best!

  • Does anybody know what the William and Mary reference is? Bard College is in New York, nowhere near William and Mary.

  • @jab3785 Bard College used to be called "the William and Mary of the North"

  • Nice crooked glasses! Super Cool.

  • wow great song and voice , ...but ewwww what one ugly dude ~ !!!

  • These guys certainly touch something in a lot of people globally......even they don't understand it I'm sure...but it sure is gr8.......keep 'em coming guys....

  • See the 'fro on that dude?

  • I spent 4 years at WIlliam and Mary...and this never got old...we knew it was just a good rhyme...but we didn't care, esp. with the annondale references....

  • What a strange video - some old show but it's the Czech TV which means it was broadcast after '93 for sure. And it seems being shot straight off a TV screen!

  • Great band! Hate staged performances.

  • Countdown To Ecstasy- hell yes.

  • "She was singing and dancing and looking really boneable, which is pretty much what one looks for in a backup singer I guess. And by about a couple songs into the show I was totally sitting there thinking "I totally want to bone that backup singer." It was this kind of thinking that got me through those times in the show when Steely Dan decided to play a song I never heard before."

    Google Dave Hill Steely Dan

  • when I heard the solo I realized they were lip-syncing. Great song though, and an incredibley inventive solo. These guys were 2cool4school!

  • @terrybeaton It's clear they could have pulled it off live. Stupid TV producers. No horns, hello?

  • Enough cowbell here to please even Bruce Dickenson.

  • me an da boys ul be back uno me and dis guys r lik brudders oh

  • I love Denny's outfit! I want it

  • Denny Dias looks like Rick Rubin.

  • @mkerwin1 vice versa

  • lip synched crap. thought they had more class than that

  • @flowerdrop1 To be fair, it's their own song they're miming! They're not some social-club covers-band selling themselves as live musicians. They're doing a favour for the TV station that's giving them some coverage. No musician or observant listener is fooled by their lack of being plugged in. Just roll with it.

  • that short haired chick is tghe absolute in cuteness esp the way she dances..

  • i know someone that his niece learned there... it's kinda awkward- they actually went back for a concert... goodbye California!

  • i know someone that his niece learned there... it's kinda awkward- they actually went back for a concert... goodbye california!

  • i love all steely dan, but this is one of my all time favs

  • There is no brass on that stage?

  • @jeflan74 they're lip-syncing, playing guitars that aren't plugged in, etc....

  • @jeflan74 If you look closely, none of the instruments are plugged in. Got to love the 70s and 80s.

  • @nduchene1 My comment was "over stating the obvious" I had all their albums, but I never envisioned them doing a staged track appearance. They sounded way to cool for that "Old School" stuff.

  • @jeflan74 oh. you silly person. this is not a so called "live performance". This is like a video, like playback, like.

  • @kermankalle

nice use of the word 'like'...!! Like. Take it your American...?

  • @pliskenlee ...nice comment on my wording.....the answer is "Yes" ...like the guys you're watching.

  • GRANDE STEELY DAN........VIDA LONGA !!!!!
