The song itself is a masterpiece worthy of "old blue eyes "Sinatra or Tony Bennet as it plays like a timeless standard, lifes sweet sadness.Of course Garcia took it the heavens!
i wonder what Dame Kiri Te-Kanawa or a Welsh choir would do with it,it is that bloody great!
This is one of those songs that everyone that does it brings something different to. What she brings to it is way different than what Jerry did. You have to go into these kind of songs not looking for what the other people that have done it brought to it. Do I like this song as much as when Garcia did it? No. do I like this way a lot? Yes. I wish she would put out a dead cover cd!
Thanks for the upload! Thanks Joan for covering it, I know it's heartfelt. And sure enough, this song still gives me chills and happy tears things thinking of Jerry...so if that was the idea, Joan accomplished it! Peace.
I can respect this, I really can... but I don't think there was enough in it. I'm not taking anything away from her by any means, but I just... there is something missing. I think that the only artist who can do this solo is Warren. Just him and a guitar, it's magical. But this is one of those songs, Like Terrapin and Wharf Rat that was made just for Jerry. Joan did a good job, hell a great job, but it just isn't there for me. Sorry if I offended anyone.
i love this song done by the Dead, but when it is song with just the piano, i makes you think how beautiful the words are too. very graceful interpretation. i don't agree that she misses the nuances or is missing something in the music. that is the beauty of music, someone else covering it can make you hear in a whole new way. not everyone has to be the Grateful Dead, there is more to the music than Jerry!
Joan Osborne; the gift that keeps on giving...first listen I couldn't grasp; went and removed my ear wax, and voila...I can now fully appreciate the connection she makes; does it move me? quicker than fiber...
I'm not sure what others may have been thinking but I'd like to say thank you, this is great. It's beautiful to see how far and wide the music reaches.
not convincing - she doesn't get the finesse of the tune. She never convinced me, even when she played with Lesh - always strikes me that she doesn't really understand the subtleties of the dead's music - there's so much underneath the surface of that music that she just misses - just goes for the superficial aspects of the songs and "bluesifies" or "jazzifies" them, believing she has given an original interpretation. Sorry, but a thumbs down from me
@longlivejerryg I agree about the bluesy-jazzy bits but I think the problem is she doesn't have the voice or emotion/experience that is appropriate for the lyrics. Some songs can only be done by certain people and I think this one needs a special approach as it is such a simple song. Jerry and co used to put a lot into the song and it was the minute details that made this one work. Daring, though, to be alone with a piano, so extra points for, um, balls.

Somehow, I don't see Jerry arising from the dead and making homophobic comments in support of his music. Correct me if I am wrong.

In my opinion Joan Osbourne does an excellent job---very orthodox----of this great song. She shows it a lot of respect. Her emotion is----correct.

@longlivejerryg To each his own...I will say, though, that she makes this song listenable for me. Thumbs UP.
