He was a beast! I really miss players like him who don't mind to take risks to win points unlike 90% of the players nowadays who only wait for unforced errors from the opponents!
i love federer but you can see when he lost that Marat had to wait on federer's time just to shake hands at the end of the match. Federer is just too ignorant to see that Marat had him that day. Agree or disagree?
@stanleyyelnats11 the match went 5 sets, cut the guy some slack, it was a semifinal match of a grand slam too, there are only 4 grand slams a year and every player on the tour looks forward to playing them the most. I just think roger was disappointed that he lost as any player would have been, i dont think it was disrespectful
@abcjc1 I can understand that but although Roger tries to be this modest and humble player, arrogance does show. I believe that Safin should have done more with his career and there are many players such as Rios, Krajicek, etc who fall under the same boat. At the end of the day, Roger should have won because he has a better matched compared to Safin. All i am getting at is that Roger was mad he lost cuz he should have taken this game but he let Safin in and that is wat caused the upset.
well to compare Marat to Federer is a bit out ... it was often entertaining watching him, but he was quite stupid player and mentaly instabile (like his sister) ... but sad he doesn´t play anymore ...
federer beat sampras during his W prime, Marat beat both federer and sampras during their tennis prime. I saw him in person at the US open 1999 and hes a lanky guy. you missed his US open matches but that ok. thanks for the tribute
marat safin, one of the most talented and a player with one of the highest tennis IQ. You have so many fans here in the Philippines! GOD bless you, MARAT.
@zouzou2040 Actually, no. I should remove my comment. A rather funny but also upsetting story. Between now and the time I commented on this video, I found out that Marat is not on twitter and the guy following me is well just a guy. I feel so miserable, but anyhoo he should definately have twitter then maybe he could follow me :)
i d say to 1080portal: safin was the only one who could defeat prime federer on fast surface due to nadal in RG. But that Match (AO05) is prime of the prime of tennis essence. So mant points you can't belive! Easy I d say minimum Two per Games get in "play of the Week". If it had been a Final, it d be remembered as Wimby 80 (Borg/McEnr)
For some people Marat was just one from thousands tennis players, who just had his five minutes on the court, who couldn't control his emotions . For me he was and still is one of the most charismatic tennis players, so talented guy, who achived not everything what he could did because of his injuries. He had a heart for tennis. And in some way I love his behavior during matches, his expression. I miss him and I regret I didn't remember his best time. Love this video!
Excellent video!!!.... Marat is the greatest!!!.. he really plays in a unique way... the way he uses every single shot and the strategy he uses.. Wow!!.. really the best tennis player ever! :)
I remember that I watched the match Melbourne 2004, when Safin beat Roddick, who was Nr.1 at that time. Roddick had the fastest serve. But from the advantage side, Safin hit with the same or even more speed out of the court onto Roddick´s backhand, with more precision then Andy.
I think from the ad side, Safin had one of the best serves I have seen so far.
I will miss him as a pro and I wish him all the best for the after-tennis-life.
Very hard to win slams when you have injuries (wrist in 2003 and knee in 2006) spread out so far apart like Safin. Like Krajicek, who had two knees, and finally a shoulder (or elbow) go on him. I sometimes feel that even if Safin was motivated 100%, he would have only achieved 4-5 slams due to injuries. You can't deny how big of an impact that is in a short tennis career which last little over 10 years.
@Polarcupcheck Every time Safin was playing himself into form, he got injured. 2003 could have been big and I believe he would have at least reached the final of the AO that year. He injured his knee during the 2005 clay court season and played on which probably aggravated it.
@MaratSafinVideos Few people realize, the people who have won the most majors, have suffered the fewst season ending injuries. I can't remember Sampras ever being out for more than one tournament (U.S. Open 1999). Federer the same. Like I said, tennis careers are too short for two or more season ending injuries. Where would Federer be if he had to miss at least 6 majors. Certainly below Pete, and that is assuming he jumps right back on top, which usually is not the case.
@Polarcupcheck I agree but in some cases credit has to be given with the ability to stay fit for years on end but a lot of it is due to genetics and luck. Bigger guys like Safin are far more prone to injuries. I don't like comparing era's like everybody else does, Federer has surpassed Sampras' in slams but in my books that doesn't make him any better. We don't know how well Federer would have done in the Sampras era which in my opinion, had more depth and variation.
@MaratSafinVideos I think in sports, quite a few injuries are preventable, but the amount of athletes getting injured in other sports despite the best training and preparation, still makes it more luck than an evasive skill. I also belive that the Sampras/Agassi era had way more variation. Surfaces were more polarized, especially before 98' (when the started trying to slow down indoor). More styles, polarized surfaces, made dominance on all surfaces difficult.
@MaratSafinVideos We also don't know if sampras would still have 14 slams if he played on today's era where serve and volleyers gets killed 7 out of 10 times they approach the net
@calugcug21 This comment is very rich coming from one who didn't even see Safin in his prime, never mind Sampras. There's no serve and volley players that are close in ability to Sampras. And getting killed 7 out of 10 times is completely incorrect. The reason why decent serve and volley players like Llodra are not as successful today is because of the courts and balls, nothing else. Doesn't mean they aren't as good as baseliners who are ranked a little above them, the game has changed.
@MaratSafinVideos Im talking about sampras not safin. And yes sampras is one of the greatest s&v players ever and Im not saying he will not be successful in today's play style but I'm sure he wont have 14 slams
@calugcug21 What? If you didn't see Safin during his prime 2004-2005, then you didn't see Sampras during his, in the 90's, no?
Sampras is THE greatest serve and volley player and arguably the best tennis player of all time but comparing eras and players is the topic of conversation for the ignorant and that I'm not.
I could easily reply to you by saying, just like Rafael Nadal wouldn't win a slam outside of RG in the 90's and there's no way he'd win 6 in the 90's with the 90's clay era.
@MaratSafinVideos ok then he's the greatest check your temper because you tend to overreact alot, and yes I'm not ignorant comparing eras but if you call it ignorance then call yourself ignorant too because you also said that fed will not win as much in the 90's and I said the same about sampras in todays get it?
I hate to say this because I am somewhat of a federer fan but Safin at his best is probably better than any other player ever when compared to the rest of the field.
i started getting into tennis only a few years ago and i don't want Marat to go...when he started playing tennis i was like 4 years old...i wish i was older so i could have seen his whole career.
