Fabulous footage Austin, what a great location as well,Tornado sure looks well especialy on that last clip.I wonder if they will be using her on the Scarborough Spa Express this year??...........John
Thanks John, she won't be doing SSE's, the pool of locos is 6201/6233 for the RTC trains and anything from Carnforths pool for the West Coast operated trains. You can expect to see 'Hogwarts Castle' !!
the shap run was never going to be a record run, even though the boiler pressure never dropped below 240 all the way from Carnforth, I am told. Usually after Grayrigg, loco slow to build up the fire and gain pressure back, but Tornado never slowed down, the boiler is so good. A loco with 6'9" dia wheels is never going to get as many "power strokes" per mile, than a loco with 6'2" diameter. Obviously the Duchess's are 6'9" but they have 4 cylinders. Tornado just a great "runner" not "climber"!
@71000Ken I understood that Tornado now holds the record for Shap with a 13 coach load, & that she beat the Duke's overall time? Even if this is not the case, she has certainly proven that she's just as good at hillclimbing as she is at sustaining high average speeds. Although of course your case for wheel sizes makes perfect logic. The A2 Blue Peter with its 6'2'' drivers, is so far the best hillclimber of all!
Great stuff yet again Austin. I wonder what the HGV drivers on the M6 at Shap were saying? Relieved to see the lads have cracked the boiler stay problem. Come on everyone, sign up as Covenantors.....
Thanks very much Ed, I always think how amazed people waiting at stations must be when steam passes through at speed, usually with at least a ten coach train while they wait to pile into an overcrowded unit.
Excellent coverage of this magnificent run from 60163. What would she have done if she had really been trying I wonder? You get the impression there was still plenty of power in reserve.
Thanks, there was some talk when 'Tornado' appeared that they would apply to run at 90 at some point, so that would mean an even better run at a 'little slope' such as Shap. She definitely had steam to spare on this run.
This really is a magnificent machine Austin, she climbed Shap with a clean exhaust, and just a small plume from her safety vales, showing a tremendous effort from men and machine...superb camera work from you Austin, another work of excellence...Bob
It is indeed a fine machine Bob, a great achievement and that run on Thursday was just reward for those involved with the project. I almost didn't go out on Thursday either as I'm not a huge fan of summer steam.
Excellent video Austin, probably 1 of your best so far this year! I had a couple of friends from Chester on this tour and had a very enjoyable day out behind 60163. We need her down the North Wales Coast!!
Superb video Austin. The "Mmmm" really did sum it all up. The shot in particular from Shap Wells is really great, it's just a shame that it appears to be buried in overhead wires!!
Cheers, I'd give anything to go back and film in the days prior to electrification. One of the reasons why I film a lot at Shap Wells though is that the wires are a little less noticeable. 'Mmmm' was quite restrained I thought, I said something far worse to myself!!
Kicking myself for not going, thanks to all who recorded it , the ooh'm after the first clip is priceless, the old Duke will need to be properly fettled up to better this...
It's going to be interesting to see how the Duke performs, after all the infighting between the various factions. We are sure to see a few interesting battles ahead between them. Such a shame the Duchess is near the end of her ticket
Easily the best film posted here, I was on the train, joined it at Tamworth at 09.00am and got back at 10.40pm. Tornado was clearly on a mission going north from Crewe, the trip up Shap was brilliant. On the return journey Tornado made up lost time on the return journey despite the platform at Carlisle being blocked by a freight train, not getting enough water and running behind a service train it should have been in front of. Thanks for posting your video.
Thanks very much for your very kind comments. I thought something special was happening when I was at Shap Wells. It must have been really exhilarating on board the train. I filmed that freight at Birkett, it was travelling so slowly.
Thank you for is excellent work. I was on the merchantising team for Tornado, so you don't see much as we are so busy. There were 2 record broken yesterday, wait for details in steam railway's next edition...
Many thanks Ken, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's nice for those on the train to see the results from the lineside. I suspect I know which records were broken, she is certainly an impressive machine.
Thanks for some top notch footage of our engine - it was a great day out and all the more remarkable for going from Preston to Carlisle non-stop and unchecked!
Thank you very much, it was a great pleasure to witness the fine running yesterday. I'm sure the performance yesterday will have given great pleasure to everyone involved with the engine. Hope its not too long before she is unleashed on the fells again.
Now how did you know I had chopped a bit off? It was only a second or two but I wish I had kept the camera running, the sound going away was fantastic. You are more than welcome to a copy of the video if you wish. Thanks for your comments Leon.
Excellent pan shot on Shap Austin ! Tornado flew up all the banks on this run. I was surprised at the performance given the dry weather. Thanks for sharing Brian
Excellent footage as usual Austin. Reports elsewhere suggest there may have been a new record over Shap I knew I shouldn't have gone home after Kirkby Stephen!!
Thanks very much Mike, yes I saw that post re a new record, an incredible run. I got lucky for the last shot, I normally go down the M6 from Birkett but went over the coal road and back through Settle and saw crowds still waiting at Whalley Viaduct.
Thanks very much Mark, it was a good day and it will be interesting to see the performance logs from the day. It certainly looked an impressive performance, up there with the best runs of the Duke and Duchess.
Thank you, yes it was a lovely rasping exhaust at those locations. I arrived just a few minutes before she came through Langho and just found a space in the large gallery so was in amongst the still cameramen and their shutters. Like you say, just one of those things.
