  • Very cool.

  • How can sound waves be measured in space? Don't you need air as the medium through which sound travels? I was always under the impression that there is no sound in space at all for that reason. Or can this device transpose some other higher frequency into what it "would" sound like if we could hear it?

  • they have bene measuring sounds from the sol for years.

    audio clips are online.

if i remember correctly, the changed radio waves into audible sound.

(dopler effect), look around, it's heftty sound

  • @mindstormsabrewin if sound is a wave, a wave can carry infinitaly if there is nothing to hold it back like air.

space is a vacuum if you throw something it will never stop moving. same goes for waves through space, i never understood how they can manuever the ships around inspace with their thrusters that are fueld by gas. i thought in order to hold a flame you need oxygen...? i guess not in space tho?

  • @kaefbaml sound can only travel through mater like air or solid objects. this camera looks at the sun to observe these vibrations, it doesn't listen for sound. in space where there is no air, there is no sound.

As far as rockets in space go, spacecraft cary oxygen to mix with fuel in order to burn it, or use cold gas thrusters that dont require combustion. wikipedia has lots of info and links on their "rocket engine" page check it out!

  • @mindstormsabrewin your corect, their is no sound in space. this "camera" observes the vibrations, it dosnt listen for them.

  • I assume that the SDO is solar powered...?
