Just a quick question, does your saved files erase when changing batteries? I haven't had problems yet with my game catridges but still this is good to know that you can save this old game yet.
ok. goes to show how much I know about carts. I didn't even know there was a battery in GBA carts. and save an NES game? that was possible?? all that wasted time!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( I haven't started any of my GBA games yet, so I'm not sure what condition they're really in, except that they do play.
@CrimsonCrowess Yeah, the battery in a game cart is used to power the cart when it's not being played, so as to keep the saved data. This is why batteries in consoles like the DS and PSP run down even when they're not being used, as part of their battery is still being used to hold date and time settings, and things like nicknames and messages(DS nickname and personal message.)
@mysteryloser24 then mine must have been faulty from the start. I know about DS and PSP, those are easily understood, just like an MP3 player or iPod. I just didn't know about old game carts like that. you learn something new everyday! :)
I wish I lived closer to your store. I find it awesome that you actually take the time to make sure the save function works in games before you sell them. Thanks for being a good, honest, business owner.
I prefer to replace the battery in nes carts with a 2032 battery holder (you can get them at RadioShack) it makes it easier for future battery changes
How long does it usually take for NES games to lose their battery life? Does it depend on how much it's been used? Or will the battery just die after a certain number of years after the cart is made?
@L1Games Hi. Ik you it seems like to try to reply to all your comments and messages so i figured i'd try and ask you this here since i guess, its somewhat relevant and idk whether to pm or just write a comment. I have the original see-through purple gameboy color and the clip that holds the battery cover on broke years ago and I still love playing it time to time since the I love those Pokémon, Mario and Zelda games of that era. Is there anyway I can getl ike, a factory replacement?
look on ebay or amazon to see if you can find one. at the very least, maybe you'll be able to find a complete but non functional gameboy like yours that you can use for spare parts for a couple bucks:)
if you have all the time in the world, you could always wait for yard sales and the such and try to score one. but there are no guarantees with that idea.
How often would you need to change out the batteries? At the moment the only games I know of that need those batteries are the Pokemon ones, the oldest being Red for the GB which I've had since close to launch. The battery hasn't needed changing yet but I'm sure it's coming up soon. Also, if you're able to change out a battery in X seconds or X minutes, will data still be deleted or is it gone from the moment the battery is out?
I think when it's dead, it's dead. and once it's dead your data is gone:( you don;t need to do it often. a battery should last you a good long time (i'm talking like a decade or more)
Good video man. I had to do this, but I just melted the end of an empty pen with a lighter and pushed it on the screw as a cheap, single use tool. Didn't damage any of the carts I did, so I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the proper tools.
i hope nobody mentions they solder coin cells in with a blow torch! the method this dude showed was actually prefered with the tape because if the battery ever decides to leak it will not chew the components up
I feel really stupid now I had no idea that there was a battery in cartridge games... this may explain why some of my games are no longer working lol. Thank you for enlightening me.
Uhmmm my genesis broke cus its charger or battery poped i mean i bought it in iraq totally new but the houses they genarate to mutch electricity and as fast as i hocked the sucked up and started playing, more electricity came and bam my charger explode
@schizle32 You need a step down converter if you're going to play an NTSC system (US/Japan) in another country. In the US, a standard power outlet transmits 120 volts. In Europe and some parts of Asia, their outlets put out around 240 volts. You're lucky you didn't blow a circuit breaker, let alone a transformer.
I commend you, most used game stores do not recondition their take-ins. This adds value as the customer will get a longer lasting game. Cudos for you. Too bad your store isn't here in NJ.
Sweet vid. I need to replace the battery in my dreamcast. Think you can do a video on that? Also my XBOX won't keep time & date I have to fix that every time I use it just like my dreamcast. Know why?
first off, there is no fire hazard here. A button Cell battery wrapped in electrical tape is simply not capable of igniting. Period. It's electrical tape! It's made for this! LOL
your assertion that this is a possibility is beyond laughable and shows the credibility of any argument you make is without merit. You obviously know nothing here.
Lastly, Not sure where you looked, But according to dictionarydotcom to refurbish is "to improve the appearance or condition of; renovate; restore"
It's not a Mod. I'm Renovating/restoring it back to it's factory condition by replacing the dead battery with one just like it. Making the game operationally as it originally was when manufactured. This is a service to gamers.
It is NOT illegal to sell these games. To say otherwise is pure ignorance.
For the record, With a little research you would find that Modding isn't illegal to begin with. so, your whole argument is meaningless anyway. It will invalidate the warranty, but that's not a concern here as these games are far beyond any warranty they may have carried at one time.

Just wondering, I had some old pokemon gameboy games, some of the saves are totally gone(color ones), but there are some that still has the saves(original ones lol). If I wanted to replace the battery on the ones with the saves, the second the battery comes of, is everything erased?
You can use a CR2032 in a GBC cart aswell and it makes the saves last a bit longer, can't remember how much longer though. The only issue is the cartridge buldges a tiny bit but it dosent cause any probems at all. I put a CR2032 into my Pokemon Gold cartridge about a year ago and have had no problems atall. CR2032 batterys may also work for GBA carts but I have no idea if they do or not as I dont know of anyone that has tried before.
I always HATED NES games with battery-backup memory because they SUCK and are STUPID!! FUCK YOU, Link, I hope you DIE! That dead battery was the reason I never finished playing the Zelda games. Stupid ass Nintendo :p GOD why does Nintendo SUCK. Thank you :)
@CrimsonCrowess That's pretty unfortunate. Maybe it was in storage so long the battery ran flat before it was ever used. Keeping your game carts in the right place with adequate conditions can prolong the battery life of carts, because batteries run down faster or slower in different conditions, temperatures etc.
Nintendo is one of the greatest game companies of all time. Nintendo offered us a way to save games before anyone else did. it was fantastic. (Sega also used batteries.)
sure the batteries go dead but most have lasted decades and this was the only way to do it back in the day. So I say, "Thank you Nintendo!"
@L1Games It wasn't the only way, Muzz, and I do appreciate Nintendo, but the really awesome 3rd party companies like Capcom and Konami used a password or string of data to encrypt the important variables from your game's progress such as start location, power-ups / item pickups, and score / money. Even the Nintendo game Metroid used a password to encrypt these variables. After encryption, these data are only a few bytes long so there is no need for internal memory. Dead batteries = cart sales
@oyokid You'll know because you will get to a stopping point, save your game, then when you turn it on the data will be gone and you have to start over. Any high scores will also be gone. Things like that. Battery was for saving things; the most important thing being progress. Other games used a series of passwords to save information and these games were better, IMO... like Mega-Man or Metroid
My problem is Controller related (PS3), I had it for 16 months and it came with the PS3. A week ago, it started acting funky in the sense that it randomly will press buttons without me touching it (I.E. if i press R3, it would act as if i press L1 or L2, or im not pressing anything, it will press left or right on the Dpad) Any tips?
my game boy color game "the legend of Zelda: oracle of ages" doesn't work. i get to the menu, chooses new game, enter a name, but can't actually play the game what do i do?
I've had a friend who solders replace a few of mine with clips that hold the battery and can be changed again in the future with no additional soldering. But this is the easiest and fastest way I've seen and I'm capable in doing. Thanks!
It's all about the difference in accents. it's like the way you folks in Australia say Sega and it sounds like Sea-ga. (Charlie from StrictlySega does that. I love the accent. LOL)
Europeans pronounce the "Sol" in soldering as well. But in America, we spell it like that but the way we pronounce it is without the "L" sound:)
Nice! This was really helpful. I havent had any problems with saves YET but its bound to happen eventually. Are replacing SNES cart batteries more complicated?
Dude, Muzz, thank you so much for this video. A few months ago I bought a used Castlevania game online and it ended up not saving the game. I bought the wrong battery for it and this video just told me which one to get for my GBA/GBC games. You are the freakin' man, no question.
@beanboyo I just used a micro flathead. :) Jam it in along side the security pin on the head of the screw and twist. Either it'll turn just like that, or the security pin will snap off, and you can use a small allan key. :)
Hey my favorite game ( assassin's creed brotherhood) got that circle scratch on it my cat walked on it so it like pressed it down or something and I really miss it so I was wondering if you have a video how to fix the scratch so i dont have to buy a new copy of it or can you plz make a video?
@90rubixcube the circular scratches are not easy to get out. there is no home method that is likely to work. I'd say find someplace that has an industrial resurfcer and see if they can get that scratch out.
@L1Games hey I've had the perfect circle scratches like rubix and the way i get the games to work is i barrow a friends copy and burn it to my hard drive. when you try and play it the 360 will read as much of the game off the disc as it can and take the hard drive copy for the parts it can't read. it has worked with my copy of Crackdown, Guitar Hero World Tour, and Halo 3
Just a quick question, does your saved files erase when changing batteries? I haven't had problems yet with my game catridges but still this is good to know that you can save this old game yet.

@L1Games Thanks! Would they be on eBay? Or at hardware stores?
