  • so all the non-organic fruit & veg that people buy at the supermarket are all genetically modified?

  • @ShopaholicWithNoCash no, not all - there are some that are the most common, if you google you should be able to come up with a list. But without labelling, there's no way to know when you buy - that's why labelling is such an important issue now.

  • Genetic modification (GM) is all about huge profits to the companies. Focus is on immediate gains. Plants that are resistant to pests can be engineered to produce its own pesticide chemical internally which is as bad or worse than eating pesticide sprayed food. The size from the normal to abnormal giant size is also effected by doubling or triple set of chromosomes. There are disadvantages while it looks fine to be able to grow giagantic fruits and veges. Nice upload :)

  • @ritaturner

GM is also about feeding the growing population and allowing farmers in LEDC's grow crops cheaply. Do you really think the worlds population could survive off organic food which doesn't have large enough yields?

  • @MrMelyUK UN report, International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology Development by 400 scientists, concluded that GE crops have very little potential to alleviate poverty and hunger and can potentially increase hunger and poverty in poor countries, where most hunger and poverty occur. Several UN reports and peer reviewed studies suggest organic farming practices can decrease hunger and poverty in poor countries.

  • @MrMelyUK "Today's scientific evidence demonstrates that agroecological methods outperform the use of chemical fertilizers in boosting food production where the hungry live- especially in unfavorable environments.""To date agroecological projects have shown an average crop yield increase of 80% in 57 developing countries, with an average increase of 116% for all African projects." srfood.org/index.php/en/component/content/article/1174-report-agroecology-and-the-right-to-food

  • @MrMelyUK "Organic farming can lead to increased food production – in many cases a doubling of yields has been seen""the average crop yield increase was even higher for these projects: 116 per cent increase for all African projects and 128 per cent increase for the projects in East Africa"

    unctad.org/en/docs/ditcted200715_en.pdf

  • @MrMelyUK "Organic farming can yield up to three times as much food as conventional farming on the same amount of land.""in developed countries, yields were almost equal on organic and conventional farms. In developing countries, food production could double or triple using organic methods" sciencedaily"dot"com/releases/2007/07/070711134523.htm

  • I wonder if it's possible to genetically modify the weeds so that they grow like crazy and smother everything else out for one year, but then they don't seed, so the new year the crop wins over the weeds. I know there are many weeds, so you'd probably have to do it in rotations. Or modify the weeds so they only germinate but never grow into a big plan, and keep seeding with "loser weeds".

  • Heather, I love your videos and your non-pushy attitude. But as a student of botany I believe your wrong, at least towards the end. I ask everyone reading this to go buy organic fruit (any kind), plant the seeds in your back yard and watch it grow. Organic plants are EXTREMELY susceptible to pests and weeds, since they have such little defense. To think that good soil, seeds, etc is going to keep out copperhead beetles (bastards!) is crazy.

  • @C33Four You're right - growing plants to be truly healthy takes a lot of effort, skill and knowledge - just planting organic seeds won't prevent pests, and that's one of the biggest issues with industrial organic agriculture. But plants that are grown properly with true organic methods and are healthy have very strong defenses.

  • Monsonto is evil and should be charged with genocide for what they are doing to people.

  • I really hope that someday genetically modified food will completely disappear from the food market. Most people would prefer food that is not tampered with. If Monsanto changed their ways and grew organic food instead, they could actually make a lot more money since most people would definitely prefer organic food over something genetically modified... I am very sad that they use animal genes in GMO foods, I guess there's another good reason to avoid GMO's, 'cause that's messed up to me.

  • ...Plus the milk, they give the cows estrogen and so we ingest that...I grew breast when I was nine when it used to be girls didn't grow boobs till they were older like 13-14 at the least... so that shows the effects of added estrogen in the milk.

  • They kinda have to make genetically modified foods for the people that don't have a garden or know how to be a "farmer" and grow there own foods. I personally hate it though I LOVE organic foods they taste way better...and anytime I eat food from somewhere other than the organic store I get bad acne :( so that right there is proof that the foods aren't good.

  • I think the "no long term" argument isn't a good one against GM. We have a good understanding on plausibility of certain long term health issues and since we are now able to tailor our preferred genetics in food, I think it's safe to say that we know what we tampering with.

GM has great benefits. I say let the testing continue and hope that we can end up with a more sustainable and cheaper food supply

  • GMO's are bad but not just because there bad for you or there is no way to stop the spread of them or there not allowed to put gmo on any label because "people might think is bad for them" no its because its really a form of currency. Monsanto/BASF own the patents for all thos gmo's so they control the food supply and even Organic soon will be gmo as well if not already. I read there allowed to use neotame in organic feed and products because its a very small amount...

  • Monsanto is one of the most evil corporations on earth, trying to control all the food on earth.

  • Once Monsanto came out with the "terminator seed", which is a seed that dies after the first harvest, forcing the farmer to continue to buy seeds from Monsanto, we all knew that it was about money and nothing more. The spin that's put on GMO foods is that they will be able to feed the world - right, animals have fertility problems, spontaneous abortions, organ failure and other illnesses by eating GM crops. No GMO in my food!

  • Thanks for the information!

  • Thank you for explaining GMO in detail. It is always nice to know that there are others out there that have the same interest as me...health! :D Please support me by subbing my channel as well. Take care, Heather! :]

  • I am so glad you touched on this subject and you did so very gently! ;) We planted potatoes in our garden this year (organically) and did not have any problems with the potato beetle that everyone here has been complaining about. We follow the same procedures that Phil shares on organic gardening with some variances due to our location but pretty much the same. Again, love what you both are doing! Awaiting DVDs from you guys! You will be a hit!

  • From what I understand the most common GMO produce in the markets are corn, potato, squash/zuccini, papaya from Hawaii.

I would like to see a Nationwide boycott of all products manufactured by Monsanto. If people knew what Monsanto was really up to and what they have already done there would be a public outcry.

Nice Forest Pansy redbud by the way.

  • I didnt know that animal DNA is sometimes used. Thanks for this video, definitely will be looking at what I buy more closely!
