You could both be right! There are recent theories that suggest that Anglo-Saxon became the dominant culture, but ethnic Britons were not *only* pushed into Wales and Scotland. In England they adopted Anglo-Saxon culture and language and intermarried with the invaders, so "British" genes are more common in England than was once thought. google "Britons and Anglo-Saxons mixed". Seems a genuine hypothesis at least!
